Heroine Overview

All this. It's worth it. All those times you'd ask me if we'd find a home... All I could ever tell you was "we'll see". And your face would fall every single time. [...] That's what I told myself. But you want to know something I didn't tell you? I never had a plan. I never knew where we were going. I never knew anything. I just fought and fought and fought, and hoped you didn't notice. Hoped we'd find something before you did. Did I do a good job?
~ Clementine to AJ.

Clementine is the main protagonist of Telltale Games' The Walking Dead video game series and the titular main protagonist of the Clementine graphic novel series. She is a survivor of the zombie outbreak who was taken in and cared for by a man named Lee Everett when she was 8 years old. He taught her how to survive and protect herself, and over the course of the franchise's four main installments, she used those skills to protect those she cared for and loved, including Alvin Junior.

She was voiced by Melissa Hutchison, who also voiced Alicia Winston in Time Crisis 3.

Personality[]

Clementine, despite her young age, displays exceptional intelligence and maturity, which can be attributed to the harsh environment she has grown up in. She attended school up until the first grade, which she found relatively easy. Her ability to think practically and improvise is evident, such as when she helps Lee secure a door using his father's cane during a walker attack.

Her keen perceptiveness allows her to notice details that most children her age would overlook. For instance, when Ben faces interrogation by Lilly, Clementine intervenes and pulls him away from the argument to spare him any trouble, using the excuse of showing him her drawings. Clementine's intelligence also makes her a quick learner, enabling her to adapt rapidly to the zombie-infested world. She hones her marksmanship skills during a train journey with Lee and later learns from Jane how to dispatch walkers quietly and efficiently while scavenging for supplies.

Unlike Duck, who often remains oblivious, Clementine is highly attuned to the group dynamics and events unfolding around her, such as the power struggle between Lilly and Kenny. In "Starved For Help," she acknowledges her parents' absence, expressing a preference for comforting lies over harsh truths, although this may vary depending on player choices.

Clementine is not one to conform blindly and isn't afraid to voice her opinions. She believes in the importance of altruism unless faced with threats. She disagrees with the group's decision to loot a station wagon filled with rations left behind by other survivors, arguing that the owners might return for their supplies. Despite her maturity, Clementine retains some innocence typical of children. She admits to playing a prank on Duck by placing a bug on his pillow and finds the idea of licking a salt lick "gross." Her idealistic perspective on how society should behave in a zombie apocalypse sometimes clashes with the harsh realities, leading to her misunderstanding certain events. Additionally, she lacks comprehension regarding topics like sex and menstruation, possibly due to her young age and the absence of consistent guidance.

Despite potential disagreements with Lee's choices or his approach, Clementine regards him as a father figure who can be trusted to protect her, a relationship that greatly contributes to her growth and maturity. After enduring traumatic experiences, witnessing her undead parents, and making difficult choices like leaving Lee to turn or shooting him, Clementine's innocence wanes. Over a year later, she has become more hardened and less idealistic, focusing solely on survival. She is now better equipped to defend herself and make tough decisions when needed, though her resourcefulness remains her primary asset due to her young age.

Depending on player choices, Clementine can display a cold and ruthless side, resorting to blackmail or supporting the killing of those she deems deserving. On the other hand, she may attempt to appeal to people's better nature, indicating that some faith in humanity persists. Her maturity becomes evident when others seek her advice, and she is perceived as mature for her age, considering the harsh realities of the apocalypse.

As Clementine continues to evolve between Season Two and meeting Javier Garcia, she becomes a seasoned survivor, adapting various survival and combat techniques. She maintains a short haircut, employs the use of walker guts to blend in with herds, and employs Jane's knee-strike technique for subduing walkers. She later imparts these skills to AJ and, to some extent, Gabriel Garcia.

When leaving the New Frontier, Clementine adopts a more isolated and detached demeanor, believing that forming attachments only leads to pain and loss, echoing Jane's perspective. Nevertheless, she retains her warmth and trust for those who have earned it, particularly Javier, helping him with the goal of saving Richmond.

Upon rescuing A.J. and settling into a more stable life, Clementine embraces a more cheerful demeanor to shield A.J. from her own grim outlook. She focuses on teaching him valuable survival skills and moral lessons. She longs to find a permanent home, and upon discovering the Ericson's Boarding School, she finally finds a sense of safety and belonging.

