Jude: What do you do, Alvin? You look like a soldier but you sure don't act like one.
Alvin: Heh, you're on the right track, kid. I'm a mercenary. It's better than being a soldier. We don't have to follow orders. We set our own hours. And we help people... for a price.
~ Alvin explaining his job to Jude Mathis.

Mercenaries are heroes who work as guns-for-hire, and don't belong to any particular faction, but are still willing to do good deeds. While many do it under the hope that there's something in it for them, such as Guts, Deadpool, and The Man With No Name, there are others who merely see the profession as a means to an end.

Note: Mercenaries CANNOT be Pure Good as they are often part of anti-heroic, True Neutral, On & Off and/or Heroes by Proxy alignments that have selfish, questionable, or at least remotely villainous motivations in their goals (e.g. money and etc).

Pure Good heroes that seek their desires for justice, honor, and righteousness should go under Criminals, Military, Neutral Good, Pragmatists, Reluctant Heroes and/or Vigilantes instead of this category (e.g. Judeau, Rickert, Preston Garvey, Fox McCloud, Agent 8, Aragorn, Star-Lord T'Challa, Captain Rex, Fives, Moon Knight, Tifa Lockhart, Samurai Jack, Qui-Gon Jinn, Satele Shan, and Red Star).

However, despite the fact that mercenaries cannot be Pure Good, some can still have a sense of justice and fairness so long as their career doesn't get too much in the way of it.
