~ Cranky Kong to Mario |
Cranky Kong is a supporting character in in Illumination's thirteenth feature film The Super Mario Bros. Movie. He is the ruler of the Jungle Kingdom and the father of Donkey Kong.
He is voiced by Fred Armisen; who also played Deborahbot 5000 in The Mitchells vs. the Machines and KVN in Final Space.
Personality[]
Like his name implies, Cranky Kong is shown to be a rather rude Kong, as he flat out refuses to make an alliance with Princess Peach after her proposal to work together to stop Bowser despite it being clear that he would destroy all of their kingdoms if no action was taken. He also took the time to gloat to her whenever something unfortunate happened to Mario during his fight with his son, Donkey Kong. Cranky Kong is sophisticated as well, as he was annoyed by his son's childish need to show off to the crowd during said fight and demanded that everyone calms down soon after. Like Mario's dad, Cranky Kong thinks of Donkey Kong as a joke.
Despite this, Cranky Kong is a noble ruler who cares for his people, as his reason for declining Princess Peach's offer was out of paranoia that something bad would happen to the Kongs. He also plays fair at the very least, putting various ? Blocks around the arena in order for Mario to have a fair shot against Donkey Kong (although this was partially done for his own amusement, saying that he wanted the fight to "last more than 5 seconds"). Additionally, while he is upset when Mario defeats Donkey Kong, he gives a defeated smile and upholds his end of the bargain by giving Princess Peach access to the Kong army.
Although he doesn't always see eye to eye with his son because of his showboating, Cranky Kong truly loves Donkey Kong and obviously doesn't want anything bad to happen to him. This is demonstrated when the Koopa General strikes down on and seemingly kills him and Mario, he is devastated by the sight. When it's revealed that the two are still alive and save him and hundreds of other prisoners from being burned alive in lava at Bowser's wedding, Cranky Kong is relieved and congratulates him by allowing him to do his peck dance. When Donkey Kong declines (but says he will later) as there were more pressing issues at the moment, he warmly smiles at him, happy and proud by his newfound maturity.
Appearance[]
Cranky Kong's physical appearance resembles the video game version of himself, but in a different style of 3D animation and he weariness emperor-like attire.
History[]
Past[]
Cranky Kong's past is mostly unknown. What is known is that he became king of the Jungle Kingdom and met an unknown mate (possibly Wrinkly Kong), and together they had a child, Donkey Kong.
Present[]
Cranky first appears when Mario, Princess Peach, and Toad need assistance from the Kong Army in order to defeat Bowser. Once he denies the assistance, Cranky notices Mario standing up to him, forcing him to challenge Mario into a fight with his son Donkey Kong.
After an intense battle with Mario and Donkey Kong, Mario wins using the assistance of a Super Bell. Due to this, Cranky allows the Kong Army to help defeat Bowser and gives everyone karts.
On Rainbow Road, he, as well as the rest of the Kong Army, is captured by Bowser's troops, who infiltrated the road, as Mario and Donkey Kong fall off and Peach and Toad run to Mushroom Kingdom.
While captured, they meet Luigi, Penguin King, and a suicidal Luma.
The prisoners are sent to lava in Bowser's wedding with Peach (who was forced in), yet they are saved by Donkey Kong, who pulled the pulley upwards. Once they get onto the ground, Cranky thanks his son and leaves.