Clementine's attitude toward her former friend Lilly is marked by indifference, as Lilly has become her enemy and has sanctioned AJ's mistreatment at the hands of Abel.

  • If Clem stays at Wellington, she would work as a hunter on Tuesday and Thursday, and work as a patroller on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
  • If Clementine fails to get help from Alvin and rejects Sarah's friendship offer, later in the shed she will have the option of saying "Screw you guys!"
  • In "All That Remains", at Sam's camp, if Clementine checks the barbecue and then the cooler (in that order), she will grumble that she hates scavengers.
  • With Christa, Kenny (determinant), and Lilly (determinant) missing, Clementine is the only character who appeared in the first game confirmed to be alive.
  • If Kenny dies (either by Clem shooting him or leaving Wellington with him) and AJ kills Lilly, Clem is the only pharmacy survivor to have survived the games.
  • If Lee stays silent when given the option to have Clementine either shoot him or leave him, she will make the decision herself, with Lee's past actions determining her choice.
  • Clementine has several car crashes: one during "No Going Back", one with Kenny during a flashback in "Ties That Bind - Part 1" (determinant), and one early on in "Done Running".
  • Depending on player choices, Clem can be in some way responsible for the deaths of all three leaders of the motel survivors: Lee (directly), Kenny (directly or indirectly), and Lilly (caused).
  • Clem was born on 26/10/94; the world collapsed on 20/7/03, and the first game's final chapter takes place on 1/11/03, during which the Stranger says Clem's ninth birthday was six days prior.
  • Clementine has been held captive up to eight times: by the St. Johns, the Save-Lots Bandits, the Stranger, the Cabin Group, Carver's Group, Prescott, the New Frontier (determinant), and the Delta.
  • If Lee gives her nothing to eat in "Starved For Help", and later stops her from eating human meat, she can be one of three characters that doesn't eat in this episode, the others being Lee (determinant) and Mark (determinant).
  • Clementine (alongside Lilly and potentially Carley) can directly kill the joint-second most people on-screen out of all the Motel Survivors during the first game, with a total of 2 - just behind Lee, with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10.
  • When attacked by a zombie in the shed in "All That Remains", Clementine's fight with it is almost identical to Lee's fight with Sandra in "A New Day" of Season 1, following a trend within the Video Game to symbolically mimic previous scenes.
  • If the player chooses, Clementine's first cigarette can be shared with Bonnie. Moreover, if the player chooses, Clementine's first alcoholic drink can be a swig of Nick's moonshine or Jane's rum; if she tasted both, she comments that the rum was better.
  • Clementine, Violet, Walter, Matthew, Zachary, Jonas, Paige, Javier García, Paul Monroe, Minerva, James, and Charlie are the twelve LGBT characters in the games. Clementine is also the first to appear. Clementine and Violet can also be the fourth same-sex couple in the game.
  • She survived her bite in "Take Us Back" due to her leg getting amputated shortly thereafter, making her one of the many amputees in The Walking Dead, and one of the five characters who survive a bite due to amputation and confirmed to be alive, others being Lilly, Elton, Lydia and Alicia Clark.
  • Throughout the series, Clem has travelled a considerable distance over the span of nine years: TWD is set in Georgia, TWD 2 is set in North Carolina (and later Tennessee), one of the endings of TWD 2 is set in Ohio, TWD 3 is set in Virginia, TWD 4 is set in West Virginia, and the comic then takes Clem to Vermont, Canada and Greenland in the upcoming third volume.
  • In "A House Divided", there is a dialogue option where she tells Luke about how she had a treehouse once, before adding "I hated it". However, in "Take Us Back", she can mention it and seemingly look back on it fondly. She could have possibly meant that she hated having to hide in it during the outbreak's start.
  • During the first game of War in "Done Running", if Clementine asks the group what's the nastiest thing they ate. Clem claims to have eaten a guy's leg. Although she plays it off by saying it's just a joke after the group's understandably shocked reaction, this can be true depending on if Lee stopped her from eating the meat in time at St. John's dairy farm.
  • In the second game, Clementine has the torn photo of Lee from "A New Day" and her drawing of Kenny's family from "Long Road Ahead", which she keeps in her backpack from the same episode. It is unknown if she had convinced Christa and Omid to venture to Macon, Georgia with her to retrieve the former after the events of "No Time Left", or if she had secretly kept it since "A New Day".
  • Her outfit in the fourth game is a callback to Lee's primary outfit. Lee wore a blue shirt and Clementine wears a blue jacket. Both have rolled sleeves and Clem's white hoodie sleeves going below the rolled sleeves of her jacket mimic the white undershirt sleeves that went past Lee's rolled shirt sleeves. Also, her jacket belonged to a group known as the Silver Stallion Motorcycle Club.
  • Clementine can determinantly never fire a rifle throughout all games. In fact, she only has two opportunities to use one, firing a maximum of two rounds during "A House Divided" when fighting walkers at Moonstar Lodge, and an inconclusive amount of times using an assault rifle in "Ties That Bind - Part 2" while defending Prescott from the New Frontier, assuming Javier chose not to surrender.
