I'm not giving up on him. I don't care if he's a jerk or a traitor or whatever. It's taken all this time to find him and I'm not giving up on my father.
~ Connor Hawke.
My name is Connor Hawke... the Green Arrow... and if you give me a job, it's as good as done. Because if I've learned anything from the mother who raised me... the ashram where I trained... and even the father who abandoned me... I'm here to save the day... no matter what falls out of the sky.
~ Prime Earth Connor Hawke.

Connor Hawke, also known as Green Arrow II, is a fictional character and superhero from DC comics.

The son of Oliver Queen, whom abandoned his son when he wasn't ready for fatherhood, Connor was raised at the Ashram monastery for several years before meeting his father. After Oliver's death when saving Metropolis, Hawke adopted his mantle to continue his legacy while trying to find his place in the world. Since his debut in the comics, he has been a member of the Justice League of America and Team Arrow.

He was created by Kelley Puckett and the late Jim Aparo, and first appeared in Green Arrow Vol. 2 #0 in October of 1994.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Connor Hawke is the son of Sandra Moonday Hawke and Oliver Queen, being conceived before the latter would experience a life changing event that turned him into the Green Arrow. When Sandra revealed her pregnancy to Oliver, he initially refused to believe so, but later gave her money so she could raise the child. During his childhood, Connor was bullied frequently by his schoolmates due to his mixed heritage, leading him to fight against them. Sandra noticed her son's growing anger issues, and told him the truth that his father was the renowned superhero, and later sent him to the Ashram monastery that Oliver went to. Connor was then raised by Master Jansen, whom taught the child the ways of Buddhism, archery and martial arts. While training, Hawke would read everything about his father, coming to idolize him and wanting to follow in his footsteps.

Connor would meet his father when the latter returned to the Ashram monastery following his breakup with Black Canary, and taught the former what he thought was a hero. The two worked together to stop an assassin, and left the monastery to travel while Hawke waited for the right moment to reveal to Oliver their relation. The truth was later revealed to Oliver by his colleague Hal Jordan, whom at the time was possessed by the entity Parallax. Oliver then confronted Connor about withholding the truth, and their relationship ended on bad terms.

Oliver's Successor[]

When Oliver sacrificed himself to save Metropolis, Connor believed that his father was possibly alive, as the superhero's body was never found. Following the event, Connor decided to take his father's mantle while trying to find his place in the world, and continued to travel with Master Jansen and Eddie. He quickly made friends with the Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, a reference to Oliver's friendship with Hal, but also made enemies with villains such as Lady Shiva. In addition, Hawke joined the Justice League after saving the team from their foe, the Key. Batman later had Connor be the fake traitor" of the team to stop Lex Luthor and the Injustice Gang, which ended with Hawkeye leaving the team soon after.

Once Oliver returned, the two repaired their relationship and moved to Star City, where Hawke met his adopted sister Mia Dearden. During the "Blackest Night" storyline, Connor was forced to fight against his undead father, who admitted his hatred for his son for reminding him of how old he was getting. Following the event, Connor's encounter with Oliver left him angry at his father, which contributed to his refusal to help Queen when he became a fugitive for killing Prometheus.

Prime Earth[]

On Prime Earth, Connor's backstory is similar, being the son of Sandra Hawke and Oliver Queen, and later becoming the second Green Arrow following his father's death. After being injured from a blue light, Connor was saved and recruited into the League of Shadows, but secretly planned on stopping them from awakening a demon. During his servitude, Hawke befriended Damian Wayne, but was forced to fight him during the League of Lazarus' tournament. However after the tournament, he became Damian's best friend, encouraging his romance with Flatline, and assisting him in ending Mother Soul's reign of terror. After the Lazarus Tournament ended, Damian and Connor teamed up to take down Music Meister to learn more about Mother Soul's demon. Upon returning to Lazarus Island, Hawke helped Damian set up his vision of using the island as a refuge for lost people who did not know who they were. He went with Damian to find Flatline in Japan, and shortly after the party on Lazarus Island, bade Damian farewell as he left to find his father. After reuniting with Black Canary and Red Arrow, who had abandoned the name Arsenal, Hawke joined forces to find a way to reunite with Oliver, who had stayed behind in Paradise's dream world, and were then rejoined by Lian Harper, who had never died in the first place as they had believed, now going by the name of Chesire Cat.

Trivia[]

  • He is one of the first DC heroes to be identified as asexual.
  • While initially he was left by his mother with monks, this later became harshly criticized for falling into stereotypes about how interracial children are treated in East Asia, and more recent comics have made it clear that his mother raised him during his whole childhood rather than leaving him at a monastery. While Connor does occasionally make a reference to the ashram, he also makes it clear that he went on his own initiative rather than being left there by his mother as an infant.
