Claire Kagenou (クレア・カゲノー, Kurea Kagenō?) is a supporting character from The Eminence in Shadow of a anime, manga, light novel, and web novel. She is the older sister of Cid Kagenou and heiress to the Kagenou Family. After the "Red Moon Incident" she became the vessel of the Diablos.
She is voiced by Rina Hidaka in Japanese and Luci Christian in English.
Biography[]
Claire is the first born daughter of the Kagenou Baron family, she always wanted to have a little brother. At the age of 2 she got what she wished when Cid was born, and she was very excited to see her brother. At the age of 3, she would get into her fair share of troubles, as she once knocked over a pot of boiling water but was pulled out of the way by a 1-year-old Cid before she was harmed. She would be saved and protected by Cid when a stray dog was about to bite her, or when she was about to fall out of a window, or when she got lost in a fortress and was about to cry, however no one believed her, and her memories of those times when she was young had faded over time.
She wanted to let everyone know how amazing Cid was but due to Cid's average skills, no one believed her and she would hated it when people called her and Cid a miss-match pair of siblings. At the age of 8, Claire began her training as a Dark Knight, learning swordsmanship and magic in order to continue the Kagenou family name, she had surpassed her brother Cid in performance and academics (unbeknownst to her that he's pretending to be weak). She at some point had won in a youth tournament. At some point, she took a 6-year-old Cid into a forest as special training to battle the Scarface gang to toughen him up. But since Cid didn't want to anger their mother, she concluded special training, but they ran into the Scarface gang. Claire tried to fight the Scarface gang, but was nearly knocked unconscious and begged Cid to run away however Cid tried to protect her and she watches as the Scarface gang knocked Cid unconscious and though she had seen Cid standing up before she lost consciousness. Cid would wake her up and she would hug her brother relieved to see her brother was alright and finds the members of the Scarface Gang gone, she was told by Cid that bounty hunters had driven the Scarface Gang away, however unbeknownst to it was Cid who had killed all the members of the Scarface Gang.
At the age of 12, Claire had often trained with Cid outside of their house. Unfortunately, she was disappointed in his below-average performance and would berate him for it before choosing to punish him. Despite that she still sought to practice with him whenever she could as she would refine her skills better with anyone else. And would learn from their practices together. At some point in time Claire was taught by Cid that it didn't matter on much magical energy you have but how you use it.
At some point around the age of 14, Claire learned that she had contracted a curse called Demon Possession. Fearful that she might not live long, she'd dedicated her time with Cid to prepare him for the future. Unbeknownst to her, she was cured of her curse by Cid and she continued to watch out for him.
At age of 15, Claire was ready to leave to the capital of the Midgar Kingdom to attend the Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy. However the night before her departure, she was kidnapped by the Order of Diablos who had infiltrated their home for the purpose of using her for their experiment. Claire discovered that Viscount Grease was her kidnapper as she was being held captive in a dungeon. After making some derogatory remarks about him, Grease enquired as to whether she had ever been possessed by demons. She only hazarded a confirmation and accidently brought up Cid in their talk, which led Viscount Grease to decide to bring him in for questioning as well. After hearing this, Claire became furious and broke out of her chains to try to attack the Viscount, but he managed to knock her out cold. She had no idea that Cid and Shadow Garden had saved her, she returned home safely by using her own power. She would spend the night recovering, during her recovery, she would be pestering Cid, and the next day after that she had departed to the capital to attend the Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy.
Appearance[]
Claire is a beautiful young woman with a tall, slender build, with fair skin, and a voluptuous figure. She has long silken black hair that reaches her knees, and red eyes in her brother's depiction, "stunning" a word that individuals use to describe Claire's appearance. Her hair bears some similarities to her brother, with her right-side bang are longer than her left-side bangs. She is dressed in She wears the Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy uniform consisting of a gold-detailed blazer jacket with white cuffs on the sleeves with gold detailing, a white dress shirt, a navy blue tie, a plaid pattern on the skirt, a sash navy blue with gold details, she wears black tights and knee-high heeled boots with crosscutting laces.
