Clover is a supporting character of 1954 animated film Animal Farm. She is a good-hearted female horse and a close friend of Boxer.

Biography[]

In the beginning of Animal Farm she is describe as a "stout motherly mare approaching middle life, who had never quite got her figure back after her fourth foal" (1.3). She is a symbol of Russian working class.

Clover is the most motherly character of the story, She cares for the ducklings who lost their mother during Old Major's meeting. She is not very intelligent, however, and she learns the letters of the alphabet, but despite this, is illiterate.

When she suspects that the pigs are changing the Seven Commandments, she feels suspicious but isn't sure. When she sees pig sleeping in bed she believes that she can recall a rule against animals sleeping in beds. Since she is illiterate, Muriel reads the commandment "No animal may sleep in a bed with sheets" (6.13) for her, and she accepts the changes.

Clover begins to cry as more and more animals start becoming executed with Snowball being exiled. She tries to take care of Boxer and gets him to slow down after he is hurt in the Battle of the Windmill, but he refuses. Boxer collapses on the job, and the next few days, Clover stays by Boxer's side and tries to medicate him back to health. When the horse slaughterer comes to catch Boxer, she tries to save him and help him escape, but is unable to do so.
