~ Catwoman, when The Flash calls her out on her constantly changing alignment. |
Characters who sometimes act as heroes and sometimes they don't. Typically, this means that they "switch sides" (i.e. go back and forth) more than twice. These types of characters are very common in cartoons. Majority of heroes who belong to this category are anti-heroes.
Note[]
- The hero is only corrupted or redeemed if he or she stops switching sides and decides to stay evil or good in the end.
- However, if a previous On & Off villain decisively redeems themselves and decides to stay good thus reforming themselves from On & Off, they can no longer qualify as On & Off (e.g. King Dedede, Heinz Doofenshmirtz, Simon Petrikov, Shadow the Hedgehog, Grunkle Stan)
- None of these characters are Pure Good because there are no breaks in the Purely Good heroes' heroism. Furthermore, heroes who have joined or briefly joined the villains' side out of PRAGMATIC and SELF-SERVING needs but still retain their heroic way can NEVER count. Either some of them have already returned to the good side, or these types of heroes will abandon their villain facade ways once their needs and/or wants are fulfilled (e.g. Eleven, Sunset Shimmer, Buzz Lightyear (Toy Story), James P. Sullivan, Mario, Frodo Baggins, Emmet Brickowski, Lewis Robinson, Elsa, and Doctor Octopus (Raimiverse). Those should go under Type Dependent on Version, Ensemble, Dissociative, Virtually Resourceful, Alter-Egos and/or Good Vs. Good instead of this category.
- On and Off heroes can still be sympathetic if their heroic acts are admirable enough and show significant kindness, even crossing the Goodness Zone at times. (e.g. Clementine, Jesse, Duncan, and Eleanor Lamb). In some cases, the on & off nature of a certain hero is because he/she is a video game character with multiple canon choices.
- This category is only for heroes who constantly switch sides and remain inconsistent by the end of the story they are in, so do NOT add either the Fallen or Redeemed Villains categories to any page under On & Off, as those two categories are meant for characters who choose to permanently stay on the evil or good.
