~ Cobb Vanth. |
Cobb Vanth is the titular deuteragonist of the The Mandalorian episode "The Marshall" and a supporting character in its 2021-2022 spin-off series The Book of Boba Fett. Cobb Vanth is the person who calls the shots in the town of Mos Pelgo on Tatooine, who protects the residents. He is notable for being a sheriff with the Mandalorian armor of Boba Fett.
He is portrayed by Timothy Olyphant, who also played Agent 47 from the Hitman film adaptation and Raylan Givens from Justified, voiced the Spirit of the West from Rango, and voiced Grinch from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Appearance[]
Cobb Vanth is a human male with white skin, whitish hair, and hazel eyes. He most notably has the iconic Mandalorian armor of Boba Fett, which he obtained from Jawas by a bargain. The armor comes with a jetpack and a rocket launcher attached to its tip. From being a slave, he has a star-shaped scar on his back with many marks on it.
Personality[]
Cobb Vanth seems to add importance to his experiences, stating that through all of his tough times, he has earned the right to wear his Mandalorian armor despite not being a Mandalorian. Vanth is very protective of Mos Pelgo, and seems to face all problems with courage. To him, low odds are better than none, as proven by when he chooses to stand up against the Mandalorian, but knows he can't defeat the Krayt Dragon. However, when the Mandalorian offers to help him defeat the monster, he will put his life on the line as long as there's a chance of success. As a former slave, he understands the feeling of melancholy and helplessness, and fights for everyone's protection.
He shows loyalty to his town, and is the proud marshal of Mos Pelgo, stating that he calls the shots around there while standing up to the Mandalorian. By teaming up with Mando to take down the Krayt Dragon, he shows how far he will go to protect the people, and that he truly cares about doing the right thing. This is admirable considering he lives in a world filled with morally grey people, since the Empire has plunged the galaxy into ruin.
He is compassionate enough to save lives, but he can appear quite standoffish towards other alien species. The Mandalorian had to act as mediator between him, Jawas, and Tusken Raiders sometimes. He had an aversion towards Tusken Raiders before Mando got them to help the two of them. Eventually, he learned to show some more respect towards the Tusken Raiders however. Towards fellow good guys, he can be quite friendly, as Mando and Vanth officially became friends following their teamwork. Whether or not Vanth will reappear in The Mandalorian has yet to be revealed.
Story[]
Background[]
Cobb Vanth was present at the bar of Mos Pelgo when the Mining Collective came to take over the town. Vanth rescued the bartender and snuck out of the bar while escorting him. He then ran away as fast as he could. He likely didn't have plans to return to his now compromised home, but after a few days he was discovered by Jawas, collapsed in the desert sand. After being escorted onto the Sandcrawler, the Jawas gave him as much water as he wanted, and offered many items for the silicax oxalte crystals he had. He refused them all, and pointed at the Mandalorian armor. He returned home with Mandalorian armor, ready to fight the Mining Collective.
In trepidation, the Mining Collective failed to return adequate fire, and fled in a speeder vehicle. Using the rocket on his jetpack, he destroyed their vehicle. Being the savior of Mos Pelgo, he then became their mayor, earning the title of "sheriff" or "marshal". Under his protection, the residents were happy and never feared for their lives. He fought foreign gangsters and Tusken Raiders to protect his home.
Meeting the Mandalorian[]
The Mandalorian arrived in the town of Mos Pelgo in search of another Mandalorian. The bartender in the town tells him of a man known as "The Marshal", who looks like him. When the Marshal arrives, he affably invites Mando to have a drink with him. He takes off his helmet, and reveals he is not actually a Mandalorian. While Vanth compliments the Mandalorian for protecting the Child, Mando demands that he take off his armor. He then predicts that only one of them will get out of the cantina alive, and a standoff occurs.
