~ Count cackles |
Count von Count, also known as The Count (born October 9, 1492), is a Muppet vampire from Sesame Street. Despite being a vampire, he likes to count various objects that are present to him. Afterwards, he give his signature laugh: "Ah-ah-ah-ah." He is a recurring character from Season 4 to Season 14, and one of the main characters from Season 15 to present.
The Count has a compulsive love of counting (arithmomania); he will count anything and everything, regardless of size, amount, or how much annoyance he causes others around him. In one song he stated that he sometimes even counts himself. When he finishes counting, The Count laughs and announces his total (which sometimes appears on screen). This finale is usually accompanied by a crash of thunder and a flash of lightning, even on sunny days. (According to The Sesame Street Bedtime Storybook, the Count has a personal cloud that hovers over his head and provides the thunder and lightning.)
Many of the Count's songs, including "Counting Is Wonderful" and "The Batty Bat," are in the style of Roma music.
The Count lives in an old, cobweb-infested castle that he shares with many bats. Sometimes he counts them. Some of the pet bats are named, including Grisha, Misha, Sasha, and Tattiana. He also has a cat, Fatatita, and an octopus named Octavia. He also plays a large pipe organ, and in some illustrations he is seen playing the violin. In recent years, the Count has appeared on each episode to announce the Number of the Day, playing notes on his organ to count up to the featured number.
The Count's most recent girlfriend, Countess von Backwards, is known for counting backwards. He had previously been linked to Countess Dahling von Dahling and shared a brief romantic tryst with Lady Two. His brother and mother have appeared on the show, and he also has an Uncle Uno.
Nevertheless, the Count resembles Bela Lugosi's portrayal of Dracula in voice (speaking in an Eastern European accent and pronouncing his Vs as Ws), appearance, and sometimes mannerisms. For example, in early sketches, the Count waves his hands to exercise hypnotic power over other Muppets and holds his cape over the lower part of his face while moving. In addition, an early skit revealed that the Count shows no reflection in a mirror. Unlike vampires as traditionally depicted in legend and motion pictures, however, the Count often relaxes in the sunlight (as seen in "Counting Vacation" and "Coconut Counting Man," among others).
In Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird, The Count bids Big Bird goodbye to live with the Dodos by Miss Finch (who thinks one of his kinds) and not to forget to count. Later after Big Bird left the Dodos to return back to Sesame Street, The Count was at his home watching the news of Big Bird's journey back to Sesame Street. He was soon assign on his Countmobile by Bob to find Big Bird before Miss Finch does and it is unknown where he spent for the night. In Toadstool, he finally finds Big Bird, due to a parade going on he was unable to get to him. Unknown to The Count, he was soon captured by Sam and Sid Sleaze who runs a funfair outside Toadstool, while fueling at a gas station with the others, they are been informed by Bob (who was been informed by 2 two kids of what the Sleaze Brothers had done to Big Bird) that Big Bird is in the funfair of the Sleaze Brothers in Toadstool. The next day they find him and ready to get him out of the cage, but The Sleaze Brothers wake up and escapes with Big Bird in tow to prevent them from bringing Big Bird back to Sesame Street, but Gordon and Olivia give chase on the Volkswagen and rescues him. After Big Bird is finally back to Sesame Street and The Sleaze Brothers arrested, The Count was also seen listening Big Bird's journey back home until Miss Finch (who trailed him and the others from Toadstool) appears admitting the Dodos are not perfect for him, but has already found another bird family, which The Count objects this and finally convinces Miss Finch that Sesame Street is his home and proudly leaves.
He was voiced by the late Jerry Nelson and currently by Matt Vogel in English, and by Tōru Ōkawa and Atsushi Imaruoka.
