Look, Pim, I know it's our job to help this guy and everything, but I think this guy is a lost cause. He's obviously made up his mind. Why don't we just cut our losses and get out of here?
~ Charlie's most iconic quote.

Charlie Dompler is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Pim Pimling) of the adult animated comedy series Smiling Friends. He is an employee at Smiling Friends Inc., whose job is to make clients smile and make their days better.

He is Pim's best friend, coworker, and pessimistic counterpart. Despite that, Charlie is a well-meaning character who ultimately tries to do his job, even if he doesn't always believe in the process.

He is voiced by series co-creator Zach Hadel, who also voices Glep, Gwimbly, Plilford, the Bug of Knowledge, and Squim in the same show.

Appearance[]

He is a large yellow humanoid with a wide, protruding nose and prominent lips. His eyes are small, black, and beady (though they reveal a white sclerae when he is shocked), and he has six wispy hairs on the back of his neck. He has a fairly chubby build and light body hair on his chest and belly.

He usually wears an orange hoodie with a striped grey shirt underneath, grey pants, a brown cap, and white shoes.

Personality[]

Since Charlie is an employee of Smiling Friends Inc., like Pim, he has experience talking to people and is willing to help those in need. However, while Pim is very energetic and optimistic, Charlie prefers to play the straight man and be more realistic in situations, often being more socially aware than Pim in many scenarios. Charlie's advice tends to make more sense over the long run for his clients, but it can just as easily go hand in hand with his sloth and laziness. In general, Charlie has a nonchalant, laid-back, easygoing personality, but can be somewhat pessimistic or irritable at times. Charlie also tends to speak in a nasal monotone and rarely raises his voice.

There are times when Charlie is very passionate about helping clients, but this mostly comes from personal interest or self-benefit, such as solving the murder of Simon S. Salty due to nostalgia for his food, helping Mr. Frog get his show back because he enjoys it, or making Satan smile in order to leave Hell. That said, while he may not be as invested as Pim, he does seem to enjoy making people happy, as he was insistent on having a drink at the bar with Shrimp to make him feel better. Moreover, he's open to overcoming his flaws; this is most prominent in "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back," where he's put face-to-face with a devilish depiction of his faults in the form of Satan himself. God believes Charlie's passed his test after calling out Satan's vices, resulting in Charlie making up with Pim after being sent back to Earth.

Charlie is rather portly (as noted by himself, claiming he needs to lose weight "fuckin' immediately" when confronted with a damning picture of himself) and is shown to be an eating enthusiast more than once. Mr. Boss even refers to him once as "the fat one." He is a great lover of the quick-grub chain Salty's because of their burgers and century eggs; just the mere thought of Salty's food causes him to smack his lips together. He's also a regular at "The Flying Meepling." In "Squim Returns," Charlie lies to Mr. Boss that he's too sick for work so that he can play a new video game that came out, but also to eat some "parasite kebabs," which he claims hit the spot.

Charlie has moments of mild egotism and seems to be image-conscious. Such is the case in "Pim and Charlie Save Mother Nature," where he states he would be an "elite super spy" if not for his present job, and in spite of being "so good at it," he keeps it under wraps to not freak anyone out. Meanwhile, Charlie's stepping on the animal poop on the trail that Pim was able to spot and navigate around. He sometimes makes poor excuses for his shortcomings in an effort to save face; in "Pim Finally Turns Green," he insists he only doesn't "lay out" the Yeti that had barged into their break room because his arm was supposedly gym-sore "or whatever." He also states that he doesn't dress up for Halloween in case his costume turns offensive in ten years' time, disliking cancel culture. This may also fit his staunch politics, as Charlie is depicted as a rabid fan of the controversial Mr. Frog, supporting him in his presidential campaign and using a photo of a failed assassination attempt of him as his phone lock screen (which is a direct parody of the same happening to Donald Trump in real life).

At odds with his rather sinful habits, Charlie is a devout Catholic. He wears a crucifix and prays to God in times of stress, and attempts to exorcise Glep with a cross necklace in "Curse Of The Green Halloween Witch." He states in "Who Violently Murdered Simon S. Salty?" that he'd never break the 6th commandment. Charlie's faith may have been strengthened after he met and was saved by God himself.