  • Clementine has kept more physical mementos of people she cared about than anyone else: her father's hat, a photo of Lee, a drawing of Kenny's family, hair clips from Lilly, a gold watch from Pete (determinant), a jacket from Bonnie, Sarah's glasses (determinant), Jane's nail file (determinant), Kenny's hat (determinant), Gabe's playing cards (determinant), and Violet's button (determinant). Lilly's hair clips and her father's hat are the only mementos she still has regardless of the player's choices.
  • Clementine, Lee, and Kenny appear in all episodes of the first game.
    • Clementine is also one of three characters to appear in all five episodes of the second game, with the others being Luke and Rebecca, though Rebecca only appears as a corpse in "No Going Back".
    • Clementine is also one of the eight characters to appear in all five episodes of the third game, with the others being Javier, Kate, Gabriel, Eleanor, David, Tripp, and Conrad, with the latter two being determinant.
    • Clementine is also one of the ten characters to appear in all four episodes of the fourth game, with the others being AJ, Tennessee, Violet, Willy, Omar, Ruby, Louis, Aasim, and Rosie.
  • In "A New Day", Lee and Clementine spend the night in a barn the night of arriving at Hershel's farm. Whilst there, Clementine comments on the fecal smell in the barn. Due to a lack of descriptive words, Lee is given the chance to finish her sentence with "shit," "manure," or "...you know..." This has a lasting and goofy effect.
    • In "Starved For Help", she will repeat Lee's choice of words (or lack thereof) to Duck when describing the smell in the barn.
    • In "All That Remains", when Clementine accidentally knocks over her water bottle in the pit-stop bathroom, she will instinctively curse "Oh, shoot" or "Oh, shit" depending on Lee's words.
  • As of "Suffer The Children", she and Lilly are the only motel survivors confirmed alive. However, if Clem orders AJ to shoot Lilly in "Broken Toys", Clem will be the only one alive.
    • As of "No Going Back", Clementine is the only cabin survivor still alive.
    • Clem, Javier, Eleanor, Paul, and Fern are the only characters alive at the end of A New Frontier regardless of player choices.
    • Clem, AJ, Willy, Omar, Ruby, Aasim, and Rosie are the only characters alive at the end of The Final Season regardless of player choices.
  • Depending on the player's choices, Clementine can kill no one (directly) during the first two games, and a maximum of four, those being: the Stranger, Lee, Sarita, and Kenny. There was a non-canon cut choice where Clementine had the option of shooting Mike during "No Going Back" after discovering his betrayal, which remained within the PlayStation 3 version of said episode for a few days following its release, but the option was soon removed and confirmed to have been left in by accident.
    • Depending on player choices, Clementine can kill no named characters (directly) throughout all of the first three games.
    • Several living characters are directly killed by Clementine regardless of player choice: Eli (accidental), Yonatan, Gad, Gina, Rodney, Eddie, and Helen.
  • After the "alone" ending of the second game, Clementine will lose her left ring-finger in between the second and third games. However, Clementine still has her left ring-finger in the Clementine comic, making the second game's "alone" ending non-canon.
    • The "alone" ending is obtained in one of three ways: kill Kenny then abandon Jane, let Kenny kill Jane then abandon him, or let Kenny kill Jane then kill him.
  • Clementine uses the walker guts trick six times.
    • "No Time Left" - Lee rubs walker guts on Clem and himself in order to mask their scent, as to escape Savannah.
    • "In Harm's Way" - the cabin group do it in order to escape from Carver's group.
    • "No Going Back" - she covers both herself and AJ in walker guts, thus allowing the two to safely travel through the herd. (determinant; "alone" ending)
    • "Above The Law" - she had to do it off-screen just to get through the herd near Richmond. (determinant; if Javi killed Conrad earlier)
    • "Broken Toys" - Clem, AJ, and Louis/Violet cover themselves in walker guts, so they could sneak onto the S.S. Stewarts Fitzgerald and save their friends.
    • "Take Us Back" - off-screen, AJ covers Clem in walker guts and carries her out on a wheelbarrow after chopping off her leg, bringing her back to the school and saving her life.
  • Clementine's strength drastically increases throughout the games.
    • In TWD 2:
      • "All That Remains" - she struggles to fight Winston while fleeing in the woods.
      • "A House Divided" - she is easily knocked down after firing a rifle.
      • "In Harm's Way" - she struggles to get a walker off her.
      • "In Harm's Way" - she collapses after being slapped by Carver. (determinant)
      • "No Going Back" - she is knocked down while Kenny and Jane fight, and has difficulty getting back up.
    • In A New Frontier:
      • "Ties That Bind Part 1" - she chops down a tree to stop a truck.
      • "Ties That Bind Part 1" - she runs through herds of walkers while firing a shotgun.
      • "Ties That Bind Part 1" - she defends herself and AJ from walkers despite having a finger stuck in a car door. (determinant)
      • "Above the Law" - she knocks David down when jumping on him, and holds him at gunpoint. (determinant)
    • In The Final Season:
      • "Done Running" - she shatters a windshield with two hard kicks
      • "Done Running" - she beats Marlon in a fight at the end. (determinant)
      • "Suffer The Children" - even if Abel maintains both of his arms, Clementine can beat him in a fight, smashing him through a balustrade and causing him to fall off the balcony of the boarding school, though he can pull her down with him.
      • "Suffer The Children" - she manages to fight Lilly and dislodge a gun from her hands, despite Clementine being wounded.
      • "Broken Toys" - she knocked out Minerva with two punches, despite being wounded by the latter. (determinant)

