Chōkai (鳥海?) was a Takao-class heavy cruiser, armed with ten 20 cm (8 in) guns, four 12 cm (5 in) guns, eight tubes for the Type 93 torpedo, and assorted anti-aircraft guns. Chōkai was designed with the Imperial Japanese Navy strategy of the great "Decisive Battle" in mind, and built in 1932 by Mitsubishi's shipyard in Nagasaki. She was sunk in the Battle off Samar in October 1944. Chōkai was named for Mount Chōkai.
Appearance[]
In Kantai Collection, she has red eyes and wears rimless glasses, she has long brown hair and masts on her head. Her attire is very similar to her sister ship Maya's, she wears a sailor dress consisting of a blue sleeveless shirt with an exposed midriff, a white pleated skirt, black gloves and a loose belt around her waist.
For her second remodel, she gains a new uniform and rigging which is a mirror image of Maya's own (the hat and rigging are to her right instead of Maya's left). Instead of being optimized for Anti-Air, she is built for night battles with spotlights on her "masts". This remodel is speculative, never having been remodeled historically as she was used extensively during the war, never having the chance to be remodeled. Thus, the remodel needs a blueprint.
Trivia[]
- Scuttled by Fujinami after gunfire/bomb damage in Battle off Samar, October 25, 1944
- Interestingly, she was majorly damaged by the shell of the escort carrier USS White Plains (CVE-66), which detonated her torpedoes in their tubes.
- She is one of the largest vessels to be sunk with all hands aboard during World War II.
- Probably the deepest-known wreck, due to the fact she was sunk directly above the Philippine Trench, and probably lies in about 26,600 feet (8107m in metric units) of water, well beyond the reach of manned submersibles.
- Named after Mt. Choukai in Tōhoku region.
- She appeared in the first Kancolle Drama CD, also dubbed One Nao show, along with other characters in a mini skit.
