It's the only way, Tien. Don't worry. I'm not afraid. And if I can save you, then it's worth dying for.
~ Chaozu in "The Power of Nappa"

Chaozu (Chiaotzu in the Funmation dub) is a recurring character in Dragon Ball franchise. He serves as a supporting antagonist in a Tien Shinhan Saga and an ally in both King Piccolo Saga and Piccolo Jr. Saga of the original manga and 1986 anime. He is also a supporting character in Vegeta Saga of the Dragon Ball Z before becoming a minor character for the remainder of the franchise.

A small, mime-like Earthling, Chaozu is a martial artist who was trained at the Crane School by Tsurusen'in and Tao Pai Pai, where he met his best friend and partner Tenshinhan. He was initially shown to be stoic and sadistic, only smiling when he was about to severely burn his opponents with Dodon Wave, his masters' signature attack. However, after being defeated by Krillin in 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, Chaozu befriends Goku and becomes an ally that would help him with villains such as King Piccolo, however after his numerous deaths, Chaozu has largely stayed away from fighting due to falling behind his allies.

In Japanese, Chaozu is voiced by Hiroko Emori, a voice actress of Marian Kelly in Japanese dub of Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Tyris Flare in a Golden Axe: Beast Rider and Sophia Tutu in The Raccoons. In English, he is voiced by Cathy Weseluck, Rebecca Forstadt, Monika Antonelli, Brina Palencia, late Jodi Forrest, Ed Marcus, Sean Broadhurst, Michelle Elizabeth Frankenberger Pellicer, and also Ethel Lizano.

Appearance[]

Chaozu is depicted as an extremely short human with average physique and smooth solid-white skin, with unnerving face consisting of two unblinking googly eyes, red cheeks that appear to be birthmarks, no nose, round protruding ears, wide mouth, and a single long strand of black hair on top of his head. No matter the outfit, he will always wear black or dark-grey Guapi mao with red tip.

In Dragon Ball and early episodes of Dragon Ball Z, Chaozu is dressed in a changpao with dark-green and dark-yellow color scheme with some red outlines and Crane School symbol. He also has black baggy pants with dark-yellow socks and black boots.

From Vegeta Saga to Cell Saga, Chaozu wears a pale-blue sleeveless tank top, dark-green wristbands outlined with red and wide red waistband, while the design of his pants and boots did not change.

In Majin Buu Saga and Dragon Ball GT, Chaozu is dressed in a navy-blue robe with a pale-pink cape with yellow-white sleeves.

In Dragon Ball Super, Chaozu adopts an entirely new attire consisting of pale-blue jumpsuit with white sleeves, black shirt on top outlined with red, taller black boots and more detailed guapi mao.

Personality[]

Chaozu is largely shown to be emotionless, save for his undying devotion to Tenshinhan, obeying almost his every command without a question. Upon his debut, he was extremely sadistic and evil, being completely casual about brutally scarring one of his opponents and joyfully bombarding the arena with Dodon Waves while trying to do the same to Krillin. His expression stayed blank and so did his body language, making his intentions very difficult to read, only changing when he was attacking or being attacked. He also executed orders from Tsurusen'in about slowly killing other contestants easily, although he would set the bar on not hurting Tienshinhan. While knowledgeable in combat, Chaozu was generally clueless in anything else, as he was not taught how to count, panicking upon being asked.

After his initial defeat, Chaozu becomes more childish and emotional, enjoying spending time with Tien. During Cell Saga, he would cook meals at Kame House, as he was too weak to be on the battlefield with others.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Martial Arts Mastery: Chaozu is a proficient master of martial arts, being able to hold his own against Krillin in a fist fight during Tien Shinhan Saga. During the Saiyan Saga, Kami notes that all the Z Fighters have surpassed him by the end of their training, which would include Chaozu.
  • Dodon Wave: A high-powered energy beam fired from index finger, capable of grievously burning opponents and starting small explosions. Unlike Kamehameha, its standard variant does not require any charge beforehand and can be fired in short bursts. In Dragon Ball Super, Chaozu was even able to split his Dodon Wave into several different directions.
  • Telekinesis: Chaozu can move and lift objects without physically interacting with them, which also includes living beings. Using this technique, he could immobilize both Krillin and later Kid Goku dead in their tracks, which they were unable to break out until he let them go. While he could not affect Nappa with his powers during Saiyan Saga, Chaozu would later improve enough to briefly immobilize Base Form Goku during Copy-Vegeta Saga, after the latter had trained in one hundred times Earth's gravity. His telekinesis is also precise to the point where Chaozu could completely stop all the bullets fired by dozens of pirates from machine guns. In the video games, Chaozu often telekinetically chucks boulders at his opponents.
  • Flight: Chaozu is capable of flying or levitating through the air for unlimited periods of time. He can perfectly control his direction of movement, as he could turn it on a second before falling out of the ring and accelerate to dodge blows from Krillin without moving his feet.
  • Superhuman Strength: Chaozu is strong enough to kick Krillin to the wall and is implied to be comparable to Son Goku during Tien Shinhan Saga, who could lift and throw cars over his head before his training, and later climb large mountains while carrying oversized boulders. Combining his flight with his superhuman attributes, Chaozu can perform a spinning drill attack by launching himself at his opponents' torsos head-first while spinning, dealing significant damage to their internal organs.
  • Superhuman Durability: Chaozu can withstand punches strong enough to smash through brick walls and survive point-blank Kamehameha, albeit heavily trashed. Given that he is able to fight the likes of Krillin and Goku after Red Ribbon Army Saga, he is likely durable enough to tank missiles and high-caliber sniper rounds on his soft tissues like cheeks. While he was killed by a single blast from King Piccolo, Kami would state during Saiyan Saga that the Z Fighters have surpassed him, and he was vastly stronger than his evil half. Also during a Saiyan Saga, Nappa attempts to throw Chaozu off himself by smashing into numerous mountain formations at gigantic speeds, yet this did little to nothing to him.
  • Superhuman Speed: Chaozu is fast enough to keep up with Krillin during Tien Shinhan Saga, blocking and dodging his punches, as well as surprising him with his speed. Technically speaking, he surpasses Red Ribbon Army Saga Goku, who could blitz soldiers before they could pull triggers, dodge exploding missiles and surpass Ninja Murasaki, who could move faster than human eye can see. This is further supported by the fact that Chaozu could create afterimages in both original anime and several video games.
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Chaozu can react to attacks much faster than a human being, as he once stopped his fall a second before landing, preventing him from falling off the ring.
  • Superhuman Flexibility: Chaozu is flexible enough to twist his neck 360 degrees with no ill effects.
  • Telepathy: Chaozu can read minds and communicate with others without words, as he once spoke to Tenshinhan during the tournament.
  • Self-Detonation: As a last resort technique, Chaozu is capable of latching onto his opponent and over-charging his own body with Ki, creating a concentrated large explosion that leaves nothing of him behind. However, since Nappa sensed him before he could activate this technique, a Saiyan was able to survive by forming a Ki Barrier around himself. It also possible that being smashed into several mountain formations also weakened Chaozu enough for Nappa to live.
  • Ki Barriers: Chaozu can copy certain techniques from his opponents after seeing them once, being able to copy Broly's Powered Shell to protect himself via energy barriers, which he uses in Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle.
