~ Charlie Brown's catchphrase. |
Charlie Brown is the main protagonist of the Peanuts comic strip and The Peanuts Movie. Notable exclusions are the film Snoopy Come Home (1972), It's a Mystery, Charlie Brown (1974), Snoopy! The Musical (1975), What a Nightmare, Charlie Brown! (1978), and Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown (2011), all where he's the deuteragonist, and It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966), where he and Snoopy are the tritagonists. His many struggles are based off the childhood of his creator Charles Monroe Schulz. He attempts to do what is right for others, though sometimes it dissatisfies them. He has a dog named Snoopy and a little sister named Sally.
He has a crush on the seldom-seen, seldom-named Little Red-Haired Girl. Despite encountering bullies, like Lucy Van Pelt, or those that are minor adversaries, his greatest adversary is himself. He always gets abused by his friends, especially Lucy, who calls him a "blockhead". To always have a boy's voice, he is almost always voiced by different boys. In the miniseries This is America, Charlie Brown, he is voiced by Erin Chase.
In the 2015 film The Peanuts Movie, he was voiced by Noah Schnapp, who later played Will Byers from Stranger Things.
In the cartoon, he was voiced by the late Peter Robbins (1963-1969), Gary Burghoff (1967 of musical Broadway-off), Chris Inglis (1971). Chad Webber (1972-1973), Todd Barbee (1973-1974), Duncan Watson (1975-1977), Dylan Beach (1976), Arrin Skelley (1977-1980), Liam Martin (1978), Michael Mandy (1980-1982), Grant Wehr (1981), Brad Kesten (1983-1985), Michael Catalano (1983), Brett Johnson (1984-1986), Chad Allen (1986), Sean Colling (1988), Jason Riffle (1988), Kaleb Henley (1990), Phillip Shafran (1991), Justin Shenkarow (1992), Jamie E. Smith (1992), Jimmy Guardino (1993), Steven Hartman (1995-1997), Quinn Beswick (2000), Wesley Singerman (2002-2003), Adam Taylor Gordon (2003), Spencer Robert Scott (2006), Alex Ferris (2008-2010), Trenton Rogers (2011), Aiden Lewandowski (2016), Gaston Scardovi-Mounier (2018-2019), Ethan Pugiotto (2019-2020), Tyler James Nathan (2021), and Etienne Kellici (current).
Biography
Charlie Brown the kid who never has things go his way, partly because he's just unlucky and partly because one of his defining qualities is that he's "wishy-washy", and therefore often fails to go after what he really wants. Running Gags with him include trying to kick the football but having it pulled away, being the dedicated manager of a terrible baseball team (or, depending on the writer, being the terrible manager of a potentially good baseball team), and generally being the strip's scapegoat.
Appearance
Charlie Brown is drawn with only a small curl of hair at the front of his head, and a little in the back. Charlie Brown almost always wears black shorts and a polo shirt with a black zig-zag stripe around the middle. In the animated TV specials, his shirt is colored yellow. In the past, his shirt was colored red in the Sunday comic strips and blue in Peanuts merchandise but it now usually appears as yellow in all media.
Trivia
- Charlie Brown is based on Charles Schulz himself. His father is also a barber too.