After becoming the host to Aurora, Claire's eyes turn violet whenever the ancient mage asserts control of her body with her right hand having a ancient magical circles on the back of her hand. She would start to conceal the seal on her hand with a white bandag wrapping around her arm. After having the right arm of Diablos forceably merged into her body, the magic circle on her hand took on another magic circle.
Claire used to have long hair that hung down below her shoulders, but it eventually reached her waist and then continued to grow past it.
Personality[]
As the heiress to the Kagenou family, Claire must maintain an air of formality and stoicism to preserve her family's reputation. Her sharp tongue and willingness to criticize, even her father whom she affectionately calls 'Baldy,' are emblematic of her personality. Claire is also hostile to people who have captures or threaten her.
Yet, her recklessness often lands her in trouble, especially when it concerns her younger brother, Cid Kagenou. Claire has shown to hold a deep brother complex, as she fierce protectiveness over him, constanly worries about him, leading her to confront any threat to his safety, regardless of the consequences. Coming from her intesne need to protect and care for Cid above all else, even at the expense of her own well-being. Also has also shown to bear some similar traites in stark contrast to Cid. Despite her deep love for Cid, she occasionally finds herself frustrated by his aloofness or disobedience, and bereaking promises to her like returning home with her for the holidays, which results in her punishing and throttling him but she later forgives him. Claire also makes every effort to find most, if not all, opportunities to spend time with him. And if he avoids her, Claire will do whatever she can to find him even ask for his whereabouts. When Claire had symptoms of the possessed, she wanted Cid to become more severe and harsher since she thought she wouldn't have much time left. Claire also does everything she can for him. After he was enrolled in the Academy, Claire intended to place him in a position that would allow him to have a successful career once he graduates.
After the Red Moon Incident and receiving a mark from Aurora, Claire begins to believe in her latent powers. She had came to the belief that she is the "Chosen One". who will work through out the shadows while knowing the truth.
Powers and Abilities[]
Claire has been stated to be naturally talented by everyone within the Kagenou Estates. Having been trained since childhood, Claire possesses abilities far surpassing those of an average Dark Knight. After Rose Oriana was expelled and Iris Midgar graduated, Claire is regarded as the current strongest student in the Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy. The Knight Order is highly interested in recruiting her, and even Iris personally wants her to join the Crimson Order after she graduates.
Abilities[]
Claire is a prodigy. By the age of 6, she excelled in both academic studies and combat training. At 8, she won a youth tournament and was briefly able to hold her own against dangerous criminals in the Scarface Gang. And at the age of 14, Claire was also able to win a tournament dispite dealing with Demon Possession at the time. At age 15, Claire has been shown despite being shackled to a wall, having her limbs restrained by Magic Sealing Chains, she can withstand a punch to the jaw from Grease despite being knocked back against a wall while still having her glare on him remain unchanged, Claire can also dodge the next punch. She was strong enough to easily break the chains that bound her, unleashing the full extent of her phsyical strength despite breaking her bones and tearing her skin and dislocated her finger in the process. Her high pain tolerance was evident as she barely reacted to the pain due to her intense rage towards Viscount Grease for threatening her brother's life. At age 17, she was capable to knock out a few students of the academy who were trying to stop her from saving her brother and dislocated Rose's shoulder, however she was subdued by a group of students and Rose in the end. Claire is capable of fightning against members of the Knight Order from Zenon's faction, who held a grudge against her brother (Game Only). She can jump high enough into the air and smash through a glass window without injuring herself (Manga Only). She decapitated a Ghoul with a single kick, showcasing her great strength. Claire also withstood a punch to the face from Juggernaut, even when it came from floor level (Anime Only), and managed to give him a small cut on his face despite being knocked back. Claire's body is nearly strong enough to replicate her brother's "I Am the All-Range Atomic" variant of his "I Am Atomic" technique, but she is unable to execute it due to the inability to endure the magical pressure while being possessed by Aurora (Anime Only). Later, as she learned to control her newfound powers, she grew strong enough to fight on par with members of the Cult of Diablos."
