Let's do a head count here: Your brother, the demigod; a super soldier, a living legend who kind of lives up to the legend; a man with breath-taking anger management issues; a couple of master assassins, and you, big fella, you've managed to piss off every single one of them.
~ Tony Stark to Loki, laying out the odds against him.
I'LL KILL YOU!
~ Shulk to Metal Face after seeing him kill Fiora
The monster you created has returned... to kill you.
~ Kratos to Ares

Nemesis is a hero that was wronged by a villain - usually the Big Bad or the Heavy - so badly through their own actions that they were pushed beyond their sanity or near this point, making them the villain's nemesis. The hero will often act on rage to stop this villain and not just for defensive purposes.

Nemesis are also the opposite of heroic provokers, although many heroes are both. Usually, those heroes won't do favors to their provoker, and simply kill, destroy or imprison them without the slightest pity.

They are different way to declare a hero as their villain's (provoker) nemesis:

  • The provoker has severely injured, disabled or crippled the hero (though direct hits, torture or other means), or did the same (or, in the worst of case, killed) the hero's lover/loved one's, right-hand or anyone that they care about. ExampleIt, who made a nemesis out of Bill Denbrough by killing his six-years-old brother.
  • The provoker always attack or aim the hero, even if the latter is not in their way; in retaliation, the hero becomes the villain's archenemy. Example: Lex Luthor who is Superman's worst enemy. A variation of this scenario is the following in which the provoker always interfere in the hero's affairs, to the point of posing the greatest threat for the hero. Example: Dimitri Rascalov, who made a nemesis out of Niko Bellic for kidnapping Niko's cousin and burning their depot.
  • The provoker stole or destroyed any object, usually a weapon or an artefact, that was very important and belonged to the hero, or attempted several times to do so. Example: AUTO, who made a nemesis out of WALL-E for keeping for itself the plant allowing the ship to go back to Earth.
  • The provoker has imprisoned the hero or condemned the hero to exile. Examples: Colonel McCullough, who made a nemesis out of Caesar for imprisoning him and the other apes; or Scar who has condemned Simba to exile.
  • The provoker has psychologically broken down the hero, either by magic, psychological abuse, perpetual torments, or steadily made fun of the latter's failures. ExampleJoey from Oggy and the Cockroaches, who never ceases to torture Oggy.
  • The provoker has spread terrible lies against the hero, which are believed by many amongst the other characters.
  • The provoker has cursed the hero. Example: Johnny Blaze who was turned into the Ghost Rider by Mephisto.
  • In an act of pity, the hero chose to spare or even trying to redeem the villain, only to be betrayed later. Example: the Beast, who spared Gaston, only to be betrayed by the latter some moments later.
  • in Monster slayer who are hunt to monsters that are predatory and evil example:Blobs (Hopeless) who survived from. Monsters (Hopeless)
