~ Damar's vision of a post-war Cardassia |
Corat Damar was a Cardassian character on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Originally a villain, he would later become a hero for his role in the final days of the Dominion's war against the United Federation of Planets and its allies.
Damar was portrayed by Casey Briggs.
Biography[]
As a Glinn Damar was assigned to serve under Gul Dukat, and would soon become his right hand man as Dukat waged a one ship war against the Klingons. He would continue to follow Dukat as the latter brought the Cardassian Union into the Dominion, and would continue being Dukat's right hand as the Dominion went to war against the various Alpha Quadrant powers. During the Dominion occupation of DS9 he was promoted to Gul for his role in eliminating the minefield in front of the Bajoran wormhole.
When the Bajoran Prophets intervened and prevented the Dominion reinforcements from coming through the wormhole, Damar evacuated with the other Dominion forces, but not before killing Dukat's daughter Tora Ziyal, which would earn him the enmity of Kira Nerys and Elim Garak.
After the Dominion retreat from DS9, Damar found himself being increasingly sidelined by Weyoun and the Female Changeling. He took to drinking heavily. Soon the Breen had taken the place of the Cardassians as Dominion allies. Damar realized that the Cardassians had been conquered without the Dominion firing a shot, and after encouragement from his old friend Dukat, Damar decided to do something about the Dominion.
Gathering like minded members of the military, Damar formed a rebellion against the Dominion. Under his orders, parts of the Cardassian military attacked a key Dominion cloning installation. Colonel Kira, Odo, and Garak were sent to help Damar with his resistance against the Dominion. When Damar learned about the deaths of his wife and children at the hands of the Dominion he asked what sort of people killed innocents, leading Kira to point out his hypocrisy. She immediately regretted her words to Damar, but Garek counseled her that following the war men like Damar would have to face some hard truths in order to lead the Cardassian state in the post-war era.
Damar helped Kira and Odo steal a Breen energy dampening weapon for the Federation to study. The Federation was able to develop a countermeasure to the weapon in short order.

~ Damar's final words |
Due to his efforts, the Cardassian people turned against the Dominion. Damar died during the final assault on Dominion Headquarters. Thanks to Damar's sacrifice Kira and Garak were able to capture the Female Changeling a few minutes later. When Odo healed her she finally agreed to stand down.
After the war Damar was remembered as a hero to the Cardassian people, and one of their best leaders. By the mid 2380s it was high praise for a Cardassian to be compared to Damar.
