DJ Octavio is the main antagonist of the Splatoon franchise, serving as the main antagonist and final boss of Splatoon and Splatoon 2's single-player campaign, and the opening antagonist and first boss of Splatoon 3's Return of the Mammalians campaign.
He is the hammy yet militaristic leader of the Octarians and the archenemy of the New Squidbeak Splatoon and their leader, Cap'n Cuttlefish, who was friends with Octavio prior to the rising tides cause Inklings and Octolings to divide in the Great Turf War.
Despite serving as a villain for the majority of the series, he plays a heroic role during the final boss of Splatoon 3's Return of the Mammalians mode, where he saves New Agent 3 and their Smallfry after they are knocked into space by Mr. Grizz, and provides them usage of an ink vacuum that is on his mech in order to vacuum up the balls of fuzzy ooze on Mr. Grizz's body, all the while, with help from the Squid Sisters and Deep Cut, broadcasting a new remix of the Calamari Inkantation that has a mystical energy that allows Smallfry to transform into Hugefry in order to battle and distract Grizz.
Biography[]
Past[]
Octavio has served as the ruler of the Octarians for over 100 years, even before the events of the Great Turf, back when Inklings and Octolings both lived peacefully with one another, and used to be friends with Craig Cuttlefish. However, their friendship was broken due to the rising tides dividing Inklings and Octolings, and starting the Great Turf War. During said war, Octavio was brutally injured, to the point he could no longer transform into his humanoid form. Octavio was eventually defeated by his former ally Cuttlefish at the siege of Arowana Castle, with the Inklings eventually defeating the Octarians and winning the war. After the war, Octavio and the Octarians moved into some underground dome, where they were scarce of power and energy. Due to this, 100 years after the events of the Great Turf War, Octavio ordered the kidnapping of the Inklings' Great Zapfish, prompting the events of the first Splatoon.
Splatoon[]
After the disappearance of the Great Zapfish and numerous other Zapfishes, Cap'n Cuttlefish recruits a new member to his New Squidbeak Splatoon, a young Inkling who goes under the alias of Agent 3. After said inkling defeats two of Octavio's Octoweapons, Octavio manages to kidnap Cuttlefish, causing the Squid Sisters under the alias of Agent 1 and 2 to guide Agent 3 in his place. When Agent 3 confronts Octavio, he reveals to them that he stole the Great Zapfish, before absorbing it into his machine. After a while of the two fighting, the Squid Sisters manage to hack into Octavio's radio station and play the Calamari Inkantation, which distracts Octavio and makes it easier for Agent 3 to defeat him, and restore the Great Zapfish, as well as freeing Cap'n Cuttlefish. After this, Octavio can be seen trapped in a snowglobe next to Cuttlefish's shack for his misdeeds.
Splatoon 2[]
The Squid Sisters playing the Calamari Inkantation during Agent 3's fight with Octavio turnerd out to be a significant, as it inspired many of Octolings under Octavio's rule to rebel against their authoritarian society and make anew up in the surface, including Marina Ida and Agent 8. Several months after the Squid Sisters' final Splatfest, which pitted them against each other, Cuttlefish and Agent 3 went on a research trip. This allowed Octavio to break free his snowglobe and returned to his Octarian army, and even managed to kidnap not only the Great Zapfish once again but also Callie, whom he brainwashed into serving his plans using a pair of mind-controlling sunglasses. During the final boss of Hero Mode, Marie and the New Squidbeak Splatoon's newest recruit Agent 4 find Octavio and the brainwashed Callie in what appears to be an Octarian concert. After Marie frees Callie from her brainwashing, the two regroup and sing the Spicy Calamari Inkantation, a new remix of the original Inkantation, once again distracting the DJ. Agent 4 receices a modified version of the Rainmaker from Sheldon as they fight and eventually defeat Octavio and recpver the Great Zapfish. Just like in the first game, after Octavio's defeat, he can be found once more in his snowglobe, albeit the snowglobe is slightly more worse for wear as there are visible cracks that are lazily covered up by tape.
Splatoon 3[]
DJ Octavio returns as an antagonist in the single-player campaign "Return of the Mammalians", albeit as the first boss this time around instead of the last. He ambushes the new agent 3 and Craig Cuttlefish and fights the former under the assumption the New Squidbeak Splatoon is responsible for all of his Octarian troops disappearing. When defeated once more, he tells Cuttlefish he wasn't the one who stole the Great Zapfish this time, before him, Cuttlefish, the New Agent 3 and their Smallfry companion and fall below the Crater after presumably falling into a trap set up by Deep Cut.
Octavio is not heard from again until the endgame, where New Agent 3 is fighting Mr. Grizz and attempting to stop him from spreading his Fuzzy Ooze all over the planet. After Grizz knocks the cephalopod agent off his rocket, DJ Octavio swoops in while in his mech and saves the newest New Squidbeak Splatoon recruit and their Smallfry buddy. He bashes Mr. Grizz for attempting to mess with Earth, with him calling it "OUR turf" and teams up with the Squid Sisters and Deep Cut to broadcast another remix of the Calamari Inkantation, called the Calamari Inkantation 3Mix, broadcasting it in space so that its magical, marine-life-focused energy can allow Smallfry to transform into Hugefry so that it can battle Mr. Grizz and distract him while the New Agent 3 uses the ink vacuum that is on Octavio's machine to suck up the ooze-covered furballs on Grizz's body and then later fire the ooze back at the bear, saving the world in the process, as Octavio, New Agent 3 and Hugefry, who transforms back into Smallfry, returns back to Earth. It is unknown what happens to Octavio afterwards as he cannot be seen again after this, with the only mention of him coming from Cuttlefish, who states that he isn't so bad after all and calls him a rascal, possibly implying they rekindled their past friendship to some extent.
This is indicated during the Grand Festival, the Final Fest for Splatoon 3, as Octavio can be seen alongside Cuttlefish running a merchandise booth at the venue next to ones selling merch of the Squid Sisters, Off the Hook, and Deep Cut, occasionally spinning his wasabi to the beats of the idols as they perform on the nearby Urchin Stage, but only during the first 48 hours of the event, and the 2 hours afterwards during the afterparty.
Personality[]
DJ Octavio is known for being very loud, hammy and boastful, always shouting out his lines, even during his team-up with the New Squidbeak Splatoon against Mr. Grizz. He is shown to be determined, seen when despite being defeated multiple times, he still gets up and doesn't let his defeat affect him.
In the final boss of "Return of the Mammalians" it is shown he can put aside his long-standing grudge towards the Inklings aside as he teams up the New Squidbeak Splatoon to save Earth from being covered in Fuzzy Ooze. It is currently unclear whether this alliance was merely pragmatic on his part or that he genuinely help save all sea life on Earth out of altruism. However, given that he calls Earth "OUR turf" while threatening Mr. Grizz, the fact he called the Calamari Inkantation a "heavenly melody" despite previously showing disdain for the song, and that he possibly befriended Cuttlefish again shows the latter to be more likely.
