Chayton Black is a major character in the Age of Empire III era. Last known member of the Black lineage, Chayton seems to be a conflicted figure among the might of war, torn between the idea of making fortune or doing things right by protecting the innocent.

He is the two main protagonists of Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs, specifically Act II: Shadow.

History

War between the Lakota and United States

Chayton Black begins his journey expanding the Falcon Company westward along the Bozeman Trail, but soon finds himself caught in Red Cloud’s War alongside Fort Laramie quartermaster Billy Holme.

A decade later, Chayton reunites with Holme—now a sheriff—who lures him back west with tales of gold in the Black Hills. After fending off Lakota attacks on mining camps, Chayton attempts to broker peace with Crazy Horse, only for Holme and a group of miners to destroy the Lakota village, sabotaging the effort.

Alliance to Lakota

Though Chayton initially supports Holme, he refuses the order to destroy another village. Turning against his old friend, he allies with the Lakota and helps destroy the fort.

Chayton convinces General Custer to give him one day to find Holme. Donning Lakota clothing and war paint, he gains their trust and tracks Holme to a hidden mine. There, Holme tries to kill Chayton, but is shot and falls into the mine, dying in an explosion.

Chayton fully joins the Lakota cause and fights alongside Crazy Horse and other chiefs at the Battle of Little Bighorn, killing Custer and forcing a U.S. retreat.

Fate of Black

In the ending, Amelia Black says she never saw Chayton again, but hears two stories about her son: he died heroically at Wounded Knee, or he settled in the Black Hills with a family. He is last seen riding with Crazy Horse, walking away from the path of war.

Trivia

• The story of Shadow depicts Amelia Black still alive at the time, where she briefly spoke to her son. While she is unclear of her son's fate, is it likely that just like Morgan, she has drunk the fountain water to stay alive that long as she would be 100 years old by the events of the expansion.
