Class 78 are a group of major characters in the visual novel Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and it's anime adaptation Danganronpa: The Animation and it's sequel series Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School. They are a class of 16 students Hope's Peak Academy who were protected by the school after it was converted into a shelter by Jin Kirigiri in order to save Hope Peak's remaining students after the tragedy drove the world into a state of chaos and despair. But they were later thrust into a killing game by Monokuma after he murdered Jin to become the headmaster.

  • Makoto Naegi - Known as the Ultimate Lucky Student/Hope, he is a good-hearted and caring but insecure young man with an optimistic and positive spirit. After embracing his identity as the Ultimate Hope, he finally stands up to Junko and puts an end to the killing game.
  • Kyoko Kirigiri - Known as the Ultimate Detective, she is a mysterious and stoic woman and the daughter of the school's headmaster Jin. She's responsible for teaching Makoto how to solve the murders that occur during the killing game and helps him learn to accept his role as the Ultimate Hope.
  • Byakuya Togami - Known as the Ultimate Affluent Prodigy, he is an arrogant and snobbish heir to the highly wealthy and successful Togami Corporation. He often looks down upon the other students and has a hostile attitude towards a majority of them for most of the first game.
  • Aoi Asahina - Known as the Ultimate Swimming Pro, she's a cheerful and bubbly student with a love of sports of all kinds and a close friendship with Sakura.
  • Yasuhiro Hagakure - Known as the Ultimate Clairvoyant, he's an incredibly idiotic and slow-witted boy in spite of his position who's also very laid-back.
  • Toko Fukawa - Known as the Ultimate Writing Prodigy, she has a deep love for literature and a depressive and often aggressive personality. She's often seen obsessing over Byakuya.
    • Genocide Jack - Known as the Ultimate Murderous Fiend, she's Toko split personality; a mad serial killer who shares her obsessive nature towards Byakuya. But unlike Toko, she hasn't lost her memories of the tragedy.
  • Sayaka Maizono - Known as the Ultimate Pop Sensation, she's the cheerful leader of a popular idol group who soon proves how far she's willing to go to keep her dream alive.
  • Leon Kuwata - Known as the Ultimate Baseball Star, he hates baseball in spite of his title and has a bisterous and flirty personality.
  • Chihiro Fujisaki - Known as the Ultimate Programmer, he is a shy crossdresser who took on the appearance of a female in order to escape the bullying that had plagued him throughout many years of his childhood.
  • Mondo Owada - Known as the Ultimate Bike Gang Leader, he's a student who hides his guilt for his brother's death behind his tough and aggressive persona.
  • Kiyotaka Ishimaru - Known as the Ultimate Moral Compass, he served as the class rep and is a stickler for rules/ Having a strong friendship with Mondo, he developed an alternate personality, Kiyondo, after the latter's death.
  • Hifumi Yamada - Known as the Ultimate Fanfic Creator, he's an obsessive otaku with an attraction towards 2-D women and admires Celeste throughout much of the game.
  • Celestia Ludenberg - Known as the Ultimate Gambler, she's a sophisticated woman who aims to become rich and own her own castle someday, which eventually becomes her motive to murder.
  • Sakura Ogami - Known as the Ultimate Martial Artist, she's an incredibly strong but gentle student who cares deeply for her fellow students and proves she would even go as far as to sacrifice her own life for theirs.
  • Mukuro Ikusaba - Known as the Ultimate Soldier, she's the secret 16th student who posed as her twin sister Junko before being betrayed and murdered by her.
  • Junko Enoshima - Known as the Ultimate Fashionista/Despair/Analyst, she's the mastermind of the killing game who infiltrated the school with her sister in order to launch her plan of throwing the school into despair during the tragedy.
