Couldn't get a bead on Avi
~ Shade regrets missing the Aviator as the latter makes his getaway.

The Countershade is one of the Mighty Numbers from Mighty No. 9, bearing the serial number 8 and the nickname Shade. He was based on a cowboy. Shade wields the Reflect Shoot for his Special Weapon; Beck gets this weapon from him by defeating him in the White House, whose mid-boss and main boss Shade serves as.

Character[]

Personality[]

Shade is a ruthless hunter and trapper, He values his independence and that of all other robots, which drives him to set all the robots free upon becoming the President of the country. The virus causes him to show disdain for humans, but after his cleansing, Shade shows some gratitude to Beck for cleansing his spirit and some more mercy to humans.

Physical Appearance[]

Shade is a humanoid robot. He has a hawkeye dish on his head. His body is mostly blue, but his left leg is red. His left hand carries a rifle that allows him to use his Reflect Shoot; his right one was severed not too far from his shoulder. He does not wish to get his right arm replaced, fearing it makes things too easy in his favour.

Story[]

Shade was one of the eight Mighty Numbers to be infected with the virus. While brainwashed by it, he decided to lead a revolt to free all robots from the humans' control. To that end, Shade took over the Capitol Building, turning the place into his own fortress. Beck and Dyna then stormed the place to stop Shade and save him. Eventually, Beck cornered Shade, forcing the latter to retreat to "his new office". Beck then made his way to Shade's new office, where the two began their duel.

After his defeat, Shade was cleansed, thanking Beck for saving his soul. He then went on to help Beck when the latter stormed a Radio Tower that the Aviator brought under his control. When Avi tried to down beck, Shade shot down the mooks with his Reflect Shot, but the Aviator escaped, much to Shade's disgust.

After Beck freed the rest of the Mighty Numbers, the Mighty Numbers stormed the Robot Factory, which had been infected. When the Cryosphere made a lame pun, Shade insisted that she continue fighting rather than tell puns.

Trivia[]

  • The Countershade could be an Expy of Search Man from Mega Man 8 as he wields a gun and puts stealth to use. His ability to create copies of himself could be based on Geminī Man from Mega Man 3.
  • It is possible to cheat Shade by going into a room that houses him, then leave, causing Shade to leave early.
  • Shade is the only Mighty Number to be a midboss. However, he is still his own stage's main boss.
  • The Electric Seed could be considered to do a number on him as cloaking devices might lose their power upon being zapped.
  • A female Countershade was planned to be put within the game, but she was scrapped.
