NOTE: This article regards the film version of Cat Noir. For his TV Series counterpart, see here.

Adrien Émile Gabriel Donatien Athanase Agreste, better known as Cat Noir, is one of the titular main protagonists of the 2023 superhero musical Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie. He is a distant loner who is a student at Collège Françoise Dupont. Due to the loss of his mother Emilie, he suffers from grief and has an estranged relationship with his neglectful father Gabriel.

With his magical ring, inhabited by a Kwami named Plagg, he has the power of bad luck and can transform into the superhero Cat Noir (Chat Noir in the French version). He is also the love interest of Marinette Dupain-Cheng AKA Ladybug, with the two ultimately becoming a couple by the end of the film.

He is voiced by Benjamin Bollen in the French version while Elliott Schmitt is his singing voice. In the English version, like his TV series counterpart, he is voiced by Bryce Papenbrook while Drew Ryan Scott is his singing voice. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Ryōta Ōsaka.

Appearance[]

Adrien is a bit taller than Marinette, and he has brushed-back blond hair and green eyes.

He wears a white shirt, with a collar and rolled-up sleeves above his elbow, and a black shirt underneath with five horizontal stripes around the chest which are colored, from top to bottom, yellow, olive green, bright green, dark green, and periwinkle. On the ring finger of his right hand, he wears a silver-colored ring that he uses to transform into Cat Noir. Additionally, he wears dark blue jeans and orange sneakers with white lace and a logo of a black butterfly shape in a circle on the sides.

As Cat Noir, he wears a black front zip catsuit with a golden bell on his chest. He has a long belt that hangs out like a cat's tail, gloves with claws on the fingertips, and boots. He has black cat ears and a black mask covering part of his face. His eyes, including the sclera, are green and look cat-like, and his hair is messier and untamed, covering his normal ears. His ring turns black and gains a green paw print in the circle.

Biography[]

Past[]

Adrien was born to Gabriel and Emilie Agreste and they spent a happy life together but everything changed when Emilie died. Gabriel blamed himself for this, believing that he should've died instead of her and became too helpless to face Adrien's sadness. Ever since then, Gabriel became emotionally neglectful of his son and Adrien swore that he would never get close to anybody again out of fear of losing them like his mother.

Becoming Cat Noir[]

On the the day of Emilie's birthday and the first day of school, Adrien is in the library where he first meets Marinette Dupain-Cheng and notices that she's crying (due to her being sad about being clumsy and fearing that she'll let everybody down) but she tries to deny it as as allergies to pollen much to his confusion. While reading and working, he doesn't notice Marinette starting to fall for him and she actually falls with some books and he helps her up and puts the books away before leaving. He finds her to be weird until his best friend Nino Lahiffe invites him to the fair and Adrien reluctantly accepts. After coming home, he overhears his father refusing to have dinner with him much to his sadness. In his room, Adrien is still very saddened by his mother's death. He leaves his home and goes to the closed and abandoned theatre where his mother used to perform.

After returning home, he is busy with homework till he notices something strange and notices a black cat (Plagg in his animal form) in his room before noticing the Cat Miraculous under his desk. He meets Plagg who informs him of the Miraculous and that he is the chosen wielder of the Cat Miraculous. After transforming into Cat Noir, he goes to the Notre Dame cathedral until Ladybug (Marinette) crashes into him and they are both tied upside down before falling. He treats her as a nobody and claims that he's the hero that's come to save the world. He even treats her as looking like a watermelon and decides to reduce her to a sidekick much to her annoyance. While revealing what he has, he doesn't notice Gargoyle (an Akumatized Raymond) behind until too late. He gets chased by Gargoyle before getting into a tackle ride on the Akumatized villain. Ladybug's yo-yo attaches to Gargoyle who begins to fly and crash through everything out of Notre Dame with the people of Paris seeing Ladybug and Cat Noir for the first time. Gargoyle then flies them into the river before crashing into the train station. Cat Noir tries to distract gargoyle with the "fetch" technique but it ends up with Gargoyle chasing him after the technique fails. Cat Noir gets stuck in the tracks until Ladybug saves him from an incoming train that crashes into Gargoyle which De-Akumatizes him in the process. This causes Cat Noir to fall in love with Ladybug as she helps him up the same way he did for her in the library and they both leave when the police arrive.

