Colleague: Why don't you let the cops handle it?

Dex: And let someone else have all the fun?

There's war in Gotham City. Perhaps where crime is concerned, there always has been. But seldom this open, this rabid. A madness seeping into every stratum of criminal society. Escalating like a plague, threating to surpass even the horror that created me.

Fortunately for me, I'm not a cop. so, I can break your face into a jigsaw puzzle if I want to...
~ Daredevil

A vigilante is a man or a woman who takes the law into their own hands (many vigilantes in fiction wear masks and capes - hence the popular title "masked avenger"), they can be similar to antiheroes and tend to work outside the law as some of their methods includes murder or violence.

Perfect examples of a Vigilante are Dex Parios from Stumptown who tries to stop and detain criminals. Some could even be Tragic much like with Batman from the DC Comics who happens to do the exact same thing but with a tragic motif with his parents and eventually for the sake of protecting those in Gotham.

Most Vigilantes could be categorized between Lawful Good and/or Lawful Neutral due to the vigilante's anti-heroic ideas (where they are on the good side but they are selfish with their motives and think more about themselves) being retaliated against the rules system and constantly taking matters into their own hands. Some vigilantes would even face other heroes or fight against Lawful Good or Lawful Evil, along with the heroic and/or villainous sides of Lawful Neutral; where they are in a more personalized systemic essential moral code.

By vigilantes' ignorance to the justice system, a vigilante could inevitably cause trouble during their actions and had a chance to made a grave mistake by end up killing a wrongfully convicted person and worse, take an innocent life as well. That is why many vigilantes cannot count for Pure Good. Due to Vigilantes taking matters into their own hands and possibly interfering with the law which makes them anti-heroic, their chances from fitting into Pure Good would be really difficult.

For villainous version of vigilantes, see this page.
