The Castle Crashers are the titular main protagonists of The Same Name.
They are the King's Royal knights tasked to track the evil wizard and search for the princesses and the red energy crystal.
Background[]
Nothing is known of the characters' history, or even what they look like. However, it is clear that they are the elite forces of their King's royal guard, which is why they were (canonically) chosen to rescue his four princesses, as well as to retrieve his large crystal.
As this happens, Purple Knight is now a retired blacksmith.
Biography[]
One day, in the barracks of the palace, the four knights were partying and drinking with their many grey-armoured subordinates, when a knight was shot and killed with an arrow.
Blue Knight, Red Knight, Green Knight, and Orange Knight went out of the door to investigate, and saw an evil wizard use his magic to steal the King's crystal right before him.
As the wizard floated away, the King immediately ordered his troops to go and chase him, when they encountered several barbarians fighting the knights and civilians. After killing a few barbarians, the knights saw more, kidnapping the four princesses.
After fighting more barbarians, they killed the barbarians' boss, rescuing the red princess. However, the other three princesses were sold and taken away by hooded thieves to the woods, where the knights chased them.
Eventually, they managed to rescue the green, blue, and orange princesses, before killing the evil wizard and taking back the crystal, floating on it back to the palace to celebrate their victory.

- If more than one player rescues a princess, they must fight each other to win her affections, similar to Billy Lee and Jimmy Lee fighting for Marian Kelly in the ending of Double Dragon, which itself inspired the ending of the Armies of the Night minigame in The Warriors, where Swan and Ajax fight for Mercy.
- Beating the game with the Knights will unlock more characters.
- Beating the game with Red Knight unlocks Skeleton. Beating the game with Skeleton unlocks Bear.
- Beating the game with Blue Knight unlocks Industrialist. Beating the game with Industrialist unlocks Fencer.
