Cecil Sudo (b. 24th Dec, 2000) is the protagonist of the anime series Wizard Barristers.
She is a 17-year-old half-Canadian wizard who lives in modern Tokyo, and works as a "wizard barrister", a type of lawyer who defends wizards (known as "wuds") over criminal offences and magic ban violations in the "magic court". She passed the bar at only 15, and became the youngest wizard barrister in history. Her reason for becoming a wizard barrister was to save her falsely convicted mother from death row.
Cecil is a prodigy wizard who can use multiple forms of magic. It is revealed in the series that she is an incarnation of a legendary wud who is born once every couple of millennia. She is aligned with the Labone, a group of wuds who are pro-human and wish to share the world with them, who have historically been at war with the Macal, a group who hate humans due to a history of anti-wud prejudice. The leader of the Macal Shimon Makusu, attempts to use Cecil to summon Lucifer (who has been living alongside Cecil as Moyo Tento) and command his powers. However upon being summoned Lucifer instead sides with Cecil due to her pure heart.
Cecil's familiar is Nanagenie, a talking frog. Nanagenie has the hots for Cecil, and is often sexually harassing her.
She is voiced by Rui Tanabe, and by Brittney Karbowski in the English dub.
Personality[]
“ | Discrimination... hatred for people who haven't done anything wrong is always bad! You... you are the reason people are so afraid of wuds in the first place...! | „ |
Cecil is a kind and passionate, if naïve, optimist. She can be reckless and doesn't think about the consequences of her actions. She doesn't mind breaking the magic ban legislation to protect herself or others, which often results in her law firm being subjected to fines (although it is sometimes mitigated thanks to article 10, "magic can be used for the greater good"). She is very empathic to others and their problems, and struggles. However she can rub people the wrong way with her optimism. Her first client, a bullied loner, initially held no trust in her as she came across as a patronising "cute teenager" who "couldn't possibly understand how [he] feels", although he later admits he should've had trust in her after she manages to prove his innocence.
She is passionate about helping wuds as a wizard barrister. However, she has a problem with defending clients guilty of heinous crimes, something that puts her at odds with others at her law firm, including her boss. She became emotional over having to mitigate the sentence of a serial killer who showed no remorse over torturing and killing his victims. She sometimes acts on her own merits for the "greater good", and puts herself at considerable risk, as was the case when she found out that he had lied about the serial killer having dissociative identity disorder.
Cecil has distain for anti-wud prejudice, but also dislikes discrimination towards anyone. She wants humans and wuds to co-exist peacefully, and considers wuds who discriminate on humans due to historical wud prejudice to be part of the problem, hence her distain for Shimon Makusu and the Macal. Cecil claims she has a "love radar" and can instantly tell when people are in love with each other.
People often comment on how physically "well-formed" Cecil is. She doesn't like being the subject of such observations and comments, however, and finds it either deeply embarrassing or irritating. She is sensitive to perversion in general and is always berating Nanagenie for sexually harassing her. She also often tells her man-obsessed co-worker, Koromo Sasori, to get her mind out of the gutter. Her clothing choices are often criticised, with her being told no one can take her seriously when dressed how she does.

Trivia[]
- Cecil was born on Christmas Eve, 2000. Combined with Lucifer's interest in her, the symbolism of her gaining angel wings in the finale battle, and the plot point regarding the "legendary wud" who is born every few thousand years, this seems to heavily imply that Cecil is supposed to be some type incarnation of Jesus Christ. At the very least, this appears to be intentional symbolism to paint Cecil as a messiah of the wuds.
