“ | I understand what my dad meant when he told me I needed to be stronger, like you, Link... He wasn't talking about strength, like lifting stuff. He was talking about being brave... | „ |
~ Colin |
Colin is a supporting character in the game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. He is a kind and timid young boy who looks up to both Link and Ilia, but he is often the target for teasing by Talo and Malo. Unlike the other children, Colin is initially disinterested in being a warrior and swordsmanship since he finds it scary, and instead longs to learn to ride a horse. Because of the circumstances he was put into, he changes over the course of the story and becomes braver than he was.
Biography[]
Colin grew up in Ordan Village and his mother Uli is pregnant with his sister for the majority of the game. He is first seen walking back home with his father and he looks back at Link with a smile as he leaves. The next day, he watches over Epona and does not allow Link to ride since she needed a day off as he was given a day off from helping out Fado herd the goats. After Link demonstrates his slingshot and swordsmanship to the watching kids, Talo spots a monkey, who flees into the forest and he, Beth, and Malo chase after it into the Faron Woods. Given the situation that the kids are not allowed to go into the forest alone, Colin lets Link take Epona and tells him that he will let his father know what happened. After Talo and the monkey are saved from the monsters, Rusl tells Link that tomorrow, he will journey to Hyrule Castle to bring the gift he prepared for the upcoming coordination for Princess Zelda.
After Ilia scolds Link for pushing Epona too hard and takes her to the Ordona Spring to bathe her. Colin wanted to go follow Ilia, but Talo and Malo would not let him pass for telling his father and their own father, who was told of this, scolded them for wandering off and Talo soon asks Link to let them borrow the Wooden Sword so they can practice on the scarecrow, and Link gives it to him and he goes to practice his fighting prowess while Malo looks on. Colin thanks Link for it and wonders why wielding swords is fun and tell him to promise that he will teach him to ride a horse before heading off to meet with Ilia. When Link arrives, the gate is closed off and Ilia, still mad at Link for having her jump fences, refuses to let him in; Colin tells him to use the tunnel that leads him to the spring while he tells Ilia about what happened and that he had to use Epona to save Talo and the monkey. As Link emerges, it is revealed that she never knew of this and forgives Link and is about to allow him to have his horse back while telling him to return home safely, when King Bulblin and his henchmen attack. Ilia is shot down and everyone, including Link are knocked out and Epona flees. Both Ilia and Colin are taken and Link is left behind. Beth, Talo, and Malo suffer the same fate as they too are subsequently captured. Major events occur with the majority of the land of Hyrule becoming shrouded in an eerie twilight. Colin, Beth, Talo, and Malo are left at Kakariko Village while Ilia was taken to the Hidden Village.
As the Eldin Providence is shrouded in Twilight, Link becomes a blue-eyed wolf and everyone, excluding Link and Princess Zelda, become spirits who do not acknowledge Link's presence. Colin and the kids are sheltered in the sanctuary due to the monsters infesting the town, and Renado and Luda are revealed to be the people who looked after them since their arrival. Colin consoles a crying Beth, letting her know that Link will come for them. After Link rids the providence of the twilight and restored to normal, Colin and the children spy him and run over to him in joy and tell him of what happened since their abduction by the monsters. Renado then tells Link that due to recent events, their longtime friends, the Gorons, had become hostile. The kids then refuse to leave Kakariko Village, since they want to help the people who have suffered from so many hardships. After Link is unsuccessful at reaching Death Mountain, Renado suggests speaking with Mayor Bo, who is known for having defeated the Gorons. Before Link can leave, a frantic Epona appears, having shaken off the monsters from her back. With some effort, Link is able to calm and reunite with her.
Once Link learns the secret to defeating the Gorons with the use of Iron Boots to match them, King Bulblin and his minions attack Kakariko Village. Talo flees in terror while Beth stands transfixed in their path. Colin witnesses this and at first doesn't know what to do, then his he understood what his father meant and runs towards her and pushes her away, but is caught in the stampede and captured in the process. Link arrives and gives pursuit to them. After a horseback battle with Link able to topple King Bulblin off the Bridge of Eldin, Link brings the wounded Colin back to Kakariko Village. Colin tells Link that he now knows what his father meant about being like Link, that it was about being brave, and asks Link to help the Gorons before passing out and being taken to the inn to be cared for by Beth and Luda. After Link defeats Fyrus and changes him back to the patriarch, Darbus who had been corrupted by a Fused Shadow sought after by Midna, Colin recovers and tells Link that Ilia had been taken somewhere else and asks her to find her. Malo had opened Malo Mart, Talo and a Goron took charge of watching for monsters from the highest building and Beth spends time outside while Colin is given further treatment.
Once Link rids Lanayru Providence of Twilight and escorts, Telma, the amnesiac Ilia, and the ill Zora prince, Ralis, the kids tend to the Zora child. Colin asks Link if it was true that Ilia lost her memory and Renado confirms it and Colin vows to help Ralis in any way he can and Renado is endeared by Colin's maturity. Later on in the game, Colin witnesses Ilia recover her memory with the other children.
After Link defeats Ganondorf with Princess Zelda, Colin and the kids are being returned home and Colin now possesses a sword and shield on his back conveying how far he has come. As the children reunite with their parents, Colin and his father return to see that Uli had already given birth to his baby sister.
