Daddy Topps, (also known as Cera's Dad in later films, Topsy, as he is called by Tria and Mr. Threehorn as he is called by the other characters in the Great Valley) is a character in the Land Before Time films and television series. He is voiced by Burke Byrnes in the first film, the late John Ingle from the second film and currently voiced by George Ball in The Land Before Time XIV: Journey of the Brave. He is Cera's father.
He is occasionally an antagonist or protagonist.
Personality[]
His personality is unknown in the first film, but he is shown to be ashamed of bigotry, or speciesism. He is seen growling at Littlefoot (whom he sees as a bad influence on Cera) and telling him "Threehorns never play with longnecks." He's often portrayed as snooty, hypocritical, and bigoted; the degree of his pride and perverse obstinacy is seen in The Land Before Time III: The Time of the Great Giving when he takes Cera straight into a wildfire rather than going with the other dinosaurs. He is shown to be very protective of his daughter, even to the point of calling Littlefoot a bad influence, which disappoints Littlefoot's grandfather and frightening Littlefoot's grandmother and Littlefoot's friends as well. He is mindful of his negative attitude, but in the first films at least, thinks nothing of it, saying that even if he is thought mean, he has a family to protect and he will do that by any means necessary. In a song from The Time of the Great Giving he says that he was inculcated with this attitude by his own father, who told him to "stand and fight, don't run away."
According to Tria, he was not always as furious as he currently is. Given how mellow he becomes in the embrace of his family, his fury and overall gruffness might stern from the pain of losing his whole family except Cera on his way to the Great Valley. While he is still as austere and lacking in understanding as ever, his racism and bad attitude have gradually lessened over time.
Topps also appears to be one of the most lion-hearted characters in the series. He is not afraid of Red Claw when they fight one another, and even when he is outnumbered against a few Belly Draggers, he takes them all out without receiving a single scratch. Topps also manages to get the drop on other Sharpteeth he goes up against despite the odds not being in his favor.
He has been shown to be part of the Great Valley's leadership, sharing power with Littlefoot's grandfather. Though Topps' and Littlefoot's family met early in the first film, it is assumed that he and Grandpa Longneck were formally introduced to each other after they were isolated from their kids and Littlefoot's mother's death in the great earthquake. This was shown in a flashback in The Stone of Cold Fire.
Despite all that, he shown to be very selfish and unhospitable to visitors in the Great Valley when it comes to food, like the way he treated the Spiketail Herd and Doc. He often gets told off for that.
And like many of the Great Valley inhabitants Daddy Topps has shown a complete dislike of sharpteeth. He was for the most part a jerk towards the only friendly sharptooth, Chomper. Chomper was often nervous around Daddy Topps, due to his grumpy personality. However by the events of The Land Before Time XIV: Journey of the Brave, Topps still had his doubts about trusting sharpteeth, especially when Grandpa Longneck allowed both Chomper and Ruby to help them find Littlefoot and his friends. All that changed when during their journey to Fire Mountain the five of them, including Wild Arms, encountered an unfriendly and vicious horned sharptooth that almost found them due to Wild Arm's panicking. Daddy Topps himself finally warmed up to Chomper, when Chomper told them that the vicious horned sharptooth was gone and even Daddy Topps himself finally cracked a grateful smile, proving that he now fully trusts Chomper. The two of them are now on even terms.
The Land Before Time[]
Daddy Topps was first introduce watching his daughter Cera and her siblings born with the former still covered on her egg accidentally bumping on her sibling much to his surprise, until she finally break from her egg. Sometime later after Cera grow up, he was playing with her until he sees a young longneck named Littlefoot attempts to play with her and immediately stops them with him growling at the latter believing he is a bad influence on triceratops and says that "Three horns never played with Longnecks.". Then he picks up Cera, while Littlefoot was pick up by his mother (who ignites her distrust on Daddy Topps due to his bad behavior and growling at her son).
During the big earthquake, Daddy Topps was separated from Cera and Littlefoot's mother has died from protecting her and Littlefoot from Sharptooth. Shortly after this, he meet Grandpa and Grandma Longneck who happened to be the parents of Littlefoot's mother and Littlefoot's grandparents and they continue their journey to The Great Valley without Cera, Littlefoot (who already also on the way too and meeting Petrie, Ducky and Spike) and Littlefoot's mother. After Sharptooth's demise, Daddy Topps was finally reunited with Cera.
The Land Before Time II: The Great Valley Adventure[]
Daddy Topps was first shown with Grandpa Longneck and Mama Swimmer watching Cera and her friends playing. After Cera and her friends fell into the tar pit, Daddy Topps was the first to hear them screaming for help, Grandpa Longneck rescues them and they all give them a stern look for their recklessness and disobedience. Sometime later two adult sharpteeth enter the Great Valley due to the Great wall in the Mysterious Beyond surrounded the valley damaged caused by 2 egg thieves named Ozzy and Strut, Daddy Topps was warned of the warning by Grandpa and Grandma Longneck, then they hear Ducky's scream and rush to help. They eventually drive them away. When the kids dishonestly say that they do not know how the sharpteeth came in the valley and Little nervously hesitant, Topsy firmly demands Cera (which was her idea to not tell the grownups anything in the first place) to tell the truth at once. Cera in defeat, reluctantly then explains to them that the Great Wall earned a big hole by an avalanche of rocks after they were chasing Ozzy and Strut into the mysterious beyond. Daddy Topps and the grownups decide to close the opening at once and Grandpa Longneck tells Littlefoot and the others to stay in the valley saying it's too dangerous. After the sharpteeth left the valley while chasing Ozzy and Strut who tried to kill Littlefoot and Chomper who prior to then turned to be the son of the sharptooth couple, went after them, they finally close the wall and after that he called out to Cera who were playing with her friends it's time to go home.
