“ | Oh, I cursed and said "DAMN" in 1958 when I saw your grandfather being shot in the head by that ROTTEN burglar. | „ |
~ Charlie's grandma on why she was sent to Hell. |
Charlie's Grandma is a minor character in the Smiling Friends episode "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back." She is the deceased grandmother of Charlie Dompler.
She is voiced by series' co-creator Zach Hadel, who also voices Charlie, Glep, Century Egg, Gwimbly, Plilford, and the Homunculus in the same show.
Appearance[]
She has elongated, sinewy arms and bony fingers with yellow fingernails. Her nose is a a long, bulbous protrusion that arcs over her face, and she has bulging, baby blue eyes. Sparse, wiry hairs sprout from her head. Her body is pale, and has numerous wrinkles and bruises. She sits in a wooden rocking chair, clad in a loose-fitting pink and white nightgown.
Personality[]
She appears to be a sweet old grandmother who loves her grandson and is willing to help him out on his quest and offer him candy. Despite this, she appears to suffer from some mental issues, as indicated by her randomly screaming certain words of her sentences and erratically sucking on her hair-ridden lollipop. She exhibits other odd behaviors, such as simply exclaiming "damn" after witnessing her husband being shot in the head.
Biography[]
Charlie's grandma is initially referenced in "Shrimp's Odyssey," where Charlie informs Pim that she died after eating a peanut.
She makes her only physical appearance in "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back." In this episode, she explains to Charlie that she resides in Hell for eternity because she uttered 'damn' in 1958 upon witnessing her husband's murder by a burglar, a punishment Charlie considers disproportionate to her actual sin. She offers Charlie a piece of hard candy, which he refuses, and she then hastily sucks on it herself.
Trivia[]
- In an interview with the podcast The Create Unknown, Zach Hadel made a connection between Charlie's grandma's death and Mr. Peanut. This implied that she was a victim in the canonical Toxic Peanut Scandal, where Mr. Peanut had laced his peanut products with toxic pesticides.
