Because I'm the hero Gotham needs, not the one it deserves.
~ Batman at the end of "The Dark Knight".
They left without me! They do this every year! Why?! Doesn't anyone love me?! Isn't there anyone who cares about Sid the Sloth?
~ Sid (Ice Age) abandoned by his family for the migration.

Heroes who are or were unwanted by society. They save humanity all the time but are still hated and exiled from them. Some are considered self-hating and many try to change them by force. Evil tells them to forget the humans but they still save them, no matter what. Some end up accepted in the end. Unwanted heroes can be outcasts or misunderstood people. Often these characters are cynical individuals who cling to a code of honor not because it will make a difference, but because they feel they have to. They often feel that society itself has become corrupt, but believe by clinging to a code that is shunned and hated by the people they protect, they are ensuring that goodness will never truly die.

Not to be confused with Outcast villains.
