Cameron “Caz” McLeary is the main protagonist of Still Wakes the Deep. He is an electrician on the Beira D. oil rig.
He was portrayed by Alec Newman.
Biography[]
Caz is married to Suze McLeary and has two daughters with her, Cait and Maidie. Before the events of the game, he had an altercation with a man named Billy Chamberlain after he insulted Suze. After Billy was sent to the hospital, Caz was charged with assault and his friend Roy got him a job on the Beira D. oil rig in order to escape the authorities.
Still Wakes the Deep[]
In the beginning of the game, he reads a letter hand written by his wife Suze. Trots later knocks on his door to inform him about breakfast where he, after, talks to Finlay about the state the rig is in following recent budget cuts from Cadal Company. Following breakfast, he is commanded by Rennick over the loudspeakers to meet him at his office. As he heads onto deck, he puts on a red helmet and black gloves. Upon meeting him, Caz learns that he is fired from the Beira D. oil rig because of his assault charge on Billy Chamberlain. However, before he can be flown back to the mainland to face criminal charges, he is thrown overboard due to the awakening of an unknown creature beneath the oil rig that has shaken it.
Caz is eventually resuscitated by Douglas and Brodie. He enters and leaves consciousness for brief moments before waking up with a heater to warm from the North Sea's freezing waters. He exits the room and discovers Brodie in need of help to rescue Raffs from the diving bell and voluntarily accepts the task to assist, all while a strange entity slowly takes over the rig. Afterwards, he follows Douglas to the engineering section of the rig when he meets Finlay again and has to sneak past a newly infected Gibbo. Afterwards he hears Trots being infected but cannot save him in time. He then meets up with Roy and plans to get on one of the lifeboats on the rig. However, the plan is unsuccessful as the recent budget cuts have caused the lifeboat ejection system to become faulty. Afterwards, Caz meets Innes on the deck to try and reach the evacuation helicopter before Archie and Rennick take off. He is successful at reaching the lift, however, Innes is caught and killed by the infected Muir. Before Caz can flag down the helicopter, it takes off, but a struggle in the cockpit leads to the helicopter crashing back on the helipad, killing Archie and leading to an infected Rennick.
Caz is then phoned by Brodie to fix the generators, which he does with the help of Finlay whilst having to escape an infected Addair before being called again to fix the pontoons so that the rig remains stable. However, at the second leg of the rig Caz encounters a newly infected O'Connor who he has to escape to reunite with the remaining survivors. Afterwards he finally meets Brodie face to face to stop the failing stack from destroying the entire rig. There, he reunites with the infected Addair and throws the relighter, catching the infected male on fire. However, he is unable to reunite with Brody as the stack collapses, causing him to fall. After resurfacing safely, however, he is able to regroup with Finlay and Brodie who urge him to save the rig. However, Caz first needs to check on Roy, who has not had access to his insulin throughout the entire event. To do so, Caz makes his way through accommodation and escapes the infected Trots before discovering Roy's death.
After finally putting an end to Rennick and meeting with Finlay, Caz discovers that Brodie has sacrificed himself to keep the rig stable and to allow Finlay and Caz to leave. However, Finlay instead runs off with Caz's lighter he gave her at the start of the game to destroy the Beira and the horrors within it. Ultimately, she is killed by debris before being able to. She then hands Caz the lighter and tells him to destroy the rig once and for all, which kills all living and, presumably, the Shape along with it. In his last moments, Caz relives his happiest memories of Suze and the birth of his children, before reliving the morning he left for the oil rig, bidding them farewell.
Appearance[]
Caz wears a blue jumpsuit uniform with the Cadal logo on the left breast and back, no badge, black gloves, boots in a matching colour, and a beanie. He appears to have facial hair and dark brown or black hair. He wears a red helmet.
