Charles Darwin is the tritagonist of the The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!

Modeled and named after the scientist of the same name, he is a brilliant scientist who serves as a minor secondary antagonist turned supporting tritagonist.

He was voiced by David Tennant who also voiced Scrooge McDuck in the 2017 DuckTales reboot series and portrayed the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who.

Personality[]

Charles is is quite timid and cowardly, but when he's met with an opportunity to get what he wants, he will jump at the chance and display a surprising level of malice and cunning, even showing a slightly abusive side when he chastises Mr Bobo for failing in kidnapping Polly. Though being a very intelligent scientist who was made several great discoveries in the past, he still feels empty over his lack of a female companion, and this drives his motivations. He eventually grows a friendship with the pirates and decides to help them when he is betrayed by the queen. The end of the film indicates that he'll go on to become more confident and charismatic.

Biography[]

Charles is sailing the seven seas on his ship, the H.M.S Beagle, to find a new discovery for the upcoming scientist of the Year competition in England, however, his ship is raided by the pirates, led by The Pirate Captain, and he notices that their pet "parrot" Polly is actually the last living dodo bird. Charles convinces the pirate captain to come to England with him and enter Polly in the scientist of the Year competition, promising Fame and riches. Charles reluctantly let's the pirate crew stay in his large house, and he introduces them to his chimpanzee Butler Mr Bobo, Charles secretly plans to steal Polly at night and enter her in the competition himself. He has Mr Bobo kidnap her in a disguise, but the pirates give Chase and take Polly back, leading to the house being destroyed.

The next day, Charles takes the pirates to the scientist of the year competition, with the pirates disguising themselves as scientists to get in. Polly wins the competition, and Charles reveals to The Pirate Captain that the true prize isn't money, but rather meeting Queen Victoria. Victoria tells Charles to bring her Polly by any means necessary, which he obliges. And later that night, he and Mr Bobo take the pirate Captain to a bar and get him intoxicated to steal Polly, but the pirate captain tracks them down, and Charles admits to the captain that he has a crush on Queen victoria, and he wanted to steal Polly so she could like him. At that moment, Victoria emerges and disposes of Charles and Mr Bobo via a trapdoor which leads to a dumpster. In the dumpster, Charles finds a brochure for an annual feast where all the world leaders, including victoria, go on a large ship and eat rare animals for dinner. Feeling remorseful for lying to him, he later relays this information to The Captain, who sold Polly to Victoria after he fell in the dumpster, and the two work together to steal an airship and make it to the ship to save Polly, While Mr Bobo stays behind and steals a small boat.

After successfully sneaking on the ship, Queen Victoria finds them and a fight ensues, leading to Charles getting tarred and feathered. But the pirate captain's crew and Mr Bobo come to the rescue and defeat Victoria. Afterwards, Charles departs to an island to discover more exotic creatures, and he bids farewell to the pirate crew, along with Mr Bobo, who has decided to stay with the pirates. On the island, Charles discovers a group of native women, whom he converses with.
