Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility."

“ | For twenty years, I dreamed about my father: a man to look up to, a hero that sacrificed everything for the good of his family. It was your family you sacrificed! You threw us away so you could go knock around the galaxy! | „ |
~ Cyclops to his father. |
“ | I said, because you're normal. You're ungrateful. We fight, risk our lives for you. Evil mutants, robots, crazy aliens. I gave him up. I gave him up because you can't say thank you. Because I have to stomach your questions and prove that I'm a person. I lie because the truth is we're nothing like you. Thank God, because it's the only reason you people are still alive. | „ |

Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, is one of the main protagonists of 1992-97 animated superhero series X-Men: The Animated Series and its 2024 sequel series X-Men '97, as well as a guest character in Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
He is the field leader of the X-Men as well as its resident Boy Scout and one of Professor Xavier's first students. His ruby quartz visor keeps his otherwise uncontrollable eye beams in check. He is also the husband of Jean Grey, and the father of Cable.
He is voiced by late Norm Spencer in the original series, and by Ray Chase in X-Men '97.
History[]
Early Life[]
The Summers family were involved in a plane accident. Scott and his brother jumped with parachutes to safety but their parents were left aboard. The two orphans were put into an orphanage.
Charles Xavier recruited Scott into his X-Men along with Storm, Jean Grey, Morph, Beast, and Rogue. Wolverine eventually joined the team, and many thought he could not stay but he did. Scott would be second in command and lead the team while out in the field.
He fell in love with Jean Grey but so did Wolverine. Jean decided on Scott but still had feelings for Wolverine. Wolverine respected their love despite his own feelings.
X-Men: The Animated Series[]
Young mutant Jubilee was attacked by several Sentinels, of which followed her through a mall. As she ran outside, Cyclops came to her aid. Jubilee questioned who he was, before Cyclops formally introduced himself and told her to take cover as he shot down the Sentinel chasing her. At the Xavier Mansion, Jubilee tried to escape after being taken back for recovery. Cyclops was deployed by Xavier to keep her on the premises. Cyclops was amongst the X-Men as Xavier made plans for Storm's fellow members to be deployed alongside her. As Xavier emerged from the room, Cyclops quickly followed after him. Cyclops expressed his confusion and distaste at the X-Men being involved in any type of negative human interaction before Xavier left him. Soon after, Wolverine confronted him about his disdain for the mission, something that visually irritated Cyclops. Wolverine continued to pressure him into battle by inferring that he would face him anytime.
As the two stood against each other, Jean Grey ran to their position. She told Cyclops that she had checked Jubilee's room and discovered she had wandered off. Deciding to make matters into his own hand, Wolverine concluded he was going after her, something Cyclops advised against doing. Cyclops continued by stating the two and the other X-Men had a job to do. Much to his discharging, he was given a rejection by Wolverine, who then proceeded to push Gambit into a wall. As Gambit prepared to strike back at his oppressor, Cyclops urged him to let Wolverine go off on his own, which Gambit abided by. With Wolverine's absence, he continued alongside the X-Men that night and listened to their stories of first discovering their powers. As Rogue expressed her distaste in her father discovering her powers, Cyclops concluded that every member of the group had to face what she went through at some point.
Cyclops remained outside with Gambit and Rogue as the others descended into the building. After the latter commented on Cyclops' nervousness, he explained his desire to know what was happening inside. As several military vehicles passed by the three without detecting their presence, Cyclops concluded the group had trouble. Cyclops led Gambit and Rogue against the vehicles, with the rules of no humans being harmed and to watch out for themselves as well. As he and the two continued to fight, Cyclops deduced the battle's true difficulty and called in Storm to aid them from inside the base. However, the group was forced to leave Morph and Beast behind. As they arrived at the Xavier Mansion, Cyclops claimed to Wolverine he understood his frustrations before being assaulted by the latter with a blow to the stomach.
As Cyclops prepared to go off on Wolverine, the two's argument was settled by Jean Grey. She revealed to Wolverine that while Beast had indeed survived, Morph had not. Cyclops comforted Jean as Wolverine walked off. Cyclops came to Jean's side once more after Wolverine ripped apart the top of his car. Cyclops went to confront Wolverine, who had drove to a bar. As he entered, he was subject to harassment at the hands of a member of the bar. Unfortunately, his powers were revealed after the man removed his glasses, causing his powers to destroy the pool table and for others to witness.
As he and Wolverine walked outside, Wolverine told him to save his breath if he were only there to apologize for running out on Beast. Cyclops insisted he wouldn't apologize for a command decision and asked him if he would like to locate the Sentinel home-base. Cyclops had a conversation with Jubilee's parents later that night. He reasoned to the two that many feared what they couldn't understand and was kicked out shortly after making the statement. Outside, he was attacked by a Sentinel and defeated it. He later joined the X-Men to save Jubilee after she was kidnapped by the Sentinels.
X-Men '97[]
In the months following Xavier's disappearance, mutantkind and humanity found a tentative peace, as the X-Men received United Nations sanction. Scott took over leadership of the X-Men alongside Jean. Jean soon became pregnant, and began wishing that the pair would retire from the X-Men to raise their child.
To Scott and the X-Men's shock, they learned that Professor X had amended his will before his departure to leave the mansion and leadership of his X-Men to his erstwhile foe Magneto, in the hopes that Magneto would be inspired to walk Xavier's path of co-existance. Scott struggled with Magneto's seizure of the X-Men, upset that the Professor had seemingly not trusted him to lead the X-Men.