- Swordsmanship: The future of her house is said to be Claire, a prodigy in both magic and the use of swords. Born into a family with a lengthy history of Dark Knight training. being familiar with the Bushin Style. She started dueling with her brother Cid on a regular basis when she was eight years old. Claire has been training since she was a little girl, therefore her skills are better than those of other Dark Knights. Claire was taught effective mana management techniques by Cid, which helped her defeat opponents with greater mana reserves. She has superior swordsmanship to guardian or royal knights, although she is still not on Princess Rose or Iris' level.
Although the competition's favorites (Rose Oriana, Iris Midgar, Beatrix, and "Mundane Mann") withdrew before confronting her, she was strong enough to win the God of War Tournament.
- Intelligence: She had been learning from Cid prior to enrolling in Midgar Academy for Dark Knights, even though she had defeated him in their training part. After enrolling in Midgar Academy for Dark Knights, Claire maintained high grades and aptitude, earning her status as an honor student. She became one of the top students at the academy, surpassing even members of the Knight Order.
- Strong intution: Claire has demonstrated an ability to discern Cid's thoughts. In the light novel, she quickly discovered that Cid was contemplating going limp and napping. In the manga, she sensed that Cid found it troublesome to deal with her and would allow her to pin him down and sleep. She sat on top of him while she strangled him. Claire claims that she always knows what he's thinking, as she can read his thoughts, making it impossible for him to deceive her.
- Posture Recognition: Claire has shown that she can recognize the way how Cid stands. Even finding his posture and stances in his Shadow persona to be similar to each other.
Powers[]
- Magic: Claire has developed a good talent for handling the sword and magic. She started to show a good skill for using the sword and magic following the birth of her brother, but soon after she started training with Cid even though she could see that he was not improving. Not at all, she learned that his brother gave him advice on how to use and handle magic rather than having more power, at the level that his swordsmanship was roughly comparable and that his growth and development with the sword were normal.
Despite the fact that she was older than Cid, it was still extremely nice and suggested learning more than what she had already learned. After a while, she started to heed her brother's counsel and instruction, which helped her become more and better at using it. She never questioned how her brother learned about it or how he came to possess the ability to heal people and herself normally at the age of 12, she strengthen her sword with magic destroy a boulder with her sword. Even after Claire's possession is cured and she receives power from Aurora, her body can't withstand the strain when Aurora temporarily takes over due to Aurora's sheer prowess. Claire possesses a fairly large reservoir of mana. A device that quantifies magical power displayed a value of 1917.
- Healing Magic: During her encounter with Juggernaut, Clarie tried to heal Mary when she was heavily injred from an attack from Juggernaut.(Anime Only)
- Magic Sealing: During her battle with Elisabeth, Claire's body came into contact with the symptoms of Elisabeth's Blood curse, which resurfaced her Demon Possession symptoms. Since Demon Possession and Vampire Progenitor come from the same bloodline before splitting off, the reunion of the two bloodlines caused the magic in Claire's body to go out of control. Lacking the ability to control it, Aurora inscribed a magical insignia on Claire's right arm (left in the anime), which starts to appear in ancient magical circles on the back of her hand (in the anime, the mark is red with a geometric pattern and a chemistry sequence that reaches down to her forearm). This mark is meant to help her learn how to control her powers while the two distinct bloods adapt within her body. In dangerous situations, Aurora's consciousness takes control of Claire's body to fight on her behalf and protect her. In this state, Claire's eyes turn violet. But Aurora leading her power quickly deplets Claire's mana. As she learns to control her newfound powers, Claire eventually accesses Aurora's ability to control blood. After having the right arm of Siablos be forcibly merged into her body, the seal on her hand would take on another seal.
- Blood Magic: Later on, Claire would awaken Aurora's Blood-manipulation abilities. She does not, however, use the ability as well.
- Blood Manipulation: Claire is able to extend the blood from her limps, such as her arm and foot, and control or manipulate the blood that comes from her own body. She can swat people away with the tendril. Additionally, extend the tendril and wrap it around her right hand.
Martial Arts[]
Claire has demonstrated that she is capable of engaging in hand-to-hand fighting, using her elbow and bare hands to fight, as well as kicking or striking with her knee. She would pick up Cid's technique for moving her body to attack with her knee and elbow.

