Chief Nacho is one of the tritagonists of the 1972 Western movie, The Wrath of God. He is the leader of the Aymara Indian tribe including Chela residing in an Aymara village in the Wind River Country near Mojada.

He was portrayed by the late Enrique Lucero.

Personality[]

Chief Nacho is a kind, caring, gentle, loyal, selfless, and generous man with a heart of steel. As leader of his people, he is very protective of Chela and her new love interest, Emmet Keogh.

Biography[]

Having been made aware of one of his people, Chela's safe return to their village near Mojada, Chief Nacho and Chela return and pass by to give thanks to the one man who rescued the latter from an attempted rape by soldiers in the first, an Irish political assassin named Emmet Keogh kept inside a military place along with two other men: an American Catholic priest, Father Oliver Van Horne they befriended on the way and Emmet's former British partner, Jennings.

At night, as Emmet is taking a walk, Nacho takes him by surprise and silences him before the latter finds himself reunited with Chela. After Nacho thanks Emmet for saving Chela, he helps Chela put on her amulet around Emmet's neck symbolizing their love and marriage. Then, Nacho tells Emmet to come with them, but Emmet regrettably refuses since he has been forced by Colonel Francisco Santilla to go with Father Van Horne and Jennings to Mojada tomorrow on an important mission: kill a man named Don Tomás de la Plata residing in the town of Mojada in exchange for their freedom and an equal share of Father Van Horne's $53,000 despite the former's death warning.

On their way to Mojada, Nacho, Chela, and other Aymaras are greeted by Emmet driving with Father Van Horne and Jennings in the latter's car. A few days later, having missed Emmet, Chela decides to pay Emmet a visit at his hotel room where she and Nacho witness him bathing; much to Emmet's shock and surprise. Then, Nacho leaves Chela and Emmet alone, thus, allowing them to eventually make love before Emmet leaves to join up with his friends at the church where they intend to kill de la Plata and his men just in time.

After a failed attempt due to de la Plata's mother, Señora de la Plata's presence in the church, Nacho stays by Emmet's hotel room door, thus, implying that Chela is waiting for him inside. After having made love again, Nacho and Chela are personally invited by Emmet for drinks to celebrate despite Aymara Indians not being allowed in a canteen. However, when Emmet begins to order drinks for him and his friends, Nacho is angry to learn that de la Plata's second-in-command, Jurado is present when he hears the latter deliberately insulting Chela due to the canteen rules despite drunkenly suggesting taking her out and possibly raping her as well. When Emmet defiantly talks back to Jurado about his cowardice earlier in the day, Nacho warns Jurado with his rifle even after the latter nearly threatens to shoot Emmet. Then, Nacho and Chela are forced to stay back and watch Emmet and Jurado fight. Even though Jurado cheats during the fight, Emmet wins the fight by knocking him out even after Chela finally speaks out for the first time to warn him about the latter's final attempt with his dagger and both Father Van Horne and Jennings come in to stop another one of de la Plata's men from finishing him off. While Father Van Horne and Jennings return to have another drink, Nacho and Chela take Emmet back to their village in order to recover from all the bruises and beatings received during the fight.

However, Nacho and his people have left Emmet tied up and restrained for his own safety, but against his own free will; much to his own anger. At first, Nacho refuses, but then complies when Chela asks him to release Emmet in order to rejoin his friends at the church just in time for the upcoming battle against de la Plata and his men out of fear of Emmet threatening to leave Chela should she betray him.

Later, after having undergone some serious heavy beatings by de la Plata and his men, a wounded Nacho is sent back to town on horseback to deliver de la Plata's message to Father Van Horne, stating that unless he shows up at the latter's hacienda alone and unarmed, he will proceed to kill all the men, women, and children he has taken hostage including Chela as well before passing out temporarily; given the number of casualties both Father Van Horne and his friends had cost de la Plata during the battle earlier.

After mourning for the death of one of the hostages and Father Van Horne's newly adopted son, Pablito having been murdered in cold blood by Jurado earlier in order to prove his master's point and coerce Father Van Horne into coming to him, Nacho and his people come along with Emmet, Jennings, and all the other villagers to storm the hacienda while Father Van Horne rides out to the hacienda armed with nothing more than just a Bible and a crucifix out of vengeance. Later, when Emmet can't Chela anywhere amongst the freed hostages, Nacho, his people, and Emmet decide to sneak into the hacienda and rescue Chela; unaware that de la Plata plans to keep and use her as bait in order to lure both him and Jennings as well.

Having snuck into the stables, Nacho, Emmet, and his people kill and take a few of de la Plata's men prisoners (some of which tried to bring Chela over to tempt Jennings and the others) and rescue Chela before he and Emmet proceed with their objective, leaving Chela under her people's protection and care until it is over. In the ensuing battle, Nacho and Emmet manage to blow up the gates with grenades, thus, allowing Jennings to drive the car through them. After most of de la Plata's men are killed by Emmet and Jennings, Nacho manages to fatally shoot Jurado after both he and his master have fatally shot Jennings, leading to the latter's ultimate sacrifice in the end. Then, after Emmet has been thankfully saved when de la Plata suddenly gets shot twice by his own reluctant mother before the latter could deliver the final shot, Nacho reunites with Emmet and Señora de la Plata in the hacienda's chapel.

After de la Plata stumbles out and collapses near the stone cross Father Van Horne has been tied to, Nacho comes out of the chapel with Emmet and Señora de la Plata before Emmet and Chela are happily reunited. After Father Van Horne manages to kill de la Plata by toppling the cross onto him when trying to shoot someone in a final attempt, thus, putting an end to his tyranny once and for all, Nacho and everyone else generously tend to Emmet and a now-free Father Van Horne's wounds as church bells are being sounded across the countryside.

Trivia[]

  • Nacho's name is actually the name of a Tex-Mex dish consisting of tortilla chips or totopos covered with cheese or chile con queso, as well as a variety of other toppings and garnishes, often including meats (such as ground beef or grilled chicken), vegetables (such as chili peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, and olives), and condiments such as salsa, guacamole, or sour cream.