Before anything could happen, the ground shook. Outside, the sand fell. The Krayt Dragon arrived. He explained to Mando that the Krayt Dragon had been eating his livestock, causing destruction, and terrorizing the people, and told Mando that if he helped him kill it, he would gladly offer him his armor. The Mandalorian too, gladly accepted. Mando's first step was to befriend some Tusken Raiders, who also hated the Krayt Dragon. Vanth expressed disgust at the ordeal, saying that they really were raiders, and savages. The Mandalorian had to sooth tensions between the Raiders and the Marshal.
They returned to the town, and Vanth told his people that they would team up with a Mandalorian and the Tusken Raiders to take down the Krayt Dragon, once and for all. The populace was outraged, and Mando stepped in to explain how much good will come out of this, and that while the Tusken Raiders are peaceful to them, peace towards them will save them from future conflicts. The systemic bias then swerved in favor of Vanth's proposal, and the villagers, the Raiders, the Mandalorian, and the Marshal were to all work together, in efforts to slay the Krayt Dragon.
The first plan of luring the monster out of its cage and detonating explosives his soft underbelly would brush against did not work. The second plan was so risky that the odds were much better. Mando gets swallowed by the Krayt Dragon on purpose, by luring the monster to a delicious Bantha with explosives attached to its back. He rigged Vanth's jetpack so he wouldn't be able to stop him, and he flew into the air. When he landed, the Krayt Dragon had finally been killed. He willingly forfeited his armor to the Mandalorian, wished him safe travels and hoped they would cross paths again. With the threat of the dragon gone, the town was renamed Freetown.
A New Threat[]
The Pyke Syndicate began their attempted takeover of Tatooine and sent some spice runners into territories belonging to Mos Pelgo. They were discovered by Vanth, who forbade them from this and warned them to go back. When they instead tried to shoot him, he got his gun out first and shot all but one dead. He sent the final one left to go back to his bosses and tell them to leave Tatooine and forced him to leave his treasure behind. Vanth and his new deputy were visited by Djarin. While Djarin bought Vanth a drink, he told him about the Pyke Syndicate's intentions to overthrow Boba Fett and take control of Tatooine and asked for reinforcements. Despite Vanth and the bartender Taanti initially refusing, Djarin managed to convince them that the threat of the Pyke Syndicates was too large to ignore. As Djarin left, Vanth instructed Taanti to gather citizens of Freetown and bring them to him to discuss the threat.
Confrontation with Cad Bane[]
Just as Taanti left, a figure emerged in the distance and began walking towards him. Vanth had Scott and Jo get everyone inside as a safety precaution. The figure revealed himself to be the greatest bounty hunter in the galaxy, Cad Bane, worker of the Pyke Syndicate. Bane claimed that the Pyke Syndicate were willing to pay any price Djarin was paying to make him avoid interfering. Scott came back out and announced Vanth would not be "bought". As Vanth asked Bane who he was, Bane instead reminded him that Boba Fett was once a cold-blooded murderer who worked for the Empire. Vanth stated that the Pyke Syndicate would not take control of Tatooine and make it violent and ordered Bane to go back and tell that to the Syndicate. Bane then took his blaster out as he told Vanth that he should not have given away his protection, Fett's armour. Immediately, in a swift showdown, Bane shot Scott to death and fatally shot Vanth unconscious. As Taanti and the people of Freetown crouched around him, Bane warned them to not interfere before leaving.
Being Healed[]
Despite Bane's warning, the people of Freetown aided Fett and Djarin in defeating the Syndicate and Fett had Vanth placed in his bacta tank in his palace and had a modifier save his life.
Abilities[]
As a protector of a town and as a marshal, he befittingly possesses strong marksmanship and competency with guns. He is also a beastmaster and speeder bike pilot. He became an even greater threat following his acquisition of Boba Fett's armor, killing the members of the Mining Collective easily. Formerly, he was a marksman, but not strong enough to win a shootout of multiple foes against one. This has changed, and he uses his prowess not to corrupt himself, but to protect his town. He also shows to be able to use his jetpack, which also contains a missile on its tip. This missile is able to easily destroy a speeder bike.
