Chiyo Mihama, also known by her shorthand name Chiyo-chan (Ms. Chiyo), is the main protagonist of the manga/anime series Azumanga Daioh. She is one of the smartest characters in the franchise.
She is voiced by Tomoko Kaneda and Chiyo Mihama in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Jessica Boone in the English version of the anime.
Biography[]
The youngest and cutest of the girls, Chiyo is a child prodigy whose intelligence allowed her to transfer into high school at ten years old. While she excels in her studies and consistently scores high grades, she fares poorly at sports, and a lot of teenage issues fly right over her head. To her friends' amazement, she comes from a wealthy family, yet isn't spoiled because of it. Her classmates think she turned out to be a perfect child due to her kindness and maturity for her age, but she's insecure about being coddled because of it.
Personality[]
Chiyo was initially described as pretty much perfect: she's adorably precocious, Yomi explicitly notes she's "good at everything", and she comes from a wealthy family to boot. As time goes on, it becomes clear that she has her own insecurities, like how her young age and short height make few people take her seriously despite all her talents. The anime in particular elaborates on this; one Chiyo-centric episode has her linger on a conversation with her grade school friends, implying that she longs for a "normal" childhood. However, Chiyo is cordial and very helpful in class, such as tutoring classmates who need it, and organizing events for their school's annual Culture Fest. Chiyo even invites her friends to her family's summer home twice, during summer break.
Trivia[]
- She shares a traits with Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls franchise.
