Cube is the main protagonist of the Distant Future chapter "The Mechanical Heart" in Live A Live. He is a support unit robot created by Yoshiyuki Kato to assist him and the other crew members of the Cogito Ergo Sum spaceship in its journey. During this time, he grows to develop a pleasant personality and a very human attitude, going to great lengths to protect the crew from danger.

Appearance[]

Cube is a small white-colored unit, with his most prominent aspect being his spherical shape which is ironically alluded to with his name, "Cube", as a small joke. He has three slots on his front made to give the impression of a permanently blank face akin to that of an ancient statue, though he is perfectly capable of expressing emotion through subtle movements.

Cube has a red baseball that he wears backwards and a pair of glasses over his front side, held up by a pair of ear-like feathered wings attached to his sides. These details are said to make him further resemble his creator, Kato. He has a pair of green roller skaters for feet, allowing him to move freely.

History[]

The Mechanical Heart[]

During the return trip to Earth, the newly activated Cube greets his creator and picks a name for himself, before waking the crew out of stasis, along with a grumpy-looking passenger.

The Dominion of Hate[]

When brought to the Middle Ages' Earth against his will, he finds himself on the balcony of Lucrece's castle, or rather the Seat of the Betrayers.

If not chosen as protagonist, he'll lose his battery. The player has to find it in the snow-covered mountain to recruit him. Filled with gratitude despite lacking the words, he joins the party in exploring the land, eventually fighting the Lord of Dark.

After Odio's defeat in the true ending, if chosen as protagonist, Cube manages to comfort a dying Oersted to the best he can muster with a few beeps and a flower (the latter only appears in the Remake.)

During the epilogue, he is reunited with Kato and Darthe, the former giving him a hug.

Bad Endings[]

If he's the one to execute Oersted after Purity of Odio's defeat, he can only let out a sad beep. Since Oersted was killed too early, the Lord of Dark's hatred is free to continue the cycle, and Cube along with the other six heroes are presumably trapped in Lucrece.

If Oersted is the protagonist of the Dominion of Hate, his hatred is enough to upgrade OD-10's matrix to scrap Cube and doom the rest of the humans onboard, perhaps even the rest of the Earth.
