Private Chernov (Russian: Чернов) is a featured character in the 2008 video game Call of Duty: World at War, appearing as a supporting character in the Soviet campaign.

He was a Red Army soldier during the Second World War, being assigned to the 3rd Shock Army during the Soviet's push to the Nazis' capital, Berlin. Unlike his comrades, Chernov was a pacifist who was dismayed by the brutality of the Soviets against the Geramans, and was known for writing in a diary. Despite this, he remains loyal to his country to defeat the Nazis, and depending on the player's actions, will either view the playable character, Dimitri Petrenko, as a true hero or a brutal soldier.

He was voiced by Craig Houston.

Background[]

Not much is known about Chernov's past, but he was born in Russia presumably during the 1900s to unnamed parents, and later joined the Red Army during the height of World War II. Though Chernov was dedicated to wanting to defeat the Nazi Party, Chernov became dismayed by his comrades violence against the Germans. By 1942, he started to write in a journal to express his thoughts about the war and the Soviets brutality.

World at War[]

During the Soviets push to Berlin in 1945, Chernov was assigned to a unit under the command of Viktor Reznov, and the team managed to rescue Reznov's friend Dimitri Petrenko. While battling against the Nazis, Chernov refused to mercilessly murder the Germans that were begging, and Reznov scolded him to be more about Dimitri. The unit would go to defeat the Nazis at the countryside and destroying German tanks hidden in a barn, and the unit would continue their push to Berlin. Entering the empty streets of Berlin, Chernov would continue to witness the brutality of his comrades, but remained loyal to the Red Army in fighting against the Germans. Going to the streets, Chernov either saw Dimitri murder the surviving German troops on Reznov's orders, or spare them and allow the other Soviets to kill them.

Entering the metro station, Chernov and the Red Army continued their fight against the Germans, and barely managed to escape when the metro was flooded by the Nazis. Afterward, Chernov tried to dry off his diary before being reprimended by Reznov, who told him that no one would read his diary. The private then obtained the Red Army flag and participated in helping his allies in destroying the Nazis infantry to enter the Reichstag. When Chernov marched to the entrace, he was burned to near death by a German wielding a flamethrower, but the soldier was killed. Reznov and Dimtri checked on their comrade, and Reznov took sympathy on the private by collecting his diary and stating that "someone should read this". Chernov was left at the stairway as Reznov and the unit captured the Reichstag, and he presumably died from his injuries.

Depending on the player's actions, Chernov's last entry will speak of Dimitri in different views, seeing him as not a hero for his brutality or being one if he showed mercy. If the player showed both brutality and mercy, Chernov will guess that a hero doesn't need their actions questioned.
