Centaurs are legendary beings described as half-man and half-horse, although in modern times many depictions of Centaurs are romantic and even heroic, the traditional tales of the Centaurs held them to be a brutal and wild race prone to drunkness, looting, and defilement.

History[]

Centaurs often drank and fought amongst themselves as well as against various humans, often due to their piratical raiding of towns and their habit of kidnapping man and women.

Although often dangerous even in the days of ancient Greece there were examples of honorable Centaurs who aided humans rather than attacked them but they were considered the exception rather than the norm.

The wise and gentle Chiron the Centaur, is perhaps the most famous of all Centaurs who was a well respected trainer of heroes and a great healer.

Mythology[]

According to Greek folklore, the Centaurs were created as a result of a series of events involving Ixion, a king of Thessaly. Ixion, in an act of defiance and disrespect towards the gods, attempted to seduce Hera, the wife of Zeus. This act infuriated Zeus, who decided to punish Ixion in a unique way. Zeus created a cloud in the guise of Hera and placed it next to Ixion. From this unusual union between Ixion and the cloud, the Centaurs were born. The result of this peculiar union was the creation of beings with the upper part, including head and torso, of a human, attached to the lower part of a horse. This combination of human and equine characteristics defined the nature of the Centaurs.

The Chronicles of Narnia[]

Oreius was a brave and noble Centaur who lived during and after the Long Winter, and was the General of Aslan's Army against the evil White Witch during the Winter Revolution. He was a fierce warrior and a loyal follower of Aslan.

Oreius was among the most loyal followers of Aslan, going to his side even before the promised human monarchs arrived. He was most likely one of the Narnians who recruited his countrymen for service in Aslan's army. He, Aslan and the rest of the Narnians gathered together at Aslan's Camp in 1000 NY, by the Stone Table, where he was made Aslan's general. He was present at the arrival of the Beavers, Prince Peter and Princesses Susan and Lucy.

Popular Culture[]

There are a great many heroic male and female Centaurs of various species and tribes that appear in the Netflix animated series Centaurworld that the main protagonist Horse encounters and befriends, including Wammawink, and the other Herd members.

There's also Centorea Shianus from "Monster Musume: Everyday Life With Monster Girls", the three Centauress Knights Tisalia Scythia; Lorna Arte; and Kay Arte from "Monster Girl Doctor", and even Himeno Kimihara; the main protagonist from "A Centaur's Life" who are among some of the more well known, famous, and extremely popular heroic examples of Centaurs in anime.

Centaur Guard[]

Citizen centaurs generally work as labourers, artisans or scribes. Some settlements' governments allow the ordinary centaur to run for higher-up positions, such as magistrates and mayors. Occupations are often passed down through generations of family, and therefore it is not uncommon for one to find an entire lineage dedicated to their family's chosen profession.