They both notice the Akuma butterfly leaving (after leaving Raymond) and they meet Master Fu (in disguise) who tells them to discover who they are but they bicker about each other until the old master stops them. Fu reveals to them what they stand for, that they must defeat Hawk Moth and capture the Akuma's who Akumatize anyone in supervillains and that they must work together before he disappears. Ladybug refuses to continue being a hero but Cat Noir realizes that failure is her fear but she still continues to refuse be a hero or be a sidekick to him before leaving for home. Cat Noir then becomes happy for the first time since his mother died due to Ladybug coming into his heart.

After returning home, Adrien continues to think of Ladybug but Plagg continues to annoy him with his flatulence and the way he'll wreck everything. However, Adrien continues to talk about Ladybug and what she thinks of her and asks Plagg for advice on how to get together with her and Plagg tells him that two halves are stronger together.

Defeating Akuma's and Becoming Paris' Hero[]

The next day at the fair, Adrien is with Nino asking for advice with the latter claiming to know about love but gives bad advice. They are then met by Marinette and her new best friend, Alya Césaire. Their best friends assume they like each other but Marinette and Adrien try to deny it. Alya and Nino then leave for one of the rides to let Marinette and Adrien be alone but the two try to make excuses to leave. However, when Marinette mentions the bakery that she lives in, Adrien is amazed by it and believes that her father is awesome. After Marinette drops her stuff to get macarons for him, he notices her sketching's and likes them. However, they both notice Marinette's father standing right next to them much to the girl's embarrassment. Gabriel (as Hawk Moth) calls his son to come home (also due to knowing that the fair won't be safe due to the new Akumatized villains he unleashed).

When the Magician and the Mime attack the fair and Adrien becomes Cat Noir again. When Ladybug is about to be crushed by the balloon monster, he saves her but she accepts him being around this time. They are both confronted by the two villains but stop their attacks before the villains decide to cause chaos with the coaster and the wheel. They both take care of the coaster and wheel while taking on the Magician and the Mime at the same time, but the balloon monster also makes things difficult. However, the two heroes defeat the balloon monster and the two villains while also saving the coaster and wheel with everybody on it. Hawk Moth creates a giant hologram of himself and swears to the two heroes that there will be no mercy next time. All of Paris then see the two as heroes.

The two heroes become Paris' protectors while defeating Akumatized villains and becoming famous. During all this, Adrien starts to get close to Marinette, their friends and everybody else in school.

Love Confession and Rejection[]

Months later, the two heroes are having ice cream together before they playfully fight together but after an awkward moment, Ladybug leaves for home. The next night, Cat Noir calls Ladybug to the abandoned theatre where he reveals his fears about getting close to anybody that he might lose ever since his mother died but since he met her, he's happy again. He reveals that he prepared a surprise for which is a song that they both sing together and he confesses that it was she that saved his heart and they both dance. He tries to kiss her to confess his love for her but she sadly reveals that there is somebody else (not knowing that Cat Noir is Adrien who is the somebody else) and leaves. This causes Cat Noir to feel heartbroken and Plagg reminds him about having warned him to never fall for his partner.

He returns home where Gabriel (looking all disheveled due to losing his sanity to get the Miraculouses) asks where he has been since he did not come home the other night. Adrien angrily snaps at him for never being there for him since Emilie died and that he lost his father a long time ago. At school, Adrien is approached by Marinette who confesses her love for him by inviting him to the ball and giving him a tie as a gift but he sadly uses the same words she did by revealing that there is somebody else (not knowing that Marinette is Ladybug who is the somebody else) and leaves.