To her younger brother Cid, whom she continuously trained and reprimanded whenever he was slacking off, Claire had demonstrated that she was firm and severe. Although Claire is stern with her brother, she truly cares about him and is doing everything she can to help him grow up and have a better future.
When she was younger, Claire was happy about his birth and, as a result of her irresponsible actions, they got into their fair share of trouble. Her brother had to intervene to save them. For this, she adores him. She is therefore offended when people disparage Cid and say that the two are mismatched brothers. Her discovery that she had Demonic Possession, which made her feel as though she had little time remaining, contributed to her excessive attachment to Cid. However, she was completely ignorant that Cid had already cured her.
She had demonstrated an excessive level of brother-protectiveness. She will let her anger run wild on anyone who attempts to hurt him. When she imprisoned her sibling, not even Princess Iris was safe from her rage. Although Cid often regards his sister as "annoying and troublesome" due to her clingy behavior towards him, he has already shown that he really cares about her.
Mr. Kagenou[]
Claire's father, who she despises because of his cowardice and continuous attempts to evade his duties as the family's leader. Due to her father's cowardice, many people always refer to him as "baldy," and Claire has no reservations about labeling him that.
Mrs. Kagenou[]
Although Claire and her mother's connection is unclear, she at least seems to value her more than her father.
Mary[]
During the Red Moon Affair, Mary and Claire connected over a common objective. With Mary's expertise in vampire hunting, Claire accompanied her in an attempt to save Cid, but instead the two discovered a fallen dark knight child who resembled Cid in some ways. When Aurora seized control of her body and collaborated with Shadow Garden, they were able to flee alive, and Claire was reunited with her brother. She bid Mary farewell and took Elizabeth somewhere secure to start their lives over.
Aurora[]
During the fight with Elisabeth, Aurora first appeared to Claire in her thoughts, which she was able to do because she is her daughter. In order to defend her, the sorceress then assumed control of her body. By doing this, she was able to repel the Blood Queen long enough for the Shadow to come and save her. The sorceress continued to visit Claire's consciousness, frequently interfering with her everyday life, and after a strange scar emerged on her hand, indicating that she had become Aurora's host. The sorceress declines to elucidate, claiming that "that person" is attempting to safeguard Claire despite Aurora's repeated inquiries about who she is and what is happening to her.
Nina[]
After Nina entered Midgar, the two grew close, and Claire was unaware of Nina's true allegiance to Zeta.
Alexia Midgar[]
Alexia is respected by Claire because she is a royalty and an underclassmen.
Iris Midgar[]
Even though she was the Royal, Claire was prepared to harm Iris in order to protect her sibling. After Alexia's return and the terror assault on the academy was put down, Claire and Iris became close because they shared concerns about their younger brothers bothering them as older sisters.
Zeta[]
Zeta sent Nina to sneak into the Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy to observe Claire when she started exhibiting signs of having become Diablos' host. Zeta's fears were confirmed, and she forcibly absorb Diablos' severed limb with Claire, so that she could make Shadow immortal.

- Claire's name means "bright" or "clear' in French.
- Claire is the only person who can threaten or harm Cid without incurring the wrath of the Seven Shadows.
- Claire is the only non-Shadow Garden member to be cured of Demon Possession by Cid.
- Claire is the only member of Cid's family who has been honored with titles and references as signs of respect by Shadow Garden.
- Claire never loves/respect her father when she insulted him by calling him as "Baldy" for his cowardice.
- Claire has shown that she's able to guess on what Cid's thinking. As seen she was able to guess that Cid was think about taking a nap as she throttled him when she was angry at him for making her wait at his dorm.
- Claire had her first kiss taken by Mary, however, it had zero romantic intent, as Mary just needed to drink Claire's blood to restore her vampiric powers, and didn't wish to harm her with a piercing neck wound. Even so, Claire was mildly flustered from startling until the distraction of a danger.
- Claire shares some similarites with Akane Nishino.
- Both have black hair and red eyes (after Akane awakened her powers).
- Both have a similar obsession with Minoru/Cid.
- Both were once kidnapped and were saved by him.
