Until one day his old friend Alan sees him on a scooter in the streets, whom he thinks he recognizes as his former college friend Charlie Fineman. He knows from him that his wife, his three daughters and his dog were killed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. However, it will take some time before Alan can establish contact with Charlie. First, however, he still has to deal with the intrusive patient Donna Remar. Johnson has also felt constrained in his marriage for some time. He often takes the chance to intercept the young psychiatrist Angela Oakhurst, who is practicing in the same building, in front of the door to talk to her about the marital problems of "a friend".
After Johnson rejected clear offers from the patient Remar, he is sued by the same woman for alleged sexual harassment. The partners in the joint practice are not happy about this and call on Johnson to settle this matter.
At the same time, Alan Johnson also finds access to Charlie Fineman. At first, he seems reluctant to reminisce about their time as a student together. Johnson, however, endures Charlie's little quirks with the patience of an angel. Be it that he often walks around with headphones on his ears or sometimes has loud failures when something doesn't suit him. Nevertheless, the two are getting closer and closer. Johnson's wife, on the other hand, is increasingly suspicious of her husband's behavior. More and more often, Alan doesn't come home at night and prefers to spend it with Charlie playing the video game Shadow of the Colossus or in a punk rock bar. Charlie also meets the patient Remar one day and seems to be completely fascinated by her. Johnson has another conversation with her and she withdraws her lawsuit afterwards.
Gradually, Charlie gives Alan insights into his life. Alan decides he wants to help him. Then, unexpectedly, there is a stroke of fate for Johnson. He learns after a Mel Brooks night with Charlie at the cinema that his father has died and his wife has been trying to reach him for hours. Charlie Fineman doesn't seem to be bothered by this news, he just asks Alan if they want to have breakfast somewhere. Alan refuses.
A few days later, Charlie Fineman's accountant bursts into the funeral service because he wants to rebuke Johnson. He explains to him that he is not willing to watch anyone take advantage of Charlie's situation to get his money. He tells him that Charlie wants to bequeath him a million dollars. Johnson rejects the offer.
After a failed attempt to match Charlie with a psychologist close to him, Alan turns to Angela Oakhurst. Together they try to break open the tank around Charlie Fineman. At first, however, without any significant success, because Charlie thinks that Angela is much too young to understand anything. In Angela's practice, Charlie occasionally meets Donna Remar, who is also being treated by Angela. After several short sessions, Angela tells Charlie that he just needs to talk to someone, and that it doesn't necessarily have to be her.
Alan Johnson is waiting in her anteroom. Charlie begins to tell him about his family, which Alan never knew personally. Angela can also follow this conversation. In the evening in his apartment, Charlie rummages through old cardboard boxes. There he also finds a gun. He threatens a taxi driver with this unloaded weapon, hoping that police officers sitting in a café will shoot him. But he is disarmed and beaten. However, the judicial authorities do not want to indict the widower, as it would give them a bad image to treat someone who lost his family on September 11 in this way. However, he is placed under a three-day psychiatric observation.
Doctors come to the conclusion that further treatment in a closed ward would be necessary for another year. Both Johnson and Angela Oakhurst cannot follow this line of reasoning. There will be a court hearing, where a decision will be made on the admission. Charlie's parents-in-law are also in favor of this admission, on the grounds that Charlie does not seem to be touched at all by the death of his family. In the court hearing, the lawyer of the parents-in-law tries to make it clear with pictures of the deceased family that Charlie does not show any emotions. Charlie becomes increasingly insecure and receives several warnings from the judge. But Charlie's mother-in-law and her lawyer also get a warning. The judge adjourns the hearing and asks the lawyers and the in-laws to talk. He makes it very clear to them that he intends to regard this matter more as a family quarrel. He does not accept contradictions from the lawyer of the parents-in-law and he certainly forbids him to speak. He asks the parents-in-law to think carefully about what their daughter would have wanted until the next appointment. Would she have had her husband admitted to a clinic?
Charlie Fineman leaves his previous apartment and moves into a new one. His parents-in-law refrain from admitting him to a clinic. In Charlie's new apartment, he gets a visit from Alan, Donna and Angela. Angela stops by just a moment. While Charlie is playing a video game with Alan, he flirts with Donna. Later, Alan leaves the apartment. The doorman carries Charlie's gasoline-powered scooter after him. Alan calls his wife and tells her that he loves her. Then he rides the scooter into the night.
