Biography[]
When Charlotte was a young girl, her father always ensured she had the finest clothes, purchasing them from Eudora, the best seamstress in New Orleans and Tiana's mother. Despite their different backgrounds, Charlotte and Tiana grew to be very close friends.
As a supportive friend, Charlotte is always trying to help Tiana while also feeling excited about meeting Prince Naveen. She pays Tiana a substantial amount in advance to cater her costume ball, enabling Tiana to finally afford her long-desired restaurant. At the La Bouff's masquerade party, Charlotte is anxious because Prince Naveen hasn't appeared yet. When he eventually arrives and dances with her, it's actually his valet, Lawrence, who is disguised with a voodoo talisman from Dr. Facilier. The real Naveen has been transformed into a frog by Facilier and encounters Tiana. Mistaking her for a real princess because of her outfit, he asks her to kiss him to break the spell. Though initially repulsed by the idea, Tiana realizes this might be her only chance to secure her restaurant, so she kisses Naveen. However, the spell misfires and turns Tiana into a frog as well. Tiana panics and angrily confronts Naveen, leading to an incident where both tumble into the party and into a drummer’s set, unintentionally invigorating the event. They end up in Charlotte’s dress. She, unaware that the frogs are her friend and the prince she hopes to marry, tries to swat them away, screaming in horror. Big Daddy instructs Stella, Charlotte's dog, to catch the fleeing frogs.
The next morning, Charlotte meets with Lawrence, apologizing for the chaos involving Tiana and Naveen the previous night. As the talisman’s power fades, Lawrence begins reverting to his true form but manages to prevent Charlotte from uncovering the deception. He proposes to her, and she eagerly accepts, planning their wedding for the Mardi Gras Parade. Meanwhile, at Mama Odie's, Tiana and the real Naveen learn that only a princess's kiss can reverse their transformation. Since Eli La Bouff is king of Mardi Gras, his daughter Charlotte is considered a princess but only until midnight, when Mardi Gras ends.
After Lawrence is exposed and imprisoned, Naveen finds Charlotte and shares his tale. She agreeably offers to kiss him and promises that once married, she’ll help Tiana buy her restaurant. As Tiana overhears this exchange, she tells Naveen her dream is incomplete without him. Moved by their love, Charlotte decides to kiss Naveen so they can reunite as humans without requiring marriage. Before they act, the clock strikes midnight, nullifying her princess status. Regretful about not being able to help break the curse, she apologizes. Later, Charlotte attends Tiana and Naveen's second wedding and catches the bouquet, suggesting her own future wedding might not be far off.
She is last seen at the grand opening of Tiana’s restaurant "Tiana's Palace," joyfully dancing with Naveen's younger brother.
Other Media[]
Charlotte also makes an appearance in the short film, Once Upon a Studio. In the final group photo, you can spot her admiringly standing close to Gaston from Beauty and the Beast.
Personality[]
Ever since early childhood, Charlotte has gotten everything she wanted, and thus gained a very spoiled personality from it, but even though she can be self-centered, the lovely debutante is generous and is by no means selfish.
She has always dreamed of marrying a prince and living a storybook life, mainly because Charlotte would wear beautiful princess dresses, made for her by Eudora, the finest seamstress in New Orleans, who also happens to be the mother of her best friend, Tiana.
She's a ditzy, impulsive diva filled with spunk and flare. When she finds out that Tiana and Naveen are in love, Charlotte is happy for her best friend and kisses a frog for her even though she won't get to marry Naveen, thinking she is the princess who must kiss the frog to break the spell. It doesn't work anyway, but they didn't know that at the time.
Trivia[]
Originally, Charlotte was supposed to be an antagonist of the film as in the original script, Tiana would have been a maid working for her and she would’ve been a spoiled brat to her. This was later scrapped, likely due to it seeming racist.
Her casual appearance resembles a "Flapper", a group of women who dressed slightly more free-willed during the Roarin' 20's, when the film takes place.
Charlotte affectionately calls Tiana "Tia" while Tiana calls her "Lottie".
She is based on that of pop icon Marilyn Monroe.
Charlotte is unique to her role in the movie as she is between two archetypes. Despite being both extremely wealthy and spoiled, she is not a villain in the movie. She is very kind and generous, and is Tiana's best friend throughout the movie, as well as being very supportive, such as leaving "Naveen" at the ball to take care of Tiana, whose dress was ruined. She also accepted the fact that Tiana and Naveen are in love, and let them live happily ever after, despite Charlotte’s lifelong dream of wanting to marry a prince.
Her mother is not shown or mentioned in the movie. It is possible that she passed away.
She and Tiana both slapped Naveen with a book when he introduced himself as a frog.
As a kid, Charlotte owned a pet white kitten named Marcel, but as a teenager, she owned a Basset hound named Stella. It's never explained what happened to the white kitten.
In some initial concept arts, Charlotte was overweight.
Strangely, Charlotte does not turn into a frog when she kisses Naveen. Though it’s possible that because of Dr. Facilier’s death, that part of the curse was no longer working.
