Jack Ryder, known by his alias the Creeper, is a supporting character of Batman: The Animated Series, debuting in the episode Beware the Creeper! He was formerly a news anchorman before his confrontation with The Joker, and later became a superhero and member of the Justice League.
He was voiced by Jeff Bennett, who's also voiced the titular character in Johnny Bravo, Brooklyn in Gargoyles and Petrie in The Land Before Time franchise.
Jack Ryder is a normal man with a light skin complexion with a short black hair.
His transformation into the Creeper was caused by a mixture of chemicals and the Joker's laughing gas, that gave him superhuman abilities. It also made his skin to become yellow, his hair becomes green, and he later made himself a yellow and red costume with green trunks and a fur-like boa.
Personality[]
Jack Ryder is a university educated investigative journalist with a great sense of deductive reasoning.
The Creeper's personality is quite the opposite of Jack Ryder. Although crazy and created by the same chemicals as the Joker, the Creeper was essentially moral and heroic at heart, and later joined the extended Justice League to protect the world from evil.
Story[]
Reporter Jack Ryder presents an account of the Joker's origin story, broadcast live from the very spot where he fell into a vat of chemicals seven years earlier. However, the Clown Prince of Crime himself drops in and decides to present his own version of the events, dosing Ryder and his crew with laughing gas and then tossing Ryder into a chemical vat in a macabre re-enactment. Batman and Robin arrive, having seen the Joker's intrusion on live TV. The resulting battle ends with the chemical plant in flames as the Joker and his henchmen flee. The heroes attempt to save Ryder, but find only his burning and dissolving coat.
However, Ryder is alive, if not precisely well. The combination of laughing gas and strange chemicals has transformed him into a powerful, nimble, yellow-skinned wacky man who would soon be known as the Creeper. He barges into a thrift shop looking for a suitable outfit for his new persona, and then goes looking for the Joker.
Alfred calls Batman with the news of the thrift shop incident, noting that the odd intruder paid for his purchases with Ryder's credit card. This puts Batman and Robin on the Creeper's trail. They catch up to him as he interrogates the Joker's henchmen and hits on Harley Quinn. However, the Creeper's strength, speed, and unpredictability prove to be too much for the heroes, and he escapes.
The story ends in a crescendo of chaos, with the Creeper chasing the Joker and Harley and Batman and Robin chasing everybody else. Finally, Batman captures the Joker (who begs him to save him from the "lunatic" Creeper) and sedates the Creeper.
In the final scene, Batman has restored Jack Ryder to his normal self with an antidote skin patch. He tells Ryder that the incident will blow over, since nobody else knows the Creeper's identity, and cautions him to keep the patch in place until he returns with a fresh antidote supply. After Batman leaves, Ryder ponders the situation...and the sound of tearing tape is followed by the Creeper's maniacal laugh.
Powers & Abilities[]
Before being mutated and transformed into the Creeper, Jack Ryder was a normal man who was devoted to his work as news anchorman and his successful career at the media world, without any special ability.
After being mutated, the Creeper had superhuman strength, agility, senses and healing. He also developed an unusually high sense of his surroundings, being able to sense incoming enemies from behind and retaliate without turning around, including with a man like Batman, who was highly adept at stealth. He was also very resilient, as seen when Harley dropped a statue on him and the Joker later tried to exterminate him with a dose of nitroglycerin, causing little to no effect, causing him to acquire the strange ability to cheat death.
Weaknesses[]
Creeper seems to be incapable of thinking logically, since when he attempted to do this, it gave him a headache.

Trivia[]
During Creeper's introduction episode, the Joker accused him of "stealing his act". Amusingly enough, Creeper's voice actor, Jeff Bennett, would later voice Joker in Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
