Lord Commander Luis Dante, also known as the Lord of Angels, the Bringer of Sanguinius' Light, the Hero of the Red Scar, the Uniter of the Sanguinary Brotherhood, and the Living Embodiment of the Five Angelic Graces, is a major character in the grimdark science fantasy franchise Warhammer 40,000.
Commander Dante was the Space Marine Chapter Master of the Blood Angels Chapter and the regent ruler of the half of the Imperium of Man known as the Imperium Nihilus. Having lived for the better part of two millennia, Dante was the oldest known Space Marine. Many in the Imperium, including other Chapter Masters, looked up to Dante as an exemplar of wisdom, intelligence, and valor.
Appearance[]
After over a millennia and a half of life, Dante's physical appearance reflected his advanced age. Though his body remained in somewhat good condition from a functionality standpoint, his golden hair had turned to white and his skin had become stretched and marked with wrinkles.
Personality[]
After spending a millennia and a half fighting for the Imperium, Dante lost hope that humanity had any chance of prevailing against its myriad enemies. Though he continued to offer prayer to the Emperor and Sanguinius, his feelings towards the Imperium were riddled with doubts. Not even the Sanguinor, a figure of reverence to the Blood Angels, was able to assuage his fatalism. Despite his private lack of faith, Dante presented a front of enthusiasm and optimism to those that looked up to him. He also refused to yield, determined to fight to the end regardless of the outcome.
Though he had a mistrust of xenos races due to a lifetime of fighting against them, Dante did not truly hate aliens in the same way that most in the Imperium did. He recognized that most xenos species were like humans in that they were capable of both good and evil deeds, and as such preferred to judge them on a case by case basis. Unlike many commanders in the Imperium, he was willing to cooperate with xenos when the situation required it. Dante did harbor genuine hatred towards the Tyranids however, as he correctly judged them as having no redeeming qualities.
Powers & Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Space Marine Physiology
- Accelerated Healing: The fifth of the nineteen gene-seed organs implanted during the production of an Astartes was the "Larraman's Organ," also known as the "Healer." Shaped like a liver, the Larraman's Organ manufactured "Larraman Cells" once implanted in the chest cavity. Larraman Cells were a type of synthetic cell that fulfilled the function that an ordinary human's platelet did, that being to clot wounds to prevent blood loss. When a Space Marine such as Dante was wounded, their circulatory system released Larraman Cells that attached themselves to the body's white blood cells and closed the wound. Larraman Cells were capable of closing a wound in a matter of seconds, making it incredibly difficult for a Space Marine to die due to a loss of blood.
- Corrosive Saliva: The seventeenth of the nineteen gene-seed organs implanted during the production of an Astartes was the "Betcher's Gland," otherwise known as the "Poison Bite." The organ consisted of a pair of glands implanted into a would-be Space Marine's mouth, specifically inside the lower lip and salivary glands. When a Space Marine desired it, their Betcher's Gland transformed their saliva into a corrosive substance which they could then spit at an opponent. Depending on the enemy's durability, the corrosive spit of a Space Marine such as Dante could either distract, wound, or outright kill them. The implant was most commonly used, however, to aid in the digestion of unusually sturdy materials.
- Enhanced Respiration: Space Marines such as Dante had a number of implanted gene-seed organs that improved their respiratory systems in certain ways. The first of the nineteen gene-seed organs implanted during the production of an Astartes was the "Secondary Heart," also known as the "Maintainer." The Maintainer was a smaller, extra heart implanted near the original heart. Working in tandem with the original, it allowed for oxygen and nutrients to be pumped to muscles at an accelerated rate. It could also function as a temporary replacement if the original heart was destroyed. The fourth of the nineteen implanted gene-seed organs was the "Haemastamen," also known as the "Blood Maker." The Blood Maker was implanted into the circulatory system, altering the biochemical composition of a would-be Marine's blood so that their blood cells carried oxygen and nutrients more efficiently. The ninth of the nineteen implanted gene-seed organs was the "Multi-Lung," otherwise known as the "Imbiber." The Imbiber was an extra lung implanted into a would-be Marine's pulmonary and circulatory systems in the chest cavity. It enhanced the natural human ability to absorb oxygen from the environment, meaning Space Marines could survive and function in atmospheres that were not rich enough in oxygen for a regular human to survive in. It also allowed Astartes to absorb oxygen from water, meaning Space Marines could breath underwater as though they had gills.
