Combat Carl never gives up! Combat Carl finds a way!
~ Combat Carl

Combat Carl is a supporting character in the Toy Story franchise. Another model of Combat Carl appears as the deuteragonist of Toy Story of Terror!

In Toy Story of ! and Toy Story 4, he was voiced by the late Carl Weathers, who also portrayed Combat Carl Jr in the same franchise, Apollo Creed in the Rocky film series, Greef Karga in the Star Wars franchise, Hampton Forbes in the TV adaptation of In the Heat of the Night, and Jericho Jackson/Action Jackson in the 1988 action film, Action Jackson. In Toy Story 5, after Weathers' death in 2024, he will be voiced by Ernie Hudson, who also played Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters franchise, William Fowler in Transformers: Prime, Lucius Fox in Batman: Bad Blood, and Atticus in Infinity Train.

History[]

Toy Story[]

A Combat Carl is seen in Sid's backyard when Woody and Buzz Lightyear are looking at him with a dynamite strapped on his back. Sid lights the dynamite for a few seconds, causing him to explode into bits. Two other mutant Carls are shown among the Mutant Toys that scare Sid later in the film. One has a nail through his head and has missing arms, and the other appears headless with a crippled leg.

Green Army Men chants[]

Another Combat Carl appeared in Andy's room and is seen marching with Sarge and his Green Army Men.

Toy Story of TERROR![]

Combat Carl reappears after 17 years of absence. However, he looks very different from his original counterpart in the first Toy Story film. This Combat Carl is one of the stolen toys held prisoner inside Ronald Tompkins' motel. Carl meets Jessie after she is stolen by Ron's pet iguana Mr. Jones and expressed his determination to escape with the other toys. His words help Jessie find the strength to save her friends and the other stolen toys when she started suffering from claustrophobia after being sealed inside a small box.

Toy Story 4[]

Three mini Combat Carl toys appear after Woody is reunited with his girlfriend, Bo Peep. One of them attempts to high five the others, but he doesn't receive one. However, he does eventually get one from Duke Caboom after the film's end credits.

Trivia[]

  • Combat Carl is the first Pixar character to die, before Coral and Hopper.
  • Due to Carl Weathers dying back in 2024, Ernie Hudson is set to replace Weathers as Combat Carl in Toy Story 5.
