Controversial Heroes or Exploitation Heroes are often characters whom, as the title states, are controversial whether by appearance or actions, or have appeared in movies, video games and comics books that are considered controversial past or present. They can also be heroes who have appeared in movies, video games and comic books that are often considered as cult classics like for example Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise, Nomi Malone from the controvesial 1995 film Showgirls, Peter Griffin from Family Guy. Their opposites are Exploitation Villains.

While in most cases those heroes are Anti-Heroes, it is possible for controversial heroes to qualify as Pure Good if they have no corrupting qualities, have a Moral Agency and met the requirements (i.e. Makoto Naegi).
