Chen Xiang ( Chinese simplified: 沉香 chén xiāng ) ( Japanese: ジンコウ jinkō ) is the deutergonist of the chinese donghua film “New Gods: Yang Jian”. He is Yang Jian’s long-lost nephew, driven to steal the magical Lotus Lantern to free her mother from the Mount Hua. He is voiced by Li Lanling in the Chinese dub, Luke Naphat Sath in the English dub and Toshiki Masuda in the Japanese dub.
As the nephew of the god Erlang Shen Yang Jian, his mission to split the mountain and rescue his mother serves as the key plot device driving the narrative forward. The film subverts traditional mythology of “The Lotus Latern”by interweaving the mother-rescuing journeys of him and his uncle Yang Jian across two generations, depicting their emotional evolution from misunderstanding to joining forces against the schemes of Master Yuding. With a resilient and rebellious personality, Chen Xiang develops a solitary and wary nature due to being raised away from his family since childhood. Personality[]
Chen Xiang showing his personality through his facial expression
Chen Xiang is a resilience and rebelliousness teen, qualities shaped by his upbringing in a hostile environment from a young age. This fostered tendencies toward solitude, vigilance, and deep-seated wariness. His behavior often reflects this isolation and defiance—for instance, he bears the weight of a life taken when fleeing his sect and employs ruthless, even brutal methods toward anyone he encounters, friend or foe, in his quest for the Lotus Lantern, underscoring his "ruthless" side. Yet, Chen Xiang is also clever and resourceful. As a teenage character, he possesses a mysterious supernatural abilities and remarkable intelligence, driving the plot forward.
On an emotional level, Chen Xiang’s actions are deeply motivated by a longing for maternal love, which creates contradictions in his character: on one hand, he shows a fierce protective instinct toward those close to him, such as Xiao Yu; on the other, when he perceives betrayal or marginalization, he may resort to authoritarian measures, as seen in his harsh treatment of Liu Yanzhang. This reflects his paranoid and immature tendencies. Compared to his uncle Yang Jian, Chen Xiang appears more extreme in his sense of loyalty and temperament, lacking Yang Jian’s tolerance and openness. However, this very trait highlights his struggle and growth as a "modern male character" in taking control of his own destiny.

History[]
Chen Xiang is the son of Yang Chan the sister of Yang Jian. He was sent to study under Master Yuding at an early age and had to put up with a hostile environment within the sect. Chen Xiang was raised without love and under continual oppression as a result of Yuding’s willful denial of martial training and the abuse he endured at the hands of his second senior brother. He became vicious cunning and emotionally torn as a result he frequently turned to murder while cherishing loyalty particularly to Wan Luo whom he completely trusts and obeys. Chenxiang is determined to find the Lotus Lantern because he wants to save his mother. In the process he works with Shen Gong Bao to break out of the sect and learns how to manifest his Yuan Shen under tricks.
With Yang Jians support he leads the expedition to split the mountain and save his mother eventually clearing Lotus Peak. But in reality Yang Chan his mother has become one with the Mystical Bird and his action releases the bird causing a devastating upheaval. Yang Jian who was first employed to apprehend Chenxiang subsequently learns who his nephew is. Their relationship progresses from miscommunication and disagreement to final reconciliation. Through this journey Yang Jian changes from a desperate bounty hunter to a mentor who helps Chen Xiang in his quest creating a two-sided mirror dynamic in which Yang Jian represents the difficult decisions made by a vested interest sacrificing for justice while Chen Xiang represents a desperate all-or-nothing battle with nothing to lose. The dark truth behind the fairy tale is revealed by Chen Xiang’s experiences. His brutality is a result of sect abuse which challenges the conventional narratives stereotypical depiction of mothers. At the same time Yang Jian’s patricide (betraying his sect) and Chen Xiang’s patricide (rebelling against his master) explore themes of redemption sacrifice and defiance against authority.
