~ The Puppet to William Afton in Ultimate Custom Night. |
“ | My daughter, if you can hear me, I knew you would return as well. It's in your nature to protect the innocent. I'm sorry that on that day, the day you were shut out and left to die, no one was there to lift you up into their arms the way you lifted others into yours. And then, what became of you. I should have known you wouldn't be content to disappear, not my daughter. I couldn't save you then, so let me save you now. It's time to rest. For you, and for those you have carried in your arms. | „ |
~ Henry Emily to his daughter Charlotte as the two burn to death. |
Charlotte "Charlie" Emily, later known as The Puppet, and Lefty, is the deuteragonist of the ScottGames era of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise.
She is the undead daughter of Henry Emily who, after her death at the hands of William Afton, possessed a puppet animatronic kept in Freddy's Fazbear's Pizza. She would grant the spirits of Afton's victims new life in the form of possessing the pizzeria's animatronics and would also try to help them kill the night guards working at the pizzeria.
Following the closure of the pizzeria, she would give her fellow victims their "Happiest Day" and help them ascend to the afterlife. She herself would ultimately move on after being burned to death by her father alongside Afton, his son, his daughter, and his creations, before the Puppet's mask was absorbed into the Tangle years later.
In Ultimate Custom Night, she is voiced by Reagan Rundus as the Puppet and by Lena Gwendolyn Hill as Lefty.
Appearance[]
Charlotte was a little girl with dark hair tied in a ponytail. Her sprite from the Security Puppet minigame depicts her with grey skin, a grey jumper, and dark pants, and she wears a green wristband.
As the Puppet, she is a lanky marionette animatronic with strings attached to her. She wears a pale white mask with an open grin, eyeholes, and red blush marks and lips. Her slim black body has three buttons on its torso and stripes around its limbs (five on the arms, nine on the legs). She has purple tear marks on her mask (representing Charlotte's ghost possessing the animatronic) and her eyeholes often glow white, having previously glowed green in the past.
As Lefty, she is contained in a black and grey Rockstar Freddy-esque animatronic created by her father with a single yellow eye, red eyelids, kneecaps, and blush marks, and a yellow star on its torso. It also wears a red hat and bow tie and carries a microphone that also serves as a taser that can electrocute its targets into submission.
Biography[]
Charlotte Emily was born to her father, Henry, presumably a few years before he and William Afton established Fredbear's Family Diner, the precursor to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza and its numerous successors. Henry built the Puppet animatronic to protect children at the pizzerias, specifically Charlotte, from any harm. Charlotte wore a green wristband when visiting the pizzerias, which allowed the Puppet to detect her and defend her from any dangers.
Around 1983, at an unspecified Fazbear location (implied to be either Fredbear's Family Diner or the original Freddy Fazbear's Pizza), three kids locked Charlotte outside in an alleyway and abandoned her. She cried to be let in to the Puppet, who was trapped in its box station due to gift boxes holding its lid shut. At that moment, William Afton drove into the alleyway and, for unknown reasons, murdered her, leaving her corpse lying in the alley. The Puppet managed to escape at this point, but was unable to save Charlotte and cradled her corpse as the rain short-circuited the animatronic, allowing for Charlotte's ghost to possess it.
While its status following Charlotte's death is unknown (other than the fact that it resurrected Afton's later victims, the Missing Children, as the Classic Animatronics), the Puppet was later reused in 1987 for the Prize Corner of the newly opened successor to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, where it continued its directive of both protecting children and gifting them presents. At night, under Charlotte's influence, it would guide the possessed Freddy Fazbear animatronic to the corpses of Afton's other victims in the pizzeria.
When Jeremy Fitzgerald and later Fritz Smith took up the job of the pizzeria's night guard, the Puppet and her fellow animatronics, mistaking him for Afton, attempted to kill them, with her attacking whenever her music box was left quiet. After the pizzeria's closure, the Puppet would be moved to the original Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, where she hid away and presumably manipulated the animatronics within it. She apparently escaped the pizzeria before its closure and later Afton's destruction of the animatronics and subsequent death at their hands.
