~ Izuku Midoriya telling All Might to stay back from his punch in order to save Bakugo from his grasp, before landing one. |
“ | Sometimes I wanna punch you in your perfect teeth...But I don't want to see you gone. | „ |
~ Tony Stark's frustration on Steve Rogers's lack of cooperation with the Sokovia Accords. |
Similar to Evil Vs. Evil, but with a hero fighting another hero, these heroes are also known as "Enemy of a Hero".
It's hard to create a story where both sides are fully sympathetic and yet in a real conflict with each other. But sometimes the authors manage to pull it off. This is not when the characters on both sides are somewhat sympathetic, merely believe in their own actions without being fully sympathetic, or are in a temporary conflict by mistake. Instead, this is when both sides are unambiguously good AND locked in a real conflict with each other.
In the lightest case scenarios, there can even be Pure Good heroes being in conflict with each other.
Notable forms of situations that led this event:
- Inspector Javert scenario: 1 of the heroes happened to be an authority figure who was chasing the hero without realizing that the hero either is Innocent as they only either witnessed/are a victim of the troubles that the real villains caused (e.g. Heinrich Lunge and Kenzo Tenma; General Rogard and the Iron Giant; Thompson and Thomson and Tintin) or someone whom attempted to redeem themselves or were already redeemed long ago, but not all people realized that he has turned to the good side. The name of the trope comes from the character Inspector Javert from the play Les Misérables.
- Opposing ideologies: The involved characters, while both being on the side of good, have opposing worldviews and come into conflict for that reason. (e.g. Iron Man and Captain America, Batman and Superman). Plenty of them are often Lawful Good/Neutral Good vs. Chaotic Good, as their views on law and order differ, clashing with each other as a result.
- Rules of War: They find themselves in opposing sides of a war and have to fight each other (e.g. Loid Forger and Franky Franklin)
- Rivalry: The involved characters have an established personal rivalry between eachother, despite both being heroes (e.g Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, Scorpion and Sub-Zero, Godzilla and Kong, Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo, Natsu Dragneel and Gray Fullbuster). In some cases, the rival might be on & off, and take the role of the villain at times, (e.g. Tom and Jerry, Deadpool and Wolverine, Mario and Wario) or have once been a villain, but now have reformed (e.g. Sonic and Shadow, Goku and Vegeta).
- Competition: The involved characters are competing against each other in a sport, game and/or tournament (e.g. Mike and Zoey, Lightning McQueen and The King).
