Clive Rosfield is the main protagonist of the 2023 action role-playing game Final Fantasy XVI. He is the firstborn son of Archduke Elwin Rosfield and the sworn protector of his younger brother Joshua Rosfield, the Dominant of the Phoenix. Clive is also the Dominant of the mysterious dark Eikon, Ifrit, second Eikon of Fire also known as the Warden of the Inferno.
He is voiced by Ben Starr in English, and by Yuma Uchida as a teenager and by Yūya Uchida as an adult in Japanese. Yuma Uchida has also voiced Kawaki in Boruto and Megumi Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Appearance[]
Clive Rosfield is a tall, handsome man with a well-built physique. He has medium-length shaggy black hair and blue eyes, as well as an elegant facial structure which he likely inherited from his mother. After his capture by the Imperial Army, he was given the same large black Brand on his left cheek that Bearers bore. He later has his Brand removed with a scalpel, leaving scar tissue in its place.
As a teenager, Clive's physique was slender, yet still well-built. His hair, which was significantly shorter, was neatly brushed backwards save for bangs that covered his right eye.
History[]
Clive Rosfield was born in the year 845 as the firstborn son of Archduke Elwin Rosfield, the ruler of the Grand Duchy of Rosaria, and his wife Duchess Anabella Rosfield. For generations, House Rosfield had ruled Rosaria on account of the Dominant of the Phoenix, the Eikon of Fire, always being born into their line. The Eikons were eight ancient, gargantuan, magical beasts that were each tied to one of the eight magical elements. The Eikons dwelled in human vessels, known as "Dominants" that could wield their power. Prior to Clive's birth, the previous Dominant of Fire had been his late grandfather, and so it was expected that Clive would inherit the blessing.
Clive was raised in Rosalith Castle, the royal castle in the duchy's capital city Rosalith. Rosaria was one of several nations in Valisthea, a realm consisting of two continents called Storm and Ash. Rosaria was located in the central north-western part of Storm, the western continent. Valisthea was also home to the Mothercrystals, a set of five crystals the size of mountains. Shards of the Mothercrystals were used as a vital energy source due to being rich in Aether, and so many wars were fought over the Mothercrystals throughout history.
By 851, Anabella was pregnant with a second child. During his mother's pregnancy, Clive accompanied his father and his uncle Lord Byron Rosfield, who was an influential and wealthy merchant with a large fleet of ships, on a scouting expedition to Drake's Fang, the Mothercrystal of the Republic of Dhalmekia. The Dhalmekian Republic was a nation that bordered Rosaria to the south which mostly consisted of arid plains and deserts. On the journey back, Clive whipped Ambrosia too hard, as he wanted to be back in Rosaria for his sibling's birth. As a result, he was flung from his saddle and cried as his father tried to console him.
Not long afterwards, the new baby arrived. Named Joshua Rosfield, Clive visited the boy in his crib and soon came to love him deeply. Though Joshua was a sickly child, he inherited the Phoenix and was named heir instead of Clive. Duchess Anabella began to bear open contempt for Clive, as she believed that he, the healthy firstborn, should've inherited the Eikon of Fire instead of the weak secondborn. While she spurned Clive, Anabella loved Joshua and was fiercely protective of him. Realizing that he would never be Phoenix's host, Clive instead set his sights on becoming the "First Shield of Rosaria," the protector of his brother, the Dominant.
In 854, Elwin Rosfield defeated the Northern Territories, a nation to the north of Rosaria, in war and subsumed their lands into the Grand Duchy. In order to stop the Chieftain of the Northern Territories from taking any further actions, the archduke took his daughter as a political hostage and made her into a ward of House Rosfield. The daughter, Princess Jill Warrick, was in between the ages of Clive and Joshua and was raised alongside the boys with love and care. Both Clive and Joshua came to see Jill as a sister, a sentiment she echoed. Clive and Jill also came to harbor undeclared romantic feelings for each other.