Soon his child was born, and Scott also began to consider leaving the X-Men. However, matters were complicated when another Jean suddenly turned up at their door. After running tests, Beast soon learned that the Jean who had been amongst them, and who had given birth to Scott's child, was a clone, created by Mr. Sinister. As Scott was plagued by confusion, Sinister seized control of the clone and forced her to deliver their child to him. Sinister infected the child with a strain of the Techno-Organic Virus, which threatened to consume him.
With the clone now back in control of herself, they made the decision to send the baby Nathan to the future with Bishop, where his condition could be treated. Jean's clone, taking the name Madelyne Pryor decided to leave the X-Men to find herself. The loss of his son weighed heavily on Scott, as did the strain the clone affair had caused on his marriage. With Jean's memories in tatters and with her struggling to find herself, Scott maintained his telepathic rapport with Madelyne. Matters were made worse when the newly founded mutant nation of Genosha was destroyed in a Sentinel attack, causing the death of X-Man Gambit, as well as the death of Madelyne.
While investigating who was behind the attack, the X-Men learned that Sinister had forced Bolivar Trask to hand over his genetic key to the Sentinels and bolstered his designs on behalf of a new patron; Bastion. When Trask was revealed to have been turned into a Prime Sentinel and set to target the X-Men, they were narrowly rescued by Cable.
Her telepathy allowed Jean to unearth Cable's true identity; he was in fact Scott and Madelyne's son, grown up in the future and now returned to the past to help them avenge Genosha. Despite Scott's attempts to connect with his son, Cable showed no interest in Scott and rejected Jean outright. Following Cable's leads, Scott, Jean and Cable found Bastion's childhood home and learned that he was a human-Sentinel hybrid who planned to upgrade mankind into machines and enslave mutantkind. His Prime Sentinels were narrowly stopped from killing the X-Men when Magneto unleashed a global EMP, disrupting technology world-wide and causing great damage to the Earth's magnetic field.
With Magneto resolved to allow Earth to die as vengeance for Genosha, the X-Men divided into two teams to fight both him and Bastion. Xavier returned from Shi'ar space after learning of Genosha's destruction and Gambit's death. He and Scott had a heated reunion, as Scott resented Xavier for handing the X-Men to Magneto, while Xavier responded that he wished to free Scott and Jean from their loyalty to his dream. Still angry, Scott nevertheless put their differences aside. Scott led Xavier, Wolverine, Morph, Jubilee and new X-Man Nightcrawler into an assault on Asteroid M, where they faced Magneto, who had been joined by Rogue and young X-Man Sunspot.
While the X-Men gained the upper hand, disabling Magneto's EMP would restore the Prime Sentinels and imperil the X-Men fighting Bastion. Cyclops saved Magneto after receiving a telepathic distress call from Jean and realizing that her team had not yet defeated Bastion.
Recovering, Magneto disabled his opponents and captured Xavier, using his helmet to disable Xavier's powers. As Magneto prepared to execute him for his perceived trechery to their race, Wolverine managed to recover in time to stab Magneto in the back. Wounded but not down, Magneto punished Wolverine by tearing the Adamantium from his bones. In the aftermath, Xavier managed to seize control of Magneto's mind and undo the damage to the Earth, but as a result, both were rendered comatose.
The other X-Men broke Bastion's connection to his Prime Sentinels and defeated Sinister, but failed to defeat Bastion, who instead took the Techno-Organic Virus from Cable to bolster his power, and rushed to Asteroid M in order to bring it crashing down into Earth. The X-Men fought tooth and nail to stop him, with the other X-Men soon arriving to reinforce them. Cyclops stopped the battle however, to attempt to reason with Bastion. Their conversation was cut short when human governments fired missiles onto Asteroid M, bringing it plummetting down. Rather than accept the X-Men's help, Bastion chose to toss himself into the asteroid's disintegrating gravity engine.
The X-Men resolved to sacrifice themselves to stop the asteroid from crashing. Jean projected her and Scott into Cable's mind, so that they could say a final goodbye to their son. With Magneto awakening just in time, the X-Men managed to save the world from the crashing asteroid, before suddenly disappearing, scattered across time.
Six months after his disappearance he was listed as MISSING PRESUMED DEAD by Forge.
Powers & Abilities[]
Cyclops stores solar energy for discharge as powerful force beams fire from his eyes. However, he needs special material to contain his beams. This is why he is always wearing his visor or special ruby lensed glasses, which gives him the name Cyclops. The true strength of his powers have been measured, but not fully explained. His powers proved ineffective against the likes of Blob, but were shown to cause particular damage to Wolverine.
Personality[]
Cyclops takes his position on the X-Men very seriously, which sometimes gets him into a few conflicts with Wolverine who doesn't always obey his orders. He tends to be stoic, a bit uptight, and believes in doing things by the book, such as when he questions Professor Xavier about breaking into the Mutant Control Registration office to destroy the mutant files. He cares about his teammates greatly and has often regretted the decision he made when he left Beast and Morph behind during the Sentinel attack, which made him vow never to leave anyone behind again. There are also times when he can admit when he has made a mistake and tries to make things right for the team. Cyclops has an aura of authority and compassion and is very charismatic, extremely skilled at making decisions under pressure.
Additionally, he seems to view Beast as a brother-figure and seems to love Jubilee, Rogue and Storm like sisters, hinting that he regards all the X-Men as family. His compassionate, sympathetic side is displayed when he goes back to the orphanage he once lived in and comforts a teen boy named Rusty, who is struggling with his pyrokinesis. He believes Rusty when the boy tells him that the man fostering him is dangerous, relating to him in the fact that he also has a hard time controlling his powers and that when he was growing up, he was unwanted by people who turned him away due to his mutation.