- Enhanced Senses: Space Marines such as Dante had a number of implanted gene-seed organs that improved their natural senses in certain ways. The tenth of the nineteen gene-seed organs implanted during the production of an Astartes was the "Occulobe," otherwise known as the "Eye of Vengeance." The Occulobe was implanted at the base of a would-be Marine's brain, along the optic nerve. It provided hormonal and genetic stimuli that allowed an Astartes surgeon to make adjustments to a would-be Space Marine's eyes. Said adjustments granted Astartes with a greater sense of sight, increasing their visual acuity and allowing them to see perfectly in near-darkness. The eleventh of the nineteen implanted gene-seed organs was the "Lyman's Ear," also known as the "Sentinel." The Lyman's Ear was implanted as a replacement of one of the ears of a would-be Marine, granting them an enhanced sense of hearing that allowed them to pick up on frequencies that were indistinguishable to regular humans. It also improved the inner ear structure, making the Astartes immune to motion sickness and dizziness. The fifteenth of the nineteen implanted gene-seed organs was the "Neuroglottis," otherwise known as the "Devourer." The Devourer was implanted into the upper nasal passages of a would-be Astartes. It allowed a Marine to discern the toxicity or nutritional value of an item by touching or tasting it, as well as identify and track subtle odours with similar fidelity to a canine.
- Heat Resistance
- Longevity: As a result of the various bodily enhancements they received, Space Marines had far longer lifespans than ordinary humans. Though most fell in battle before they got the chance to do so, Astartes could live for over a millennia without perishing from old age. Dante was the oldest known Space Marine ever, having lived for the better part of two millennia without any form of medical aid. Though he struggled with emotional fatigue and appeared physically withered, his body still functioned well.
- Superhuman Durability
- Superhuman Strength
Abilities[]
- Master Artisanship: Like all Blood Angels, Dante received extensive instruction in the visual arts over a period of several years during his training as a neophyte. Artistic teachings were instilled in neophytes as part of their learning of the Five Angelic Graces, the tenants of temperance that all Blood Angels were expected to live by in order to supress the Flaw. Dante was noted to have an innate talent for art and, thanks to the teachings he received, became a skilled artisan with a mastery of drawing, painting, sculpting, and metalwork among other things.
- Master Fighter
Equipment[]
- Axe Mortalis
- Death Mask of Sanguinius
- Grenades: Like most Space Marines, Dante went into battle equipped with a small supply of grenades. He made use of the fairly small standard-issue frag (short for fragmentation) and krak grenades. Frag grenades were designed to be anti-personnel, producing a metal shrapnel explosion upon detonation with a blast radius of around three to five meters. Krak grenades, on the other hand, were designed to be anti-armor, producing a smaller yet more potent explosion.
- Jump Pack
- Perdition Pistol: Commander Dante's personal firearm of choice was the "Perdition Pistol," an Infernus Pistol created during the Dark Age of Technology at least five millennia before the formation of the Imperium of Man. Infernus Pistols were an incredibly rare type of melta weaponry. Melta weapons were a type of powerful short ranged weaponry that, upon a brief charging period, produced beams of superheated energy upon firing. Melta beams were powerful enough to burn through almost anything, though decreased in potency the further away the target was. The Perdition Pistol was a master-crafted Infernus Pistol, featuring an adamantium sight, an affective cooling system, and a reflexive grip that allowed for auto-stabilizing and reduced recoil. After Dante became a Primaris Space Marine, the Perdition Pistol received an upgrade in size to suit his increased frame. The weapon was formerly powered by a pack attached to Dante's suit, but after its upgrade the power source was incorporated into the pistol itself.