Final Battle With Hawk Moth[]

When Hawk Moth Akumatizes himself and unleashes his final attack on Paris that destroys everything, Adrien is too depressed to notice the destruction and to answer Ladybug's call until Plagg finally snaps at him to stop being depressed and gets him to notice the destruction that's happening. Becoming Cat Noir again, he saves Ladybug from being getting blasted by Akuma's but they are both still emotionally hurt by each other's rejection and failing to show up. They notice Hawk Moth on top of the Eiffel Tower but Cat Noir goes to confront the villain alone. He tries to attack Hawk Moth with his Cataclysm, but Hawk Moth knocks him down, causing Cat Noir to accidentally destroy the Eiffel Tower with his power, which falls apart into the river and the debris knocks him out. Ladybug saves Cat Noir from drowning and Hawk Moth confronts them while turning the river into lava. Ladybug attempts to attack Hawk Moth, but he easily defeats her and steals the Ladybug Miraculous from her in the process. Hawk Moth proceeds to try and steal Cat Noir's Miraculous, but the hero uses Cataclysm again and slashes Hawk Moth, scarring the villain's face. This causes Hawk Moth to get enraged and use his Akuma's to slit Cat Noir's costume and mask. He is about to destroy Cat Noir with a blast but Marinette takes the hit instead to save Cat Noir. Hawk Moth lifts Cat Noir up but the hero's slit mask makes him realize that Cat Noir is his son, much to his shock and horror. He ceases the chaos and renounces the Butterfly Miraculous in the process, thus revealing himself as Gabriel much to Adrien and Marinette's shock.

Gabriel breaks down as he realizes the chaos he caused, and that he almost murdered his own son. Adrien sadly asks him why he committed all these crimes. Gabriel explains why he tried to bring Emilie back with the Miraculous but now realizes that he lost himself and that love is stronger than death. Adrien forgives his father and they both share a loving hug which also releases the Ladybug Miraculous back to Marinette, who uses her power to restore Paris back. Gabriel turns himself in and is arrested offscreen when the people of Paris are informed he was Hawk Moth, as Ladybug repairs the damage Hawk Moth did to Paris.

Getting Together With Marinette/The Christmas Gala[]

Months later, Adrien attends the ball and is outside lamenting how much he misses Ladybug and that his heart is in turmoil. However, Marinette appears and reveals that she knows that he's Cat Noir and that she's Ladybug much to his happiness and they both share a kiss.

Powers and Abilities[]

Trivia[]

    • Adrien can transform and de-transform into his Cat Noir form normally unlike his counterpart, who needs to say a transformation and de-transformation phrase to transform into his Cat Noir form. Also, despite being a teenager, he doesn't have to worry about de-transforming after using his powers.

    • He and Ladybug are treated as equals unlike their original counterparts.
    • As Cat Noir, he is arrogant like the original counterpart, however, this version is also initially mean to Ladybug unlike the original, who recognizes that they are both rookie superheroes and treats her respectfully from the beginning. He tries to provoke her when they first meet and tries to reduce her role to that of his sidekick.
    • He never calls Ladybug "My Lady" or makes cat puns as the original often does.
    • He calls out his father for his terrible behavior unlike his original counterpart.
    • When Cat Noir uses Cataclysm on his father, it only leaves a regular scar unlike his original counterpart when he used cataclysm on his father, it caused a necrotic scar that spread all over the villain's body.
      • Also, unlike the destructive dark energy in the show, the movie version of Cataclysm takes the form of lime-green crackling electricity.
    • Adrien fights his father in the final showdown and is the one to cause Hawk Moth's defeat when the villain realizes that he was fighting his son unlike his original counterpart, who doesn't fight his father and Marinette causes his defeat.
    • Adrien finds out his father is Hawk Moth unlike his original counterpart, who doesn't find out that his father was Hawk Moth/Shadow Moth/Monarch.
    • Adrien finds out that Marinette is Ladybug and gets together with her in the end unlike his original counterpart, who currently doesn't know that Marinette is Ladybug while still getting together with her.
    • Since Unification isn't featured in the film, Adrien does not become Snake Noir and Rabbit Noir. Also, he does not change his hero persona to Cat Walker since the power to change costume with the same Miraculous isn't featured either.
  • It could be possible that this Adrien isn't a Human-Sentimonster like his original counterpart, but this remains unconfirmed.
