~ Clay as he finds himself a new purpose in destroying Monstrox and Jestro once and for all. |
Sir Clay Moorington is one of the five main protagonists of the LEGO Nexo Knights TV series. He is the son of Wanda Moorington, taken in by the wizard Merlok after his mother turned evil. He studied in the Knights Academy and eventually became one of the Nexo Knights, taking his job of protecting the kingdom of Knighton from any threats very seriously.
He was voiced by Giles Panton.
History[]
Pre-series[]
Clay was born to a witch named Wanda Mornington and a knight whose identity is still unknown. Eventually, as his mother succumbed to the evil planted into her by Monstrox, he ended up working as a sweeper in Dnullib at a young age until he was taken in by Wanda's brother, Merlok, unaware that the wizard was his uncle.
He studied at the Knights Academy and eventually graduated alongside four of his classmates: Aaron, Axl, Lance and Macy. During this period, he also befriended Jestro, being one of the few people who sympathised with the unlucky jester.
Season 1[]
He and the other Nexo Knights arrive at their graduation ceremony and show off their skills, but unexpectedly have to fight fake monsters created by Merlok. Later, he comforts Jestro while he is about to perform, and tries to reach out to him when the jester accidentally cuts off the power in the capital. Finding his friend in Merlok's library, Clay discovers, to his shock, that Jestro has turned evil and released Lava Monsters from the Book of Monsters. Merlok sacrifices himself to stop the two, leaving Clay grieving over him and doubting whether he is worthy of his position of a knight.
He goes on to become the official leader of the Nexo Knights, leading them in countless battle against Jestro and his Lava Monsters. During the Monsters' assault on Knightonia, Merlok 2.0 uploads his most powerful spell into Clay's weapons, allowing him to banish Jestro and the Book of Monsters for the time being.
Season 2[]
After Jestro sacrifices himself, letting Clay escape with the Book of Betrayal, the knight decides to trade the book for the jester's freedom. However, he ends up captured by the Book of Monsters who intends to take his body and become Monstrox, the arch-necromancer, once again. The villain's plan is foiled when Clay strikes him with Techcalibur, seemingly destroying him.
Season 3[]
After Monstrox's defeat, Clay starts training the Knights Academy cadets, but returns to his duties once the necromancer resurfaces. During one of the missions, he is struck by Monstrox's lightning, causing him to slowly turn into stone. Eventually, he has to use a mechanical battle suit to even be able to fight. He manages to save the captured Queen Halbert from Ruina Stoneheart and fights off Rock Monsters until he is fully petrified, with his comrades mourning him but choosing to keep this tragedy a secret.
Season 4[]
Clay is resurrected by Monstrox, becoming fully loyal to him. The knights are hesitant to fight their friend, as the only way to defeat him - Combo Nexo Power - would destroy him for good. Merlok attempts to stop him with a spell, but it only leads to the knight being blasted across the kingdom and losing his memory. His amnesia allows him to be manipulated by Jorah Tightwad and help him in his plans to drive out the citizens of Nothing Hill to proceed with his mining operations, but the other knights manage to turn him back to the side of the good.
After a confrontation with Ruina, Clay begins having anger issues, leaving him worried and searching for a way to control it. After discovering that Ruina is his mother, he only grows angrier and more convinced that he is a threat to his friends' lives and ends up forcing Macy to re-petrify him with a Nexo Power.
However, the magic inside Clay turns him back into human form, seemingly ridding him of any corruption he had. He uses his newfound magic abilities to destroy Monstrox once and for all. Despite this, he wonders about his mother's fate and what made her evil, promising to find her.
LEGO Nexo Knights magazine (non-canon)[]
After Monstrox's defeat, Clay found himself at odds with Aaron at times over who should lead the team now that he was no longer stone. When Monstrox came back as a digital virus, he nevertheless fought him and his army of InfectoByters. During the final battle, Clay entered Knighton's cyberspace where Monstrox and Merlok 2.0 were fighting. As the latter became too weakened, he sacrificed himself by giving up his life force to give his nephew a fighting chance. As Ava used Merlok's energy to spawn Clay's battle mech in the cyberspace, the knight took control of it, fought Monstrox and finally killed him for good. The cyberspace around Clay then began to fade, making him believe that he would die as well, but he ended up returning to the real world instead, keeping the remnants of Merlok's power in his sword.
Personality[]
Clay takes his job as a knight much more seriously that his friends. Courageous and confident, he strives to protect the people of Knighton and trains day and night to be in perfect form any time. He strictly upholds the values of the Knight's Code which, however, tends to make him somewhat impulsive as he expects the same discipline from his teammates. He often argues with Lance due to the latter's tendencies to slack off, although the two still respect each other.
Clay is also shown to be quite generous, as he was one of the few people who didn't laugh at Jestro and wanted to help him. He was grateful to the jester for saving him and even went against his friends' wishes to save him from the Book of Monsters in return.
In his stone form, he grows much more ruthless and wrathful, even willing to kill Jestro which he'd normally argue against, which leads him to believe that he is too dangerous to be set free. However, this is heavily implied to be the result of Ruina's dark magic influencing him, as he switches back to his original personality after regaining human form.
