~ Clay after Branch and Poppy left. |
Clay is one of the three tritagonists (alongside John Dory and Spruce) in Trolls Band Together. He is the humorous member of BroZone, the younger brother of John Dory and Spruce, and the older brother of Floyd and Branch.
He and Viva are friends who work together at Hole N' Fun. Viva takes care of the fun part while Clay handles the more boring tasks.
He is voiced by Kid Cudi in his first heroic role.
Personality[]
Clay, the middle brother, was known as the playful soul of the band, seemingly relishing in fun more than anyone. Yet, beneath this playful surface, he yearned to be taken seriously. Fatigued by being seen solely as comic relief, he even joined a book club before the dissolution of BroZone. Despite his playful facade, Clay possessed a strong streak of sarcasm, fostering a more serious demeanor. He exhibited boldness and cynicism towards John Dory's leadership.
After leaving the band, he found freedom to adopt a more responsible persona. His days were dedicated to assisting Viva in managing Hole N' Fun, assuming the role of a responsible overseer among the Putt-Putt Trolls. Despite this transformation, his siblings acknowledged that he retained his fun essence.
Clay leave behind his role alongside Viva and the other Putt-Putt Trolls to rescue Floyd, showcasing his willingness to take risks for the sake of others, especially for his family.
Biography[]
Past[]
Clay was a member of BroZone, the most popular Boy Band among the Pop Trolls. He gained the reputation of being "the Fun One," enjoying pranks and generally being goofy. However, over time, this self-image began to bother him. He joined a book club and wanted to be taken more seriously. Yet, John Dory aimed for their band to be perfect, forcing Clay to maintain his image regardless of how he felt. John Dory even compelled him to wear Funderpants. During BroZone's final performance, Clay attempted to voice his opinion about this image to John Dory, but it fell on deaf ears when John Dory insisted they needed a perfect Family Harmony or they'd be nothing.
The brothers took the stage but failed to achieve Family Harmony. Moreover, their performance utterly failed when they hesitated following John Dory's example. Clay finally spoke up, stating he was more then just “the fun one”, and would find trolls who take me seriously, finding an ally in Spruce, who was tired of upholding his own image as "the heartthrob." A fight ensued, and the duo quit; John Dory stormed off first. Though Floyd pleaded with Clay and Spruce to stay, they too gave up in the midst of the plea.
Clay seemed to have been around for a while, avoiding Bergen Town (though unaware of Grandma Rosiepuff's death during that time, as he didn't seem to be home). He was among the Trolls who split during The Last Trollstice. The Trolls from that group ended up separated from the others when a rock fell, losing sight of their King, King Peppy, calling "No Troll left behind." Unable to reunite and left behind, they took another tunnel and ended up running in the opposite direction of the rest of the Pop Trolls.
At the other end of the tunnel, they stumbled upon an abandoned mini-golf field in Bergen, the Hole'N'Fun, and settled there, becoming the Putt Putt Trolls. Viva, presuming the worst had happened to the other Trolls, assumed leadership. Clay befriended Viva and eventually began assisting her in managing things in their village. Free from the burden of being "the Fun One," Clay took life very seriously, which pleased Viva, as her paranoia and trauma from the events in Bergen Town haunted her. She wouldn't let anyone leave under any circumstance, fearing it would attract the Bergens to them. With Clay's help, they spent the next 20 years preparing for an attack in Bergen.
Trolls Band Together[]
Years later, Clay finally reunited with his two older brothers and his younger brother, Branch, who recruited him to join in rescuing the captured Floyd from Velvet and Veneer. Despite his friendship with Bruce, he still harbored animosity toward John Dory and had yet to acknowledge Branch as an adult. Learning that accompanying the remaining brothers meant leaving Viva alone, he explained to his siblings about Viva's trauma, not wanting her to be upset and alone. However, he ended up having no choice but to leave with the group when Viva attempted to stop them from departing, apologizing to Viva for having to prioritize Floyd first.
Later, Clay attempted to rehearse with his three brothers, but he and Bruce ended up heatedly arguing with John Dory's perfectionism. When Branch realized that Clay and the other two would split after finding Floyd, he confronted them, revealing that Grandma Rosiepuff had died and been eaten. Clay was left traumatized and shocked, not expecting Grandma to have not survived. Also, Clay and his two older brothers realize how badly they hurt Branch, especially when they realized how much he cared about them and waited for them for years. In addition, Clay realized his actions exposed his two youngest siblings to danger and began to have second thoughts about splitting up from his brothers again as he realized that they're the only remaining family he has left and wants them back in his life.
Unfortunately, Clay and Bruce hadn't resolved their animosity with John Dory, as they agreed that saving Floyd and apologizing to Branch was more important than their petty disagreement. However, their plan to venture up Mount Rageous failed as the three were soon overrun by the Rageon siblings. Velvet then contained Clay and Floyd within her shoulder pads. During the car chase, Clay was drained before being saved by Viva. However, he could only watch in desperation as Velvet drained the last essence of Floyd.
Despite being trapped in his diamond bottle, Clay finally put aside his differences with his two older brothers and Branch, playing "Better Place" together. When they reached the pinnacle of harmony, Floyd joined Clay and the others, and Clay and his three brothers watched Floyd sacrifice himself for them. Initially devastated by Floyd's sacrifice, Clay and the other brothers were relieved when Floyd was revived through their love for him and each other. He then presumptuously told the imprisoned Rageon siblings that he would have to reclaim ownership of his yacht for unpaid taxes, which Veneer agreed to.
In the end, Clay, also on behalf of the rest of their brothers, apologized to Branch for not being able to see him grow up, a gesture Branch wholeheartedly forgave. He then joined Branch's performance to celebrate the BroZone reunion.
