Daffy Duck is one of the main protagonists of the Looney Tunes franchise. He is Bugs Bunny's best friend and occasional friendly rival as well as working partner (as seen in Looney Tunes: Back In Action). Despite this, their early history had them constantly and violently at odds with each other (though his was primarily one-sided on Daffy's part), and Daffy himself has an extensive history of villainous acts.
He was voiced by Mel Blanc from 1937 until his death in 1989. Since then, he has been voiced on-and-off by different actors, such as Joe Alaskey (1990–2014), Greg Burson (1993–1997), Jeff Bergman (1990–1993, 2011–2015), Dee Bradley Baker (1996, 2016–2020), Sam Vincent in Baby Looney Tunes, and Eric Bauza since 2018. In the Japanese dub, he is voiced by Wataru Takagi.
Personality
Daffy was originally an iconic animated screwball. However, ever since Chuck Jones took over the character, he was turned more into a jealous, arrogant duck who is Bugs Bunny's rival and occasional best friend. Daffy also craves the spotlight, which he rarely succeeds in attaining because of his best friend's overwhelming fame, and became so obsessed that he has tried many attempts to trick Bugs into looking bad and come out on top, but fails repeatedly. He also antagonized other protagonists such as Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and Speedy Gonzales for innately selfish reasons, which also makes him an anti-hero and occasionally a villain in the series due to how much of a nuisance he tends to be.
In earlier cartoons, he was usually undefeatable and tricksy to the point of being random, unpredictable and overall crazy (as his name implies), often laughing, hopping and dancing wherever he goes like a happy-go-lucky lunatic does, clearly being in his own little world. When he was originally much more of a classic "screwball" character, his insanity and recklessness usually cause trouble for others, but often unintentionally. When the company made Bugs Bunny, who became more popular than Daffy was, bit by bit, Daffy became much more incompetent, more foolish and prone to losing, and Chuck Jones slowly changed Daffy Duck into a saner, but still jealous and occasionally evil character. In the 1960s, this characterization evolved to the point that Daffy was often depicted as flat out evil, especially when competing against his rival Speedy Gonzales.
Daffy is usually underestimated by his enemies such as Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Nasty Canasta, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Tasmanian Devil, George P. Dog, Marvin the Martian, and Speedy Gonzales due to his greed and insanity. More often than not, Daffy's arrogance and self-obsession gets the better of him and he is easily defeated in the end, although even after becoming more of a bitter loser with a delusional streak, he has still occasionally salvaged some victories against all except Nasty Canasta and Bugs Bunny.
One of Daffy's more prominent traits later on is his greed and love of money (on top of being a complete troublemaker). For example, when he saw a mound of treasure when he and Bugs were traveling to Pismo Beach, he immediately wanted it all to himself, and when he heard about a $5,000 reward for the Tasmanian Devil's capture, he immediately went from being terrified of the creature to intent on capturing it to be the one to earn the reward.
Despite all his bad qualities, troublesome behavior and stints of outright villainy, he has also done plenty of heroic acts. For example, when he's Duck Dodgers, he's often trying to protect the Earth from Marvin the Martian and other threats, where he is treated as a cosmic protector who was resourceful enough to be a trickster towards Marvin by getting Porky disguised as a lady martian while Daffy looks for a energy core. He's also teamed up with Bugs to defeat other villains, and in movies like Space Jam, and especially Looney Tunes: Back in Action, he's an outright protagonist; in the former, he joined the other Looney Tunes in defeating the Monstars to avoid becoming their slaves, and in the latter, he played a huge part in saving everyone from being turned into monkeys by the Chairman.
As time went on, Daffy began to be less antagonistic like and started being a little more heroic, though he still remained wacky and destructive in the mischievous way. It appears that he seems to give up trying out-staged Bugs and felt like sharing their roles together even though his jealousy still exists within him. Regardless of his decision, Daffy starts to be more accepting of his life and choices and develop friendships with Bugs and the other Looney Tunes.

Trivia
- He shares several of the same voice actors as Bugs, Tweety, Sylvester and Marvin.
- Despite being the deuteragonist of the series, he was introduced and debuted before Bugs.
- Before officially becoming Bugs Bunny's best friend, Daffy was also an antagonist or even an outright villain at times, mostly because of Bugs taking over his popularity. However, this eventually subsided over the years.
- Although everyone adored Daffy, they didn’t always appreciate his personality as much as they enjoyed his wackiness and have him being less tyrannical and threatening (even though they found it amusing where it can put him). It was probably the reason why he hardly ever got the applause he deserved. From the New Looney Tunes and onwards, Daffy remains acting wacky and destructive, but acts less antagonistic, even though his jealously and greed still remain at times.
- He shares many similarities with Donald Duck, his Disney counterpart, as both are anti-heroes and are jealous of the mascots of their respective companies (Bugs and Mickey). They both want to become the top star, but their plans are always foiled. But unlike Donald, Daffy is not the brightest bulb and was more antagonistic at times.
- While appearing with all the Looney Tunes in Teen Titans Go episode special Warner Bros 100th Anniversary, Daffy played a major role along with the Teen Titans Go characters while the rest of the Looney Tunes play supporting roles.
- Daffy's catchphrase was also used by Dr. Dawson, when he and Basil are tied in a giant mouse trap by Professor Ratigan and by Nigel Uno to the Delightful Children Down The Lane for exposing his rear, making his team laughed at his misfortune.