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Melissa Hutchison won a best actress award in gaming for her performance.
  • If Clem left Wellington with Kenny, unused audio reveals that he taught her how to ride a motorcycle.
  • The game's developers revealed that her surname was originally "Crawford", before the developers of "Around Every Corner" invented the neighborhood of Crawford.
  • Clementine was originally designed as white, but the creators wanted her to look as if she could be Lee's daughter, yet they left her Caucasian character model in the game.
  • On 13/4/21, it was confirmed that she would appear in Clementine Lives as part of Skybound X Issue 1. This eventually led to the creation of Skybound Comet's Clementine graphic novels. She is one of three characters from the games who appears in the Clementine series, the other two being AJ and Lee.
  • It was given by Telltale that supposedly the game would involve Clementine and her brother, but due to the pre-existing relationship before the apocalypse, her brother was cut from the game, replaced by Lee Everett. It was also given that Clementine almost got cut from the game, as Telltale was concerned that the players wouldn't care about her.
  • Melissa Hutchinson initially stated that Clementine was 17 in the fourth game, though she later amended her statement to 16. Melissa also mentioned that Clementine was originally supposed to start at age 7 (hence her being in the first grade) because of the change Melissa says that the girl was in the second grade at the start of the game, although Lee Everett assumed she was in first, due to Katjaa's comment.
  • Telltale's staff have given conflicting statements regarding Clementine's ethnicity.
    • Jessica Brezzo stated in an online interview that Clem was African-American.
    • In 2019, an anonymous commenter claiming to be Brezzo replied to a comment on the post of the interview's Wikia page stating that at the time of the interview she hadn't spoken to Vanaman or Hutchison on the subject, hadn't realized it was a topic of debate among the fandom, and never stated that Clem was solely African-American.
    • Sean Vanaman and Melissa Hutchison have stated she is mixed race in the 2013 "Saving Doug: Empathy, Character, and Choice in The Walking Dead" conference and "Walking Dead 'Cast 247: The Walking Dead: A New Frontier" podcast, respectively. Vanaman first confirmed that Clementine is mixed-race, and Hutchison later speculated her to be African-American and Asian. Clementine's character design in season one was inspired by art director Derek Sakai's daughter . This further supports the idea that she is intended to be African-American and Asian.
