Chang Lee is the main tritagonist of the Doctor Who TV Movie.
He was portrayed by Yee Jee Tso.
Biography[]
Chang Lee was a gang member in 1999 San Francisco. During an ambush by a rival gang, two of his friends were killed, with Chang Lee himself only surviving because the Seventh Doctor interrupted the altercation and was accidentally shot. Chang Lee accompanied him to hospital, referring to him as "John Smith", and was told by Doctor Grace Holloway that he had died in theatre. Chang Lee fled the hospital after stealing the Doctor's belongings.
Chang Lee headed back to the TARDIS where he encountered the Master, who told him the Doctor would have regenerated. The Master convinced Chang Lee that the Doctor had stolen the TARDIS from him and also stolen his body which he intended to get back. He offered Chang Lee a bag of gold dust in return for his help. As a human, Chang Lee had an affinity with the Eye of Harmony, which allowed them to both see the Doctor's new body and that he was with Grace.
Chang Lee assisted the Master in an attempt to abduct the Doctor and Grace in an ambulance and in trying to stop them getting a berrilium chip. Both attempts failed, but by now Grace had fallen under the Master's influence and helped them to capture the Doctor and string him up in the TARDIS. However, the Master's inability to resist ranting about how he had wasted all his lives thanks to the Doctor led Chang Lee to realise he had been lied to and refuse to help anymore. The Master promptly snapped his neck.
After the Master's defeat, Chang Lee, like Grace, was resurrected by energy from the Eye of Harmony. The Doctor returned both of them to San Francisco in the early hours of New Year's Day 2000. Chang Lee returned the Doctor's things but the Doctor let him keep the gold dust. He also warned Chang Lee not to be in San Francisco at the following New Year.
Trivia[]
- While Chang Lee cannot be revisited in spin-off media due to rights issues, Yee Jee Tso has played several characters for Big Finish's Doctor Who audio dramas, most notably UNIT officer Charlie Sato.