Years later in 2023, the Puppet went to Fazbear's Fright, a horror attraction where both the remains of the animatronics and an undead Afton (now named Springtrap) were kept, where she organized the "Happiest Day", a paranormal birthday party-esque event within an arcade cabinet in the location. Assembling the Missing Children's spirits with the help of the attraction's nightguard, the ghostly Shadow Bonnie, and four digital versions of past Fazbear animatronics, she then gifted Cassidy, one of the Missing Children, a birthday cake, allowing all five spirits to ascend to the afterlife.
The Puppet and Springtrap escaped Fazbear's Fright as it was burned down, presumably by faulty wiring. However, she would soon be captured and trapped in the "Lure Encapsulate Fuse Transport and Extract" (L.E.F.T.E., nicknamed Lefty) animatronic, which was created by Henry. He had created a faux pizzeria to lure in Springtrap and his creations and destroy them, and the Puppet came to the pizzeria inside Lefty, along with Springtrap, his daughter Elizabeth AKA Scrap Baby, and an amalgamation of his animatronic creations named Molten Freddy. Inside the pizzeria, she lurked through its vents and hunted for its night guard, Michael Afton, Springtrap's older son, but to no avail.
Eventually, by the end of the pizzeria's operation week, Henry set it alight, thus burning himself, Michael,William, Elizabeth, and Charlotte. As she died, Charlotte was told by her father that he was sorry that no one could save her as she was killed by Afton all those years ago and promised that he would save her now. Her spirit moved on from the animatronic and to the afterlife as it was incinerated.
Personality[]
Charlotte Emily is a kind and, despite her age, motherly figure as the Puppet, granting the victims of her killer new life and stating to him that they are under her protection. According to her father, she had these protective traits even before her death and resurrection. Her instincts even drive her to try and murder William to avenge his victims, although this'll often cloud her judgement as she mistakes people like Jeremy Fitzgerald, Fritz Smith, and Michael Afton for him and attempt to kill them, even if to no avail.
When active in the pizzerias, the Puppet is kind to children, protecting them from harm and gifting them presents. She also enjoys listening to the music box attached to her station, although she'll become hostile when it's not winded and will resume her murderous attempts.
According to Ultimate Custom Night, despite her benevolence, Charlotte also shows malicious traits like receiving sadistic pleasure from William's suffering and arrogantly proclaiming the other animatronics as "animals" compared to her. She also apparently "doesn't hate" William for killing her, although she states that he needs to stay out her way, and seems to have feared him in the past. However, considering that UCN is William's nightmare created by one of his victims, it's unknown how real most of these claims are. Although it likely is considering that characters like Bonnie feel remorse for killing Afton so Puppet likely does mean this.

Trivia[]
- While Charlotte, the spirit possessing is indeed female, Ultimate Custom Night claims that both Puppet and Lefty animatronic themself were males.
- These is common occurrence in the Five Nights At Freddy franchise, because Golden Freddy being male is also possessed by two souls in the FNAF Survival Logbook.
- Security Puppet is heavily implied to be the original form of the Puppet.
- Evidence supports these in the Security Puppet minigames, revealing the tragic incident that happened to Charlotte Emily presumably at some point in the past.
- It's still speculated among fans if it was Afton or the Puppet who stuffed the Missing Children into the animatronics.
- It's heavily implied that Nightmarionne is Charlie's agony counterpart, taking physical form.
- It's possible the reason why the Puppet is more aware than the others is due to having more Remnant, though this wasn't confirmed.
- While Charlotte's soul already put to rest by her father during FFPS's true ending, it is theorised that she still has a supernatural influence lingering in Freddy Fazbear's Mega PizzaPlex in Security Breach.
