~ Choi Woo-seok's motivation to help Seong Gi-hun stop the Squid Game. |
Choi Woo-seok is a supporting character in Season 2 of Netflix's K-drama Squid Game. He is a loan shark and the second-in-command of Hwang Jun-ho's team. Seong Gi-hun hires him to find the Recruiter. He later joins the mission to avenge Kim Jeong-rae's death and end the Squid Games once and for all.
He is portrayed by Jeon Seok-ho.
Personality[]
Choi is presented as happy-go-lucky individual. Whilst he is a loan shark, he ends up fighting for the greater cause alongside his boss, Kim Jeong-rae. The death of his boss makes him more determined to help Seong Gi-hun in order to help end the Squid Games.
He's shown to be very eager to find the best possible solution to a problem. He explains how he was scammed in the past and beat up the scammer in retaliation before being arrested, which is why he initially doesn't trust Hwang Jun-ho, a former cop. However, he makes sure to take charge when needed on the mission alongside Jun-ho, even going as far as to direct and lead experienced mercenaries.
While not much is known about his past, he later explains how he shares a strong bond with Kim Jeong-rae. He witnesses his boss' death and breaks down before becoming a great force in Gi-hun's team.
Biography[]
After a meeting with Seong Gi-hun, Kim Jeong-rae meets with some of his employees, including Choi Woo-seok. Kim ordered Woo-seok to gather all the men and prepare for their annual search for the Recruiter. Woo-seok was doubtful of the credibility of Gi-hun's story, but Mr. Kim reminded him that Gi-hun was paying them a lot of money for their search. Come next morning, Woo-seok gives a presentation about the Recruiter's description and Mr. Kim details their search route. Woo-seok is paired with Mr. Kim as they search for the recruiter. Months pass and the men have no luck in locating the Recruiter. At Jonggak station, Woo-seok voices his annoyance at their lack of progress and doubts Gi-hun's credibility. Kim believed Gi-hun's story since no reasonable person would waste so much money to find someone who didn't exist. Woo-seok then joked about enlisting in the games himself but he was interrupted by the sound of something slamming. They spotted the Recruiter across the train tracks playing ddakji with Lee Myung-gi. They call Gi-hun to notify him and follow the Recruiter while they wait for Gi-hun to catch up.
They chase the Recruiter as he prepares to conduct a social experiment by buying 100 bread rolls and 100 lottery tickets. The two witness the Recruiter offering several vagrants in Tapgol Park the choice between a loaf of bread or a lottery ticket. Once finished, the two are shocked to see The Recruiter stomp the remaining bread rolls. They continue following The Recruiter until Mr. Kim suggests they attack him before he has a chance to slip away. Woo-seok is hesitant but joins Kim in the attack, however The Recruiter easily overpowers them knocks them both unconscious.
The two awaken to see themselves bound and gagged in front of each other. The Recruiter forces them to play a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, minus one and Russian Roulette. The Recruiter loads a bullet in the cylinder and states he will shoot at the loser of each round. As the game begins, Woo-seok hesitates to take his turn and accidently plays nothing. The Recruiter disqualifies him and shoots an empty at him. With their situation clear, Woo-seok participates in the next round. The Recruiter grows bored with game and decides to reverse the odds by loading 5 bullets into the gun and hastening the game. The two tie for a few rounds until Woo-seok accidently plays two rocks to Kim's paper and scissors. Woo-seok closes his eyes in anticipation but Kim refuses to remove one of his hands, leading the Recruiter to disqualify him. Woo-seok watches in horror as the Recruiter kill Mr. Kim before turning his attention towards him. Woo-seok is interrogated by The Recruiter and reveals the location of Gi-hun's hotel. The Recruiter bounds Woo-seok in one of the rooms while he goes to confront Gi-hun. Woo-seok is found by Hwang Jun-ho and gives him Gi-hun's room number. As Jun-ho arrests Gi-hun under suspicion of killing the Recruiter, Woo-seok knocks out Jun-ho with a fire extinguisher. Gi-hun aims the gun at Woo-seok and Woo-seok identifies himself before noticing The Recruiter's body. Woo-seok has an emotional breakdown while Gi-hun analyzes The Recruiter's business card. Woo-seok cleans up the mess from the Recruiter's death while Gi-hun interrogates Jun-ho. Woo-seok was distrustful of Jun-ho due to his police background, but Jun-ho successfully convinces them they're on the same side. The three agree to team-up and arm themselves in preparation for meeting the Front Man on Halloween.
